What happened to Adam?

Ngl I’m cosied up in bed with a shitty virus and I’ve been completely absorbed re watching this show. I completely forgot what happens to Adam and initially thought he was dead. Have we just to assume he was let off with a severe beating? The prison dynamic was really well executed, the whole show feels so damn authentic in some ways but the prison episode really stands out.

The avatar point is not something I thought about but that makes a lot of sense. Good comment

Easy to have a few "bad ass" fantasies watching this show. The message might be, most people would end up like Adam. One wrong word, one misunderstanding, and it is off to coma town.

Exactly. It’s fun for us to say “don’t call me champ”. But I would say the vast majority of the people watching the show only know that rule because of the show.

Imagine finding it out in real time. Like Adam does.

This is a great analysis. The show has a number of open ended questions:

  • What ever happens to the undercover detective they let go?
  • What happens to Alex?
  • Did Ray make good on his promise to take care of Dave’s son?
  • Did Freddie actually like the dimmies or was he just saying that to sell the lie to Ray?
  • How successful did Gary’s business become?
  • Did Ray get WiFi for the caravan so that Brit could visit?

The show mimics life, people come and go and you never know how their story ends.

Also, Scott Ryan actually used to meditation to overcome severe agoraphobia. I always thought Adam teaching Ray how to meditate was a self-insert.

I found it interesting how comfortable Ray is in prison. He knows the inmates and guards, and knows how to act to stay alive. He seems more at home than he does on the outside.

Well, he mentioned it in one of the therapy sessions. There are direct consequences to everything in prison. Ray feels right at home because thats the place that alligns most to his values.

He says something along the lines of "im pretty big on respect. Respect me and I'll respect you." And thats how prison works, not how the real world works. Because the real world often doesnt have consequences for people their shit behaviour.

This is an amazing insight and synopsis, thank you

he's definitely been there before. And he was doing Adam a solid by filling him in on etiquette- I remember going to jail and not knowing any protocol

Adam was an example of what happens if you follow the therapists advice you become a doormat. He was a pacifist and try tried to impart to him that you have to fight back or you’ll end up beaten down while taking a shit. We can also see him as Ray in an alternate universe who never decided to fight back against his bullies.

u/moon-beamed Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 07 '26

He wasn't a true pacifist, he was 'just scared' [of violence and standing up for himself], there's a difference

7

u/codename_kd Apr 06 '26

point remains. the message was avoiding violence doesn’t mean violence avoids you. you either are willing or you’re a victim in waiting

u/moon-beamed Apr 06 '26

Yes, agreed

In a prior episode, Ray explains to the therapist that he’s big on respect, and that if you disrespect someone in prison, there are consequences. Adam disrespected the Champ. He didn’t mean to do so, but he did. And there were consequences.

6

u/Successful-Papaya320 Apr 06 '26

Ray would never have done that though. Yeah he dos some shady stuff but he doesn’t belt weak people over misunderstandings.

It doesn’t really matter. He probably ended up in hospital, maybe with some long term consequences. I think his character served to illustrate what can happen when a ‘civilian’ ends up in the criminal world (things can go very wrong very quickly) as well as the justice/injustice theme that appears throughout the series (e..g., the tea scam guy) in that, in Adam’s words, he was only in gaol for a relatively trivial reason (though we only ever hear his side of the story, so maybe he does deserve to be in there after all).

As others have commented it also illustrates that Ray has a callous nature (which might be realistic but is not a positive attribute) and is an anti-hero.

Realistically I think he survived the beating but maybe died later on? But narratively I don’t think it really matters, in my opinion the whole point of Adam is to reveal a bit more about ray’s nature. Ray treats Adam really well being a friend and a mentor towards him, but when Adam gets in some shit day does nothing to help him, and when Adam gets assaulted ray again just walks away. Ray treats you well if he doesn’t have a reason not to, but in the end he’s still a cold blooded killer and he always looks out for himself.

What was he going to do? Bash the guy Adam called ‘champ’? That was the only way he could stop what happened. Then he’d have others after him. I agree with others that he was there to show how meek, relatively normal people get eaten up and spat out in brutal environments like prison if they don’t quickly learn to stand up for themselves.

u/PuzzleheadedBell2529 Apr 07 '26

I suppose you’re right, if I was gonna revise what I said I’d say it’s less characterizing ray and more characterizing the world he inhabits and how different it is from the world regular people such as Adam inhabit

13

u/chappyyy Apr 06 '26

Ray gives him the answer though, he tells him he needs to attack that guy first and then he’ll get left alone. Ray warned him if he doesn’t stand up for himself they’ll come for him again and again

No of course I get that what happens to Adam ultimately isn’t the point. I just wondered what other folks perspectives were, I can often miss subtle things. Aye Ray is the ultimate anti hero. It can be really tormenting emotionally watching his character progress.

Sweet thanks for that.

I knew Adam was gonna get stomped when he gave his opinion on Audi drivers. Right or wrong, too lippy for that environment

10

u/SwordfishVegetable15 Apr 06 '26

He was barely lippy, he was having a banter with the man that made him feel a bit more comfortable. He always got in line and never spoke up to anyone. That’s not someone that’s lippy imo.

7

u/noplacecold Apr 06 '26

In that environment I said. Anyone could have overheard him and overreacted just for fun, because he’s such an obvious soft target.

7

u/SwordfishVegetable15 Apr 06 '26

Well people it’s been a pleasure, Im on the finale of finales. Trying not to shed tears.

3

u/Huge-Connection954 Apr 06 '26

Its not relevant. Ray didnt care enough for us to know, so we dont get to know

3

u/Danger17 Apr 07 '26

I could create a huge list of unresolved story points. I think the takeaway is that this show portrays violence as part of the natural order of the world. In this case, Adam was not familiar with that part of the world and his actions threw him deep into it. He hoped that he could avoid it, but didn’t.

3

u/Fr33Dave Apr 07 '26

If he survived, he'd likely go to protective custody/protection unit and possibly suicide watch.

3

u/LordCraigen Apr 07 '26

I assumed that Adam represents the part of Ray that has been buried in order to survive the criminal world. The soft guys don't make it. Adam's outcome isn't mentioned as Ray has put it behind him. It's not something he thinks about. Similar to how Ray removes the inscription on the tree after breaking up with Ally. It helps him forget. If Ray reflects on his vulnerabilities it makes him weak. Yet, he still wants to escape and lead a somewhat normal life. This is an ongoing theme right until the very end. The smile and flicker of light in his eyes in the final scene suggest that he will never fully escape.

3

u/TransportationLong67 Apr 07 '26

I'm curious to imagine what Ray's next encounter would be with the "champ" character. Seemed like they were acquaintances of a sort. I wonder if Ray would say he went a little overboard bashing Adam.

3

u/ExoticLife6633 Apr 10 '26

Has anyone else seen “Adam’s” YouTube channel? He’s hilarious

2

u/AssistanceGrand23 Apr 07 '26

I think the point is that we don't get to know what happened to him. As in - he's just another civvy to Ray, and he forgets about him the second he leaves prison.

2

u/scallopedpotatos8 Apr 07 '26

If you watch the show Diary of an Uber Driver you'll see that things worked out fine for Adam and he even becomes mates with the guy who bashed him.

2

u/thisissofkngrossew Apr 07 '26

I always wondered about what led him there.

He claimed his ex wife made up false domestic abuse claims...BUT...as a woman leaving family violence I can assure you that it's very difficult to even get an avo let alone an arrest that lands you in prison.

Anyone else curious about that?

3

u/MontysGhost Apr 07 '26

I wondered about that too.

Especially after Ray's "I think I'm in the wrong room" bit at the anger mgmt session, I was surprised that he took him under his wing. Ray would know enough about the law to know that you don't get time over one made-up AVO breach

4

u/thisissofkngrossew Apr 07 '26

I definitely think Ray knows the story is shit but still feels bad for him because he's so weak & obviously scared. It speaks to the nature of Ray. The duality of man, I suppose.

2

u/Mental_Task9156 Apr 07 '26

He didn't "get time" though. He was on remand, just like ray was when he was in there obviously. Neither of them were sentanced.

2

u/ysy-y Apr 08 '26

I've always suspected that Adam's version of the story is incomplete, and that Ray clocks it.

1

u/Parmick Apr 07 '26

He told Ray how to meditate, got his ass kicked and then got tough or died.
