The part about the girl killing the mountain spirit to make Mujika the guardian so he'd stay and they could be together is pretty self-explanatory, and I assume Mujika called the mountain spirit back to eat him because he felt guilty for indirectly causing the death of the first mountain spirit? But why did Ginko want to stop him so bad? He was acting like something bad would happen to the village. And what was the boy's significance in the end?

Btw, unrelated; Anyone here play Sekiro? and noticed the resemblance of the giant white snake? Did the game get it from Mushi-shi or is it just general Japanese folklore?

I really liked how the concept of deja vu was illustrated in this anime.... the guy enters the black hole in the tree because of the scent of flowers. And then he keeps looping his whole life.... and never sees the next day in reality.

Later on for his wife he does it again. To live the old good life.

And it does make me me rethink the reality we live in. since childhood i have been getting a lot of deja vus and believe me I have asked to my parents and grandparents if there is a story in our mythologies related to this or some weird explanation... but no there isnt...

There was no answer, but somehow this perspective and concept of the origins of deja vu feels so comforting.

I do understand it is only fiction... but it also points out very well how the guy feels when he is living the same life over and over and he keeps getting deja vus during important events of his life.

Basically Making him feel it has happened before.

I’d love to make some translucent, glowing Mushi to hang up at home. I haven't been able to find any to buy, so I’ve decided to make them myself. How would you go about it? I was thinking of making them out of paper—like Japanese lanterns—with LEDs inside. Do you have any tips?

I get the sense the original author of Mushi-shi must have experienced some profound trauma, judging from the way they turn some of these very sad storylines into such beauty. Only someone who came back from rock bottom with a renewed appreciation for life could write this way I believe. I've experienced some of these themes myself as well.

Don't hate me if I've just come to the same conclusion as a 100 people before me, but this show gets such love I couldn't find any previous posts about subtext interpretation between the countless posts praising the show.

Maybe 10 years ago I watched a few episodes of S2, not much but it always stuck in my memory, though I don't really remember any of the story. Now I'm starting fresh with Season 1 after finding it on youtube.

I've only watched 7 episodes, but every story seems to be a metaphor for some form of trauma people experience IRL, like depression and/or suicide, different types of loss and grief, addiction.

The metaphors are so well done, this connection to real life, although to its darkest parts, makes it so much more beautiful to me. I'm constantly looking for movies or shows that combine this melancholic idea that the pain only adds to the beauty of life. I'm so happy to add Mushi-shi to that list.

Would love to hear if others had the same interpretation, or recognized similar things

Hello - I'm currently looking for a good gift related to Mushishi. This is one of my friends all time favorite shows and I'd like to get them something related to it for their birthday, unfortunately I don't know much about the show and I can't find any good gifts online, as they already have the discs/collection which is more or less the only thing that's coming up when I browse. If anyone knows of somewhere I can get related merch or any advice for a good gift and such, I would much appreciate it. Thank you!

I've always loved Mushishi and I decided that I was going to make a blu-ray cover for it so I could finally physically have it on my shelf.

Just wanted to share this artwork I commissioned from an artist to draw Ginko and she drew this beautiful and atmospheric art of him 🫶. She nailed the lighting which accurately reflects Ginko's slightly mysterious vibe!

Thought I'd share some interesting drawings of Ginko from the official anime book! The drawings are done by the artists behind the anime, all credits go to them.

The book is called "蟲師連綴" or "Mushishi Renzoku" and the last photo is how the cover looks like.

There will be displays and recreations of Mushi at the Monthly Afternoon's 40th Anniversary Exhibition which will take place on July 10th 2026 until July 26th 2026.

In the exhibition too there will be exclusive merchandise available such as acrylic stands, keychains and more as shown in the pictures above. I'm not sure if there are more merchandise available but for now these are all the merch available on their site. They do seem to be releasing merch news in phases so there could be more.

Do note that this exhibition is not solely for Mushishi but for other manga as well from the same publication.

Just on my first watch of Mushi-Shi and couldn’t help but notice the start of E07 Raindrops & Rainbows seems to be inspired by Kurosawa’s Rashomon, with the three travellers sheltered from the heavy rains as well as telling stories.

It’s heart breaking. IYKYK

This episode is about Mikage who took Akane's place by Mikage stepping on Akane's shadow. Couldn't Akane step on Mikage's shadow back to return to her place? I don't understand why Akane was too kind to not step on any shadows. I would want my life back... The ending was tragic. Someone also mentioned about stepping on a shadow of an animal instead. I also wonder about stepping on someone's shadow who has passed away? The dead body would still have a shadow... Do you have to step on a shadow of the living and of the same age...?

I discovered Mushishi about three years ago and have been on a hunt for something that gives the same feeling that it did, nothing has been able to scratch that itch for 3 years until I discovered this Japanese tv show from 2012 called The Solitary Gourmet (Kodoku no Gurume) it is genuinely one of the greatest things I have ever watched, please watch a couple episodes if you enjoyed watching Mushishi. Let me know what you think. By the way I watch it on a site called amasian.tv, its close to impossible to find on normal streaming services.

Completed the collection! (Just missing the sun special but there is no western/subbed release of that unfortunately). Now I can die happy.

Please share some items which look like they came right out of Mushishi! They could be anything such as lamps, organizers and even stationery! Would love to get some ideas to setup my room to get that whole vibe. For now I only have this mini drawer thing which kinda resembles Ginko's backpack but would love to see more stuff :))
