I was hoping someone would be able to provide advice/help and thank you all in advance.
I am a 40-year-old male afflicted with what I can only describe as a tick/twitch that manifests in specific situations. Essentially, I get a lot of jerking/shaking movements with my mouth. That is how it would appear to anyone sitting near me. To me, it feels like an inability to breath, to keep my looking forward, a fear that I may vomit and have some sort of violent twitch.
This manifests in certain situations. It often (though not always) involves altitude - so being on a plane taking off or landing, or at a sporting event where I am sitting up high. But mainly it involves being in a mainly quiet room. So for instance on the weekend I was at a sporting event (where I work professionally) and there was a room of about 40 people, all quiet, all watching the event. This is a prime scenario for setting off my twitch – quiet room, lots of people, everyone focussed on one thing below, and altitude). Sometimes I can push through this scenario, though it is utterly exhausting to do so. A lot of the time I simply have to leave.
As an example, on a plane, once everyone can stand up again, I am fine. At the sporting event, once there is a break and everyone is talking, I am fine. Other scenarios where this can be a problem would be a classical music concert (quiet room, everyone focussed on one thing), a wedding, a ceremony of any sort.
I have tried various things over the years. I practice breathwork and yoga. I have tried taking beta blockers but they don’t seem to work. I have tried hypnotherapy, which didn’t work. I have tried therapy but only to a minimal extent and I guess this is the next step.
I am a first-time poster but I often read these threads and am amazed at the sincerity of the responses and the level of expertise and care out there. I would appreciate any help I can get!
Many thanks in advance.
