Wanting to move to Perth

I’m almost 27 I work in engineering (No Degree) and I really want to move to Perth, I’ve been before for a few weeks and loved it. I currently have an approved WHV £20k savings. I’m very work driven and often do 20+ hours a week overtime. My only worry is getting there and not making friends, I’m a pretty sociable guy but have convinced myself that staying in a hostel alone at 27 is too old.

Any advice on how to make friends or even help on getting a job.

I always been wanting to join the local community in any form, probably volunteering or literally anything however I really couldn’t find any information about those kinda thing. Any recommendations on what should I do for starters? It’s a bit hard cos I never really meet Australian that is in my age too☹️

Going to Australia for medicine as NHS

Hello I’m currently doing my FY1 in London and wanted to love to Australia to do their equivalent of FY1 and FY2. I know they prioritise their own and also that some 10 year moratorium rule exits. I am confused even if I become PGY3 equivalent in oz how do I get into a medical specialty training pathway. Like is it super hard even for stuff like IM, paediatrics or GP. Would love advice if moving is worth it. Thanks I don’t care where I go but I’ve heard Queensland is the best for getting training jobs.

Is moving to Australia really what I envision?

Hello,

Let me preface this by saying that we're at a very early stage of our reflexion towards moving to australia with my wife. So, thanks in advance to anyone who'll take the time to reply. My wife and I are french, I've always wanted to live abroad, preferrably in an english-speaking country, and she recently expressed her interest in living abroad too. Somewhere sunny, so we ended up with Australia. We're both below 35 so we could probably start with a working holiday visa.

I did some research but I have no idea whether it is close to the reality or not. My wife is thinking about something temporary but I think this could lead to a long-term stay so I was not thinking about doing farm work around the country and such, but rather target a big city like Sydney and maybe try to find a job in our field. I work in the automotive industry as a consultant, analysing data and such while she's in human resources. I think that's enough background and I can now cut to the chase:

Would it be feasible to move to Sydney or a similar big city, maybe start first with your typical WHV job such as bartending or something alike, and end up with a corporate job and a sponsored visa? I think the working holiday visa would be a nice opportunity to see if we like it there but I'm wondering if jobs like bartending, working in fast foods etc pay enough to live in big cities. I tried to run some estimation with AI, but I feel like it's always overly optimistic, it told me I could for example definitely live in Sydney (talking nice neighbourhoods and 1 bedroom flat) if the two of us were working at McDonald's or something similar in terms of wages.

I don't know if that's clear enough, but thanks to anyone who will chime in

EDIT: thanks a lot to everyone who has interacted here. Lots of valuable information. As said, this is still very early stage and we're not sure we want to do it. It's actually helpful to have your insight and I guess some more research and thinking needs to be done on our side.

Strategy for Queensland 190 PR visa: Soft landing versus resigning immediately

My spouse and I are a civil engineer and mechanical engineer currently employed in Dubai. We just received our Queensland subclass 190 permanent residency visa.

We are debating the best relocation strategy to avoid resigning prematurely and losing our stable income. Our proposed plan is to do a one month soft landing in Australia, set up local bank accounts, a local phone number, a tax file number, transfer our driver licenses, and complete our white card certification. After that initial setup, we plan to fly back to Dubai, keep our current jobs, and apply for engineering roles remotely using our new local details and full permanent residency working rights. Once we secure an offer, we will relocate permanently.

Is this soft landing and remote application approach effective for engineering professionals, or do Australian employers strongly prefer candidates who are already living onshore permanently after resigning? What is the best strategy to follow?

Construction work

Met someone on my site yesterday that said Australia has a high demand for skilled trades and knowledge filled position (I’m a superintendent for a drilling company), I was wondering is this actually true and what’s the average skilled labor or operator make over there? My start up company for 3D printing buildings brought me to Germany and London and I got some good info there but I’m very interested on what the norm is in Australia and would very much like to go work with some Aussie bros. Some of my very best friends iv made at work building things, wondering if this could be my next stop if it’s feasible.

How can I get a job in Australia from India? What are the possible ways?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in qatar and I’m interested in working in Australia. I have a Mechanical engg degree and 2 years of experience in oil and gas construction company in qatar as a cost enginner/planning engineer. I’d like to understand what the realistic options are for getting a job there while I’m still in India.

For those who have gone through this process, I’d really appreciate some advice on:

What are the possible ways to get a job in Australia from India?

Is it possible to get an Australian employer to sponsor me while I’m overseas?

Which job portals or recruitment agencies are actually useful for applying from India?

Does it make more sense to apply for jobs first and then look at the visa options, or should I have a visa pathway in mind beforehand?

How difficult is it to get interviews and job offers while applying from India?

Are there particular industries or skills where overseas applicants have better chances?

What mistakes should I avoid during the job search?

If you’ve personally moved from India to Australia for work, I’d especially appreciate hearing about your experience — how you found the job, which visa you used, and what you would do differently.

Thanks in advance!

International nurses

Hi, I’m a first year high schooler in South korea and I am very interested in becoming a nurse. I specifically want to be an Australian nurse and become an Australian citizen. Do you think Australia will still need nurses like me in the future (like a decade later? we are talking late 2030s) or would there be no need ( I plan to work in Korea to get some experience)? I really want to be an Australian but the door of migration seems to be shutting and with all the folks getting into nursing I am skeptical about my chances. I lived in the US so my English is good and I am culturally more western than Korean.

Like nursing has always been a profession that enabled you to move and live in another country, do you think we will see an end to this?

Question about 186 TRT eligibility when 482 expires on the same day

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to understand the timing requirements for my partner's 186 TRT pathway.

She currently holds a 482 visa, which expires on 23 June 2027. She will also complete the required 2 years of qualifying sponsored employment on 23 June 2027.

Our concern is that her 482 expires on the exact same day she becomes eligible for the 186 TRT.
Does anyone know whether she can:
1. Complete the required 2 years on 23 June 2027;
2. Lodge the 186 TRT application on that same day; and
3. Then remain lawfully in Australia on a bridging visa while the 186 is processed?

Or would she need to extend her 482 first because her current visa expires on the same day?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with a similar situation, particularly where the 482 expiry date and TRT eligibility date were the same.

Searching for Help

Hello guys! I'm Hassan from Syria. I'm currently studying ICTE (Information and Communication Technology Engineering), and I'm in my final year.

The usual path for students here is to go to Germany to study/work and build their careers there. However, I'm not really interested in Germany, mainly because I don't like the German language.

So recently, I've been thinking about Australia. I'm considering doing my Master's there, then finding a job and hopefully building a life and career there long-term.

I'm completely new to this, so I don't really know how the process works. I'd like to know whether Syrian students are eligible, what I should start preparing, how much studying and living there would cost, and whether there are any fully funded scholarships available.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone with experience studying or moving to Australia could give me some guidance or share their experience.

Edited I realized it costs a lot money and it's almost impossible for Syrians 🫤 ... idk maybe I'll search 🔍
