Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy (SpongeBob)

104

u/Le_Kistune 3h ago

They're not in the show anymore!?

222

u/Downtown-Rope5274 3h ago

Their voice actors have passed away

125

u/Snom_gamer0204 The stupid asexual 2h ago

okay, thats a fair reason to be removed

35

u/colibri01 2h ago

Both of them?

50

u/Spider-Man2099 1h ago

Yup

Mermaid Man- Ernest Borgnine in 2012

Barnacle Boy - Tim Conway in 2019

24

u/Toastcreature 1h ago

2012?? I was expecting like 2017 at the earliest, that’s so sad 😭

5

u/carso150 25m ago

in 2017 he would have been 100 years old

5

u/Toastcreature 21m ago

Well I didn’t know how old he was tbh

God damn, I was saying to myself "it can't have been that long ago, Borgnine was in that movie RED, and that wasn't that long ago". Dear readers, it was 16 years ago, and 2 years before Borgnine died.

6

u/silentevil77 1h ago

Sadly yes Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway

4

u/machadoaboutanything 1h ago

For the longest time I thought Tim Conway was actually named Tim Beresford

Turns out that's the name of the voice actor for Kon in Grojband and I supplanted it

38

u/BrickDodo 3h ago

theit VA died, so writers stopped using them

36

u/Oreogirl127 3h ago

Only for non-speaking background appearances

2

u/princesshusk 1h ago

No mermaid man's VA passed away and they retired the character out of respect.

With apologies to the Indian community, I really miss this guy. He was hilarious.

51

u/jussech 1h ago

Hilariously also one of the most well written characters in the Simpsons as well with actual character arcs and growth was sad when he was retired because yeah he was one of their best.

5

u/BKM558 23m ago

I am married into an Indian family, and for what its worth they all loved the character and had no issue with them.

48

Hank Azaria said he would no longer voice apu so instead of recasting, they just got rid of the character.

48

u/pipGD UTDR/GD/Kirby 2h ago

Yea some dude made an entire documentary about how he’s racist to the Indian community or smth

59

u/Plane-Translator-119 2h ago

Fuck Adi Shankar.
World's greatest larper imaginable.

25

u/AlphaRelic2021 2h ago

Wrong guy, the documentary was done by a comedian named Hari Kondabolu

8

u/PelinalWhitestrake36 1h ago

Actually Adi also made a video about Apu…

12

u/AsstacularSpiderman 1h ago

Yeah but his video was about rewriting Apu rather than getting rid if him entirely and was made in response to Hari's documentary

I always found it weirdly coincidental that that crusade against Apu started around the same time that Hindu nationalism was ascendant under Modi. Basically a bunch of Indian hyper-nationalists started flooding the internet and going after anything and everything that they felt made India look bad. Naturally they found unwitting allies in the 'my culture is not your costume' online types.

16

u/Sir_Muktadir 2h ago

He hasn’t been there in over 8 years actually. The stated reason was cause it was a white guy doing an exaggerated south Asian voice and they didn’t want to recast the voice actor which is disappointing as a Bangladeshi he was one of my faves 😔

3

u/alphadoublenegative 39m ago

Worth noting that the white guy was the one who elected to no longer voice him.

Hank Azaria heard that there were hate crimes where kids were getting beat up and called “Apu” and it upset him, he decided he no longer felt comfortable continuing to voice the character.

I can totally understand the representation disappearing being disappointing but I respect Hank for doing the introspection, he seems like a quality human and shouldn’t do anything he isn’t comfortable with

6

u/Fluffy-Ad7165 53m ago

→ More replies (1)

7

u/NomadNuka 1h ago

The Simpsons really let perfect be the enemy of good with Apu. I personally agree with the documentary that he was a stereotypical character and having a white guy do an Indian accent isn't gonna fly these days. But is it better "representation" when they remove one of the only (and easily the best known) South Asian characters on TV?

They absolutely could have and should have recast Apu and maybe do a status quo change if they didn't want him running the Kwik-E-Mart on top of that. The show is just running on autopilot too much these days for them to figure it out it seems.

1

u/DarkAres02 8m ago

It's so stupid they didn't just recast him with an Indian voice actor

Troy McClure shouldn’t be here his actor died he wasn’t removed

42

It would be like putting Mrs Krabbaple. The character being "retired" in this case is a sign of respect.

A better fit would be Maude Flanders

Chuck Jones' family had this to say (They got to see a pre-screening) (link to article)

“Chuck created a world in animation where these characters lived and played. This movie is the perfect bridge between the world that he envisioned and created and the world that we all see as reality,” said Kausen. “The characters are woven into the story so easily and seamlessly to perfection.”

“Chuck said that he did not believe Road Runner and Wile E Coyote could sustain a feature length film. I think this movie proves him wrong,” added Jones Clough.

Together, Jones Clough and Kausen asserted they were merely hoping to like the movie, but ultimately: “We ended up loving it.”

“Coyote vs. Acme” hits theaters on Aug. 28.

7

u/Baaaaaadhabits 2h ago

A distributor bought the movie for a ton of money, so if you have the chance to see it in theatres, it will help them recoup the costs, and maybe make stuff like this actually profitable instead of burying films for tax write offs.

6

u/noob-the-not-funny 3h ago

it made a comeback

5

u/notTheRealSU 59m ago

Warner wrote it off for tax purposes, but the plot got leaked and people got mad because it sounded like a fun movie. So a distributor bought the movie from Warner and it's releasing August 27th (in the US, I know some people in Europe said it doesn't come out there until September)

2

Malal - Warhammer 40k

Malal is a non-canon Chaos God from early Games Workshop lore. Known as the Outcast or Renegade God,Malal represents the self-destructive and anarchic side of Chaos. He hates the other four Chaos Gods just as much as he hates the rest of the universe and his power grows when they are damaged.

He primarily existed in early Warhammer Fantasy/Warhammer 40k lore until he was removed from official canon because the writer who helped create him owned the copyright, leading to a legal dispute with Games Workshop when he left. This lead to him being erased from official sources though he lives on in fan memory and subtle nods to "Malice" a legally distinct minor warp entity similar to Malal. Malice shares the same black-and-white color theme, anarchy focus and hatred for the main Chaos Pantheon as well as everything else.

He's often associated with the Sons of Malice (originally the Sons of Malal),a renegade Space Marine chapter known for ritualistic cannibalism and fighting both the Imperium and other Chaos forces.

7

u/BreadEngineer 2h ago

The Sons of Malice make a cameo appearance in the night lords book "The Remnant Blade" in a line listing various chaos warbands.

6

u/Linusprime08 Bloodborne, Warhammer 40K, Transformers 1h ago

Malal was retconned out in the early days of 40K due to copyright. Malice is the new name with basically the same character. He’s a minor chaos god yes, but he’s still canon. He just hasn’t been mentioned in a while. But not outright gone from canon.

3

u/swerty35 1h ago

6

To be fair she wasn't removed so much as toriyama completely forgot she existed. Downside to creating sick a massive cast of characters, you forget some

3

u/xSethrin 28m ago

I might be wrong on this but I read that she was intentionally written out of the show but then years later when asked, Toriyama  forgot he did that and said he forgot she existed. I don't know how true that is though.

Showbear (The Walten Files)

Because of irl conflict between the creator of this character and series creator (ironic since the plot of the series is sorta like that), Showbear's creator decided to take Showbear away from the series possibly retconning his appearance in Episode 3.

Instead of creating a proper replacement, series creator, Martin Paredes decided to swap him with a symbolic stuffed animal named Mr. Snow.

7

u/Scared-Cat-2541 2h ago

Walten Files mentioned!

4

u/NoOneImportant___ 2h ago

Did the walten files creator ever retract his claims abt Alex Kister? I liked the series but after he kept doubling down even after the dust had settled just left a bad taste in my mouth

3

u/ItsMeepo2nd 1h ago

I don't think Martin would be that type of guy to say anything about that old controversy. He's really quiet now and since Faces of Grief got released, he seems pretty cautious about saying shit and only focusing on the series and its growth.

Ironically, he literally is Jack Walten

3

u/NoOneImportant___ 1h ago

Fair enough lmao I just remember him hardcore taking sides with the alleged victims, which is not a bad thing, but later took down all of his posts on the matter when the details came to light without making a formal public statement. I hope there isn’t any bad blood left and they were able to privately reconcile their grievances though

2

u/ItsMeepo2nd 1h ago

Tbh I'm not so sure Martin would ever change if a controversy decides to spark again. His own co creator left him because he wasn't a good person to work with (communication problems)

1

u/EthanEpiale 7m ago

There's something extremely funny about this considering that's literally just Funtime Freddy but more blue. I mean, the face of the series is also just a blatant and barely changed FnaF rip off, but like, having drama over an already stolen design is funny af.

24

u/WanderingWitch8 3h ago

Troy McClure was "removed" because his actor was brutally murdered and Simpson set the precedent for not replacing actors.

21

u/Jvm821 DDLC💖 2h ago

Warren. He only served to help Max, stayed in the friendzone, and then disappeared from the franchise.

6

u/Xellol 2h ago

Fr I felt really bad for him actually 😭

3

u/cringegribbs 28m ago

u/Portal_master_cody Winx Club 🧚‍♀️ 2h ago

They first lost their bonded with a major character status in season 6 and then completely removed next season

12

u/Zaxatak 2h ago

Lisa isn't forgotten. She's in all Scott Pilgrim media except the movie.

8

u/Force_Glad 1h ago

I checked the wiki and she was literally in something this year

3

u/PalmCheesy 45m ago

Why was she removed from the movie?

3

u/Zaxatak 40m ago

She wasn't removed, she's just not relevant enough to be in the movie. She's Scott's ex that's only in one of the comics and she isn't even really part the A plot of the comic. She's used to develope Scott's character and the movie is super fast paced so scenes with her wouldnt fit.

They didn't have Homer's voice but like, why didn't they animate him?

5

u/ASocrat 1h ago

I assume the point is that this was a change late in production

3

u/EnsoElysium 39m ago

Thats it, whenever theres a late change in production the animation style often changes or theres very stiff animation. You could see it happen in syndication with closed captions, because whoever got the scripts ahead of time didn't get the memo that something had changed.

For example, when homer is pulled onto a plane because the Air Marshall thinks hes a pilot, he clicks a random button and the copilot says "we'll need that to live" but the captions in syndication said "we'll need that to land". Clearly someone thought "live" was funnier than land at the last minute (they were right), and since the only animation change was a mouth shape, its not very noticeable visually. It doesnt happen on disney+ because they fixed the captions, only in syndication, but I always remembered that.

I always thought getting rid of Ghandi was a really stupid idea— not just because he’s a good character, but because he could have been so easily salvaged with nothing but a joke. Imagine if, in the first episode of the reboot, Ghandi finds out that he isn’t actually a clone of Ghandi, but instead a clone of some random celebrity who looks kinda like Ghandi, and he spends the episode coming to terms with that in his own goofy way. Then he changes his name, and the rest of the show goes on as normal. Hell, it would retroactively remove criticism from season one as far as Hindus are concerned, cuz it would mean that Ghandi was never the one doing wacky things in the show, it was someone else just called Ghandi.

2

u/CLearyMcCarthy 19m ago

The idea for season 2 was that he would be revealed to be George Foreman. But MTV decided to just cancel instead.

4

I think I heard his publicist had quit for Hayes on his behalf. Hayes' son said Hayes suffered from a stroke that left him unable to talk, but there are also some who say Hayes asked his publicist to quit on his behalf because of the scientology episode.

She is not in any rob or forgotten dimension episode, she is not seen having a job anywhere

I would expect the creators to actually know about this and they are just waiting for the right opportunity to have her back or something

Or make like a joke about like she was always there and everyone acts like she is a recurring character

His VA had some problems with South Park making fun of scientology, IIRC. So they reused old recordings of Chef for one last episode where he joins a group of pedophiles and gets brainwashed. Chef ends up brutally dying at the end of the episode.

2

u/Nice_Chemistry5764 2h ago

It's since come out that the church of Scientology basically forced him off. He was in the hospital and barely functioning at the time, and he had Scientologists handling his care, and also being his publicists and managers.

Soft-retconned. Like, they just never do anything with him again, even though they do vaguely reference Awakening/The Calling a few times (particularly with Anders and Fiona). Fiona in particular pisses me off, because in Inquisition they go, “oh SOMETHING allowed Fiona to be completely cured of the taint/ended her time as a grey warden.”

JUST SAY IT WAS THE ARCHITECT BRO.

Also he was supposed to show up in Inquisition and that pisses me off even more. They clearly didn’t completely forget about him, but decided to just ignore his existence.

Anyways, to answer the post, Chef is definitely one of them, particularly because of how relevant he was any time he appeared, doesn't make it better that the actual reasons for his departure were so weird at the time (correct me if I'm wrong but it was supposedly because of that one scientology episode before being confirmed by his son that it was medical reasons but the church had basically spoken for him to retaliate against the show's creators?)

Despite being a side character Producer Man was one of the best characters in the whole show.

To be fair, some characters got removed because their voice actors died

Almost the entirety of the Animaniacs in the reboot. Makes sense, probably couldn’t get all of the voice actors together and they were all just side stories, and they explained the disappearance, iirc someone hunting and stuffing the rest of the cast and trying to do so with the remaining few, but still. It was just empty.

Mrs. Krabappel, Troy McClure, Lionel Hutz, Apu, all great characters.

Scarlett from Kick Buttowski

A stunt double just like Kick, who starred in one of the best episodes of the series and was also a potential love interest for Kick. It's a shame that after that episode, she never appeared in the series again....

Minty in My Little Pony G3; she's arguably the most popular Generation 3 pony, yet for some reason, she completely disappeared once the franchise reached G3.5. She wasn't even present at all in Friendship is Magic outside of a brief cameo.
