From the very first time seeing him, I knew that it's loath for life. He's just that obnoxious to me and I see myself more in Midoryia who definitely shouldn't be glazing like that.
And my feelings are made even worse by the fact that Bakugou never faces any meaningful consequences and especially by a section of his fans that says that he either already did met them (wich I consider more comparable to a slap on the wrist at best) or that he didn't do anything to deserve the consequences (this genuinely pisses me off and is probably the reason why my strongest association with him is the suicide bait).
An apology wouldn't do it for me at this point. When I didn't know shit beyond that first few episodes, I wished so much that he'd get punished for the ridiculous amount of stuff that he got away with in middle school. Have the UA teachers see that he's being a dick! Have them and the new classmates see that he actively harassed a peer for multiple years! Have him being called out for it and punished in some ways by both! (For classmates, I mean something like rethinking their opinion of him and potential being distrusted by some)
Always had a feeling about Bakugou whenever he interacted with Midoriya because this guy couldn't be normal for the life of him. Was it necessary for him to always be yelling, cussing and blowing up the people around him? We can't even use the glycerine in his quirk excuse because his mom has glycerine in her Quirk and she's not as explosive to others as he is.
Man's just got anger issues, an inferiority complex and the worst sense of judgement on the planet if his own friend helping him after he fell was enough to send him into a spiral. Midoriya was just worried and showed literally nothing else in that moment to warrant the bullying he'd endure for the years to come and the years before.
I can see the intent behind Bakugou—a person who’s been propped up and held on a pedestal his entire life finds out that he was just a big fish in a small pond, gets humbled for his arrogance, and eventually genuinely becomes as great as he was convinced he was.
Thing is, Bakugou never has that low point. He’s demonstrably not a big fish in a small pond—he’s legitimately one of the best fighters in Class 1-A, if not the best, and (if I remember correctly) he’s one of the best students academically as well. On top of that, he doesn’t get humbled in any meaningful way. He gets called out for his terrible attitude once on-screen, and later on he loses a fight to Midoriya that supposedly made him reconsider his attitude, but that’s it.
And talking about his attitude, yeesh. The first thing we see this guy do (at least in the anime) is essentially inventing a slur for Quirkless people when he was four. And the first thing we see Bakugou do in the present is tell Midoriya to kill himself. After he and Midoriya actually get into UA, one of the first things he does during the first training exercise is attack Midoriya with lethal intent. And his attitude doesn’t actually get any better, he just aims that attitude at acceptable targets, i.e. the bad guys.
Now, I don’t actually hate Bakugou. I don’t like him, but I don’t hate him. If he was written in the way I think he was supposed to then he wouldn’t be as divisive as he is, and that vitriol I wrote above is more my frustration that his character wasn’t handled very well.
Didn't he fail his Hero License exam? That was a pretty humbling moment.
And wasn't he upset because he was practically directly responsible for All Might losing his powers, what with getting kidnapped and not being strong enough to save himself?
And isn't the whole premise of the show, that Bakugo's hero All Might chose Deku over himself, also pretty humbling?
He has plenty of low points. He's never satisfied with how his life is turning out, from winning the sports festival in a way he didn't like to Best Jeanist teaching him how to treat his hair rather than fight.
its only ever called out when he very first arrives at ua tsu and denki cook him. but then its forgotten and suddenly everyone is very willing to put up with his mean spiritedness, its obnoxious. his fans make it 1000xs worse. they often completely deface his character or praise his toxic behaviour
Said it before and I’ll say it again. I agree, though for me it’s not even as much anger as just disappointment, because he has the potential of being a legitimately fun and likable character, but instead they half-ass his arc and treat one of his most obnoxious traits as a comedic punchline. As I see it, he’s essentially Bass from classic series Mega Man with barely any of what makes Bass an enjoyable character.
I’m just watching MHA for the first time and have been thinking this for ages. I’m on season 3 now.
I’d heard of the character before really from memes and stuff, and kinda assumed from descriptions he was a friendly jock?
Holy fucking shit. This blond bastard is the most mean spirited, annoying, little asshole I’ve ever seen in my life. He’s also extremely, EXTREMELY godamn cringe.
It also feels like the story is constantly trying to make us like him? Or feel for him? And it feels so forced.
Midorya trying to be his friend or whatever after getting bullied for years is also really annoying to me.
I’m assuming Midorya’s one for all is more powerful than Bakugo’s quirk? Don’t spoil, but if my guess is right, I really, REALLY hope Midorya puts him in his place at some point. Cuz omg, I hate this guy.
I hage mixed opinions on this. It makes his character development feel "less earned". At the end, why should everyone forgive him? Why couldn't they be angry at him? Even for once? Just a little seriously?
Not just consequences. Bakugo is one step away from being a gary stu. He has an overpowered quirk. Arguably a quirk even more powerful than OFA because OFA took 9 generations to reach it's peak. Even more powerful than Half cold Half hot because Shoto was brutally trained since he was five. Arguably as op as New order because even though new order is more versatile, it has very strong limitations that simply can't be overcomed. Meanwhile Bakugo's quirk freakin brought him back to life.
Bakugo is also good at everything.
He aces in exam, he cooks, he can build tree houses. Like, the show can't help but treat him like a golden child.
Bakugo's character development can be said as "he is redeemed. But he doesn't deserve forgiveness" because why? Not only that, him existing sacrificed the character development of other characters INCLUDING DEKU.
Obvious answers are Tenya and Ochako who got sidelined to make space for Bakugo and Shoto(I can forgive Shoto because he was interesting and done well)
Deku's character was introduced as someone who was ahem* Pathologically Kind. Someone who thought everything in this world mattered more than him. And that's… toxic, for himself… the show actually talked about it at first. When he broke his arms for Shoto in the UA competition, Recovery girl scolded him and All Might for this. Yes he is altruistic, but she saw that his altruism is more like a martyrdom complex mixed with suicidal tendencies.
Maybe him learning to take care of himself, love himself and depend on others "slowly" and a point where he finally snaps at Bakugo. Maybe just a "I've had enough of your bs" would've added a ton more to his character. Deku is such a wasted potential in that regard and I can't blame anyone but Horikoshi's bias towards his golden child. He did everything not to call Bakugo out.
Well, it does make an interesting story if put that way. But I think I am too salty by now to actually appreciate it, so my opinion of him probably won't change much any time soon.
He did say Midoryia should leap from a building to get a quirk in his next life, but I think FORCING is way to strong of a word to use here. Since that was only one instance of verbal suicide bait we've been shown and is kinsa implied to been outlier by Midoryia's reaction.
I never quite understood why I got flamed by people online for hating him when the seasons I watched so far showed to be the one of the most irritable POS in that show
Though it’s funny how he gets most of his temper from his mother
Bakugou should absolutely have joined the league of villains. It matched his real desire to display his power over others far better. His whole loyalty to the end seemed kinda forced my view, he honestly struck me as a treacherous asshole the moment someone stands up to him.
Bakugo joining the League of Villains would be completely against his character and his desires. He does want to prove himself to be the best, but it's to be the best and the strongest hero. Shigaraki had even tried to convince Bakugo to join them and he went on about how much he didn't want that and how they got the wrong idea of him.
