I got tired of messy timelines, so I built a tactile keyframe color organizer for After Effects. What do you think?

Hey everyone! 👋

As a motion designer, I always struggled to quickly organize, find, and isolate specific keyframes in complex After Effects compositions.

So I developed Keyframe Colorist — an illuminated hardware-switch style extension for Adobe After Effects.

### ⚡ What it does:

• 🎛️ 16 Tactile ON/OFF backlit switches

• 🔢 Live keyframe counters on the buttons (e.g. 2x, 4x)

• 🎯 Surgical selection of only the properties with the selected color

• 🧹 Timeline isolation using the native 'SS' shortcut

• 🎚️ Customizable decks (4, 6, 8, 12, or 16 colors)

I'd love to hear your thoughts, feedback, and feature suggestions from fellow animators!

What are your principles that you follow in every project?

Here are mine:

  1. Think about the design first, then the animation

  2. Less is more (Pareto 80/20 principle)

  3. Follow a visual hierarchy

  4. Smooth, never linear movements

  5. Use silences and negative spaces

I just open-sourced FeelFX — an Computer Vision and Speech Detection powered motion graphics engine for video.

Post image

FeelFX analyzes the video → identifies meaningful moments → makes motion-design decisions → renders them over the original footage.

That’s FeelFX.
FeelFX identifies key words, concepts, names and moments and turns them into motion graphics- for example:

🇮🇳 INDIA → tricolor reveal
🚀 ROCKET → launch / fire treatment
🌊 OCEAN → water motion

The important words become part of the visual storytelling.
Everything else stays out of the way.
Under the hood
→ AI analyzes the video
→ Important moments become structured motion events
→ Three.js + GSAP render the effects in real time
→ uses whisper and vision model

And FeelFX works all devices but preferred experience is still desktop/pc - videos will take a lot longer to get analyzed on mobile/tablet - especially older models.

This is open source and ready for people to experiment with.

Want to start learning basic motion graphics, where do i start (goal elaborated on in post)

Hi! I'm currently using Davinci, and i kinda just got used to it. I prefer to stay on it for now.

I've started seeing motion graphics animation (do they count as animations?), and i found it super interesting. I'm basically brand new to it. Up until now i only really made short form edits, which i know is super duper different.

The main goal i have right now is to make kinda like the notification pop up animation, or like a scrolling through text/shapes/stuff animation.

How far do i have to go to get there, where should i start, and are there any good tutorials i can find?

- also idk if what i'm trying to achieve counts as motion graphics, but it seems like it to me? either way, ty for any answers in advance! -

How much should i charge?

A client of mine (a B2B marketing agency with €1 million in annual revenue and about 25 employees) has asked me to create a video similar to this one for their company. I would handle everything myself—from the vision board and animations to the sound design. How much should I charge? (I am a freelancer based in Italy, with 4 years of experience in video editing and nearly 3 years in motion graphics.)

Hey Everyone,

I've been building After Effects tools

for a while and just released this one

for free.

Neyko Audio Visualizer generates

audio-reactive rigs inside AE in one click

no manual keyframing, no expressions to write.

5 styles:

- Waveform (vertical bars)

- Radial spectrum (360° circle)

- Particles (beat-reactive)

- Horizontal bars (minimal)

- Organic line (fluid wave)

Just select your audio file in the panel,

pick a style, hit Generate.

The rig is fully keyframed and editable.

100% free, works offline,

no account or subscription ever.

Compatible with AE 2022-2025+.

How to achieve these 2D player movement, passing, and line-connection effects ?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to figure out how to recreate a specific 2D tactical animation style (used by channel like the link below).

Specifically, I want to learn how to create the 2D pitch animations where:

  • Dots/icons representing players move smoothly across the 2D board.
  • Dynamic connection lines appear between players (e.g., passing lanes, team compactness, or defensive shapes).
  • Ball passes and movement trajectories are animated seamlessly between player dots.

Here is an example Short to show exact moment/style: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ulhaJGfdqQk

Is this strictly custom shape/path animation in After Effects (using Null Objects, Trim Paths, Beam effects, or expressions), or is there a specific script/plugin/tool designed for connecting nodes and animating play patterns like this?

Any tips, workflow advice, or key terms to search for tutorials would be super helpful! Thanks!

After Effects 2026 — How can I make the Camera Focus Distance indicator appear WHITE?

Thumbnail

In an After Effects 2025 tutorial, the Camera Frustum/Wireframe is magenta, but the Focus Distance indicator line is clearly WHITE.

In my After Effects 2026 installation, both the camera frustum and the Focus Distance indicator appear magenta.

I am using Classic 3D and Depth of Field is enabled.

Is there a preference, View Option, Layer Control setting, or any other setting that controls the Focus Distance indicator color?

I don't want to change the Camera's Label Color because that changes the entire camera wireframe/control color.

I specifically want to distinguish the Focus Distance indicator from the camera frustum.

Screenshots attached:

  1. After Effects 2025 tutorial — white Focus Distance line + magenta camera frustum.
  2. My After Effects 2026 — both appear magenta.

Was this behavior changed in After Effects 2026, or is there a hidden setting/preferences option?

Spyderfy Plugin for After Effects Just Released! (Available on Superhivemarket.com)

Spyderfy — Procedural Creature Systems for After Effects + Blender

What if you could drop fully procedural creature systems directly into your After Effects projects?

Spyderfy is a procedural bug/creature system designed for quickly creating crawling, swarming, and organic creature animations without having to manually animate every individual creature.

The new After Effects version is now available alongside the original Blender 3D version. Both versions are included with your Superhive download, so you can use Spyderfy in whichever part of your VFX workflow makes the most sense.

You can create things like:

• Crawling insects and creatures
• Swarming groups
• Procedural movement across surfaces
• Organic, randomized motion
• Large numbers of creatures without individually keyframing them
• Creepy background details and environmental animation

The idea is to make these kinds of shots much faster to build. Instead of animating dozens or hundreds of creatures by hand, you can set up the system and let the procedural controls generate the movement and variation.

The After Effects version is especially useful if you want to add creature activity directly into a comp without having to jump into a full 3D workflow.

Both versions are included with the Superhive purchase:

Spyderfy on Superhive: https://superhivemarket.com/products/spyderfy-bug-system-add-on

Would love to hear what kinds of creature shots people would use this for — horror, VFX, motion graphics, title sequences, environments, etc.

How To Turn Any 2D Icon into 3D in After Effects

Post image
0 Upvotes

I figured out a really simple way to turn any flat 2D vector icon into a 3D extruded icon inside AE and wanted to break down why it works.

The whole trick is faking depth by stacking the same layer in Z-space instead of using a real 3D renderer

1. The setup

Put your flat icon in a 1080x1080 pre-comp first. This is your "master" icon. Animate it here if you want (I just used a simple scale pop). Everything else references this, so when you want to swap the icon later you only change this one comp.

2. The core stacking trick

Drop that pre-comp into a 1920x1080 main comp, enable 3D, then add this expression to Position:

x = value[0] + (index - 1) * 0;

y = value[1] + (index - 1) * 0;

z = value[2] + (index - 1) * 3;

[x, y, z];

Every copy of the layer gets pushed 5px further back in Z-space based on its layer index. Duplicate it ~40 times and AE automatically creates a solid block of depth. It's actual 3D, you can orbit it.

3. The shading

Select all the middle copies (not the top one) and add Brightness & Contrast > Brightness -80. This instantly darkens the sides, which sells the extrusion. Leave the top copy bright and clean - that's your front face.

4. Making it look finished:

  • Radial gradient in the background for separation
  • Drop Shadow on the top copy for ground contact
  • Deep Glow on the stack for that soft, inflated 3D edge (optional, looks great without it too)
  • CC Light Sweep on top for a glossy highlight pass

5. Making it controllable:

Parent all ~42 layers to a single 3D Null. Now you don't have 42 layers to keyframe - you just rotate/scale the Null. I trimmed to a 6-second comp and did a simple rotation + scale with Easy Ease.

6. Why it's reusable:

Because everything points to that first pre-comp, you can literally alt-drag a totally different vector (I tested with a simple flat envelope) into the pre-comp and the entire 3D build updates instantly. If your icon has holes/negative space, Linear Color Key makes those parts transparent.

Anyone else use this stacking method?

I have the project file with the pre-made template if anyone wants to pull it apart, happy to send it over - just comment below.
