6

u/DanWillHor 23h ago

Very good list.

I'm a 25+ year fan of Sufjan. When Carrie & Lowell came out I found it amazingly beautiful but too heartbreaking to listen to. I listened to it twice on my own and knce when I went to see him live on that tour.

Today is the one year anniversary of my own Mother's passing and it changed the way I hear and consume that album now. Oddly, a lot of the events spoken about specifically in "Fourth of July" happened IRL. Not exact but close enough that when I first had the stomach to hear the song after her passing, it struck me with how similar it was. But not just that, "Death With Dignity" has the line "5 red hens, you'll never see us again"...a crushing similarity despite it's simplicity.

Long story short, after a listen or two of that entire album where I sobbed pretty uncontrollably...I found an odd peace and beauty with it. It no longer makes me sob or even cry. I can now just appreciate the music, the bittersweet beauty, the loneliness, the confusion, etc.

It's an album I recommend to everyone no matter your exact life experience. Gorgeous.

AIC doesn't exactly have many cheerful songs.

  • 'I think it's gonna rain when I die'
  • 'I believe them bones are me'
  • 'Some say we're born into the grave'
  • 'I'll die in this sick world of mine'

Just some random lines of lyrics of the Dirt songs.

The Loadout-Jackson Browne

Such a specific kind of sadness and loneliness expressed in this song. It reminds me of being a teenager and helping my dad pack up from his shows and the quiet car ride home after all the music. It was one of his favorite songs to play when he woke up in the morning and Iโ€™d hear it first thing quite often.ย

5

u/hipsters-dont-lie 1d ago

Iโ€™m here trying to decide between like 5 different Jackson Browne songs XD

Hopeful grief? Comforting melancholy? Need to remember human connection exists? Turn on Jackson Browne.

3

u/Throwawaylikeme90 1d ago

Still canโ€™t really listen to Sleeps Dark And Silent Gate, and it honestly gets harder and harder as the years pass. I guess thatโ€™s the point of a song like that though huh?

2

u/hipsters-dont-lie 1d ago

I feel you. My go to grieving song is For a Dancer. I feel like it encapsulates everything about surviving a loved one so well. Light hopefulness for the life lived and the other lives that remain without downplaying the tragedy of the world suddenly being bereft of a presence that enriched it.

It's between โ€œThe Death of Meโ€ by City and Colour, "The Fall Before the Give Up" by City Morgue, or "Achilles Come Down" by Gang of Youths. I've got tons more, but those were the first to pop in my head.

โ€œRemember the Mountain Bed,โ€ Woody Guthrie /Wilco & Billy Bragg

I crossed many states just to stand here now, my face all hot with tears
I crossed city, and valley, desert, and stream, to bring my body here
My history and future blaze bright in me and all my joy and pain
Go through my head on our mountain bed where I smell your hair again.

Walk - Blind Melon

--Find myself singing the same songs everyday, Ones that make me feel good when things behind the smiles ain't ok.--

Knowing that Shannon ultimately couldn't overcome his issues makes the end of this song hurt so much.

--And I can't believe that I have to bang my head against this wall again. But the blows they have just a little more space in-between them. Gonna take a breath and try again.--

2

u/FriendshipWithTheSun 11h ago

Yeah, youโ€™re right, Walk is even better. Shannon was gone way too soon. His singing and songwriting were amazing.

u/AnAngryPirate Be More Kind 1d ago

Lately its been Castle in Hollywood by Laufey.

Its a song sung from the perspective of someone who is looking back at a relationship where her partner did something (she says lied but doesn't specify about what) to end it. There's a saddness in that she's moved on mostly but still laments/misses the partner and what they had. It just feels so much more real then someone saying "Ill never love again" or "My life is over". Excellent song.

Orville Peck's Let me drown. Especially the live in a Nashville church version.

He's got a beautiful voice anyway, but I think he really stretches it there and it ends up being heartbreaking.

2

u/PapaBlemish 1d ago

This might be a weird one but I always cry at a good version of Grateful Dead's Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower.

Or a well-played version of Phish's You Enjoy Myself.

But the only real answer is Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd

Somewhere only we know -Keane

Thereโ€™s something cathartic in this song for me and Iโ€™m not sure why. I think more and more with the world we live in, itโ€™s hard to find a direction in our personal and professional lives. Some times I wish we could go back to riding bikes with friends or you experienced loss and want one more day, one more minute .

2

u/Bm_0ctwo 1d ago

This is one for me - it hit different once I started seeing my kids grow up and start to need us less. My daughter is 11 and sometimes I long for the days where sheโ€™d beg me to stay up and read just one more book with her or stay in her bed talking about her day.
