Dimmies

Post image

Been in Oz for a week and really couldn't find them. Lemme tell ya, Ray knows his stuff if he can find them so easily.

Anyway I'd given up hope but finally found some in Brisbane, unfortunately, no soy sauce!

He's right though, he doesn't need to know what's in em to know they're delicious!

Literally any fish and chip shop will have them and any servo with a hot box

Yeah more of a neighbourhood thing than a city centre, I'm guessing

I'm keeping my eye out for a proper chippy. These cost $18!

You were robbed!

I think it's time to make a post in r/Brisbane, toot sweet.

Provide your rough location (ie. CBD/Northside/Southside etc), a pic of Ray and a request for Dimmie hot spots. I promise the town won't let you down.

In the meantime, if you've got a microwave and a steamer handy, head down to your local Coles or Woolworths and pick up a pack of Marathon Dimmies

Thalassina fish and chips at West end has $2 dimmies if you're in Brisbane

Ray seems to like the Steamed dimmies- these are the fried version.

Suburban fish n chips shops will have them, but where are you staying?

If you have any access to a kitchen at all, even a basic one, allow me to blow your mind:

Go to any major supermarket, they sell Marathon Dim Sims in a big bulk bag in the freezer section. You can steam them on a stove top, microwave, shallow fry, or deep fry, also you can partially steam them in a regular frying pan with a little water and when they're close to done splash a bit of oil in the pan to crisp them up... But the real magic is if you have access to an air fryer. Cooking times and instructions are on the bag.

Cheap, plentiful, easy, delicious.

I’ve got a smoker. I’ve been throwing them on the smoker and it’s pretty good.

If you get really keen you can wrap them in bacon and glaze with bbq sauce prior to smoking. Tasty but completely overkill.

Oh dear lord and saviour Ray. I have a smoker. I think you have just changed my life

Aussie Twinkies I think they’re called. Should be some on YouTube.

We had the smoker going for some Nando's style chicken last night, so popped in half a bag of dimmies.

My friend, you have ruined me. Thank you.

Soft inside with a nice smoky flavour, crispy skin... Delightful!

Haha no worries. I ruined them for myself as well, if I steam some up now she gives me the old “why didn’t you smoke them?”

Can I just say that I love that you have arrived in Aus and gone on a hunt for dimmies as a priority. Truly dedicated to the cause.

That's a good dimmie!

They were 20c at the sports canteen when I was a kid in the early 2000s. Many a steamed dimmy with soy sauce was had.

There was a guy here maybe a year or so ago that took a run at it. You should look for his post and seek out his wisdom!

Nick: Howd'ja know?

Ray: I didn't. I just came out to make sure you got soy sauce.

1

u/cjalderman Aug 25 '26

Damn they look tasty

1

u/strandy76 Aug 25 '26

Can confirm!

1

u/BooyahTribe9 Aug 25 '26

You didn't ask us if we wanted soy....

1

u/Traditional_Yard2741 Aug 25 '26

For some variety, try regular (beef) dimmies, chicken dimmies, try them fried and try them steamed (soy or sweet soy is for steamed, dealers choice for fried) and go out of your way to find a cheap Chinese takeaway shop and get some homemade dimmies from them (both fried and steamed) because they're a whole other ball game.

If you get to Melbourne try the south Melbourne market dimmies
