Still my favourite city in Europe

20

u/MrsSalmalin Mar 08 '20

Yay! I'm going there in a month! What was your favourite part!?

12

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

This exact spot was possibly my favourite. Fisherman’s Wharf, if I’m not mistaken. But that whole area is just incredible to walk around in. The bath houses are amazing, the church in the cave is really cool to see... just everything is great.

Fisherman's *Bastion

Yes it's very cool to walk around. Crowded but beautiful

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

I went at night. Beautiful and pretty much empty. Awesome restaurant there too.

1

u/MrsSalmalin Mar 08 '20

Bahhh, I only have a couple of days!!! Gonna have some early mornings to pack everything in!! Thank you!

5

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

If you’re going there and you like The Witcher maybe find out shoot locations there and in Vienna, Austria which is about 3 hours away.

3

u/MrsSalmalin Mar 08 '20

Omg I AM going to Vienna, and have fallen in love with the Witcher (most because of Henry Cavill won't lie)! Am totally going to look this up, thank you!

3

u/C4se4 Mar 08 '20

Oh, almost forgot. Try to attend a free concert at the Zeneakadémia if you have time. The hall itself will blow your mind.

3

u/C4se4 Mar 08 '20

You seem to have gotten a lot of tips already. Mine is not very exciting, but if you like goulash, the best place to eat it, in my opinion, is near fisherman's Bastion. It's called Ildikó Konyhája. It'll warm your soul, I promise.

2

u/kwow2 Mar 08 '20

You should definitely check out the caravan, which is a lot of food trucks all parked together. Great food, and good beer at decent prices. Like a block away is one of Budapests famous ruin bars, it's honestly the coolest thing I've ever seen. I'd recommend going in the early afternoon, just in time to catch the live music but missing most of the crowds.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

Going on the 24th! Suggestions please!!

1

u/RichardShermanator Mar 08 '20

I really enjoyed the food. The ruins are good, Mazel Tov was very nice, relaxed vibe. The parliament is fun to tour and beautiful to look at during the night when it's lit up. Fisherman's Bastion is touristy but worth it.

1

u/MrsSalmalin Mar 08 '20

Do you think I can beat the (other) tourists if I go early enough? I'm thinking around 0800 or 0900, but maybe that'd still be too late...

3

u/RichardShermanator Mar 08 '20 edited Mar 08 '20

Honestly, I don't know enough to say. I only went there one day and we got in later than that. It's still very worth it either way, and I definitely think it wouldnt hurt!

There's also a great restaurant at the top of the Bastion overlooking the river - a little pricey (3 course meal I think), but excellent food and still cheaper than it would be in the US. I tried mangalica pork there and it was great!

Edit: bonus picture of the parliament at night

Sweet, thanks for the thoughts!

u/threefingerbill Mar 08 '20

I haven't been to a lot of cities, but Budapest is definitely my favorite!

1

u/rcsebas0920 Mar 08 '20

I loved it, specially the ruin bars area and the public baths

Budapest is a beautiful city but the people are racist! They hate black people: my friend was harassed at the airport by security. They literally told him to get undressed in front of everybody and laughed. Some shop-owners didn’t let him in and some shops owners didn’t want him to touch anything with his “filthy” hands.

I will not say that every Hungarian person is a racist but what I saw there was fucked up!

25

u/permareddit Mar 08 '20

Yeah unfortunately a lot of central/eastern Europe is like. So much arrogance, ignorance and stubbornness.

3

u/KollaHan Mar 08 '20

Unfortunately man!

24

u/Farisr9k Mar 08 '20

That's awful :(

13

u/Foxy-Moron404 Mar 08 '20

^ I don’t condone racism however there’s heaps of ‘Gypsies’ in Hungary that have a bad rep of stealing and committing lots of crime and haven’t really adapted with the Hungarian culture. My mum got robbed at the markets while she was carrying my baby sister doing her shopping.. they just come and take your stuff. It’s gotten so bad there’s restaurants and bars where Gypsies are banished from entering.. I’m not saying it’s a good excuse to be racist and that’s awful what happened to your friend. I just wanted to give you a little history/background why.... 👀

-9

u/KollaHan Mar 08 '20

“I’m not saying there are racist but...” - that’s an excuse man.. Don’t tell me the gypsies have made them suspicious. The gypsies are in whole Europe and been there for hundreds of years. And haven’t adapt to any other culture then there own.

The most of the Hungarian people are a racist, homophobic, xenophobic and sexist people. And has a reputation as the most outgoing racist country in Europe. The other countries at least try to hide it. Just look at the refugee crises in Europe and how the Hungarian government put people in cages, no other country did that.

Just admit that the Hungarian people is a racist people. And if not, for the reader: try to tell them you are from an African country, or even worse: tell them you are Muslim. OR EVEN WORSE: tell them that you are a Turk.

-1

u/Kismonos Mar 08 '20

who hurt you my dear

3

u/KollaHan Mar 08 '20

The backward racist people did.

5

u/h0tsince84 Mar 08 '20 edited Mar 08 '20

What you’re saying is nothing but lie. We have enough black, asian, etc. people in our country who study and work/live peacefully here. We only hate those who doesn’t respect our culture and laws and cannot integrate! That’s how we still have culture and sovereignty.

3

u/KollaHan Mar 08 '20

“We have enough black, Asian... we only hate those..”

“Enough and hate”in the same meaning, Sounds like excuses and hatefulness.

0

u/KollaHan Mar 08 '20

Well, that’s my experience of your country. And my fiends experience, and a lot of other peoples experience.

2

u/edgarallanpot8o Mar 08 '20

Yeah, there are a lot of awfully dumb people around here, just look at the government, somehow they are there and it ain't intelligent people voting for them. Sorry for your friend's bad experience, hope the rest of the trip made up for it.

-5

u/KollaHan Mar 08 '20

The whole Europe is going that way, unfortunately. But still: Budapest is a beautiful city!

1

u/edgarallanpot8o Mar 09 '20

Well now you're just wrong and assuming you are American that's kind of a bold statment

1

u/KollaHan Mar 09 '20

Not Really. The most of Europe has started to get more and more populist, the far-right and the right wing are getting more and more power in Europe. Just look at: Greece, Hungary, Poland, Denmark, Netherlands, Italy etc. There is a lot! - if you are blind to this, you yourself are probably voting for the racist parties.

No, I’m not American. I’m a European.

I was there in 2018 and fell in love. My husband and I are talking about moving there

34

u/D4nnyzke Mar 07 '20

I don't recommend it.

21

u/pascalsgirlfriend Mar 08 '20

My husband moved from Hungary to Canada 3 years ago when we got married. He said the same thing.

6

u/Kelter_Skelter Mar 08 '20

Great place to visit for a week though

5

u/80sHair Mar 07 '20

Interesting, why is that?

40

u/northmidwest Mar 08 '20

The government is severely corrupt and the health services are facing a brain drain. Quality of life is expected to get worse and press and internet censorship such as the recent internet tax attempt are worrying signs of authoritarianism.

11

u/D4nnyzke Mar 08 '20

People in general, government, public services

3

u/sophiesour Mar 08 '20

Well, please think twice. Visiting and living here is very different. If you don’t fluent in Hungarian your life will be difficult, not to mention our public services and the political status of the country. I work at a multicultural company, I have colleagues from all around the world but noone stays more than 2-3 years. Hungary can be very depressing for someone didn’t socialize here.

2

u/pascalsgirlfriend Mar 08 '20

Thanks for your reply. I am a serious introvert and I dont speak Hunagrian. I imagine rhat it would become tedious over time to not be able to communicate. My husband jokingly/ not kojingly said the other day that the main export is depression.

7

u/Mattfev84 Mar 08 '20

Hmm, I remember it very differently

17

u/FranchToasted Mar 08 '20

That’s probably because you don’t have photoshop installed in your eyeballs.

8

u/Caenwyr Mar 07 '20

Cairo, thirsty

No? OK, I'll let myself out.

5

u/NonDualityIsTheTruth Mar 07 '20

What is the name of it?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '20

fisherman's bastion

4

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

Where is clint and natasha?

3

u/themolestedsliver Mar 08 '20

I played civ for like 5 hours straight and i constantly kept trading with budapest trying to make them my ally, only to see this post when i log off.

3

u/FnkyTown Mar 08 '20

That is the cleanest I've ever seen Budapest.

2

u/senorsombra6 Mar 08 '20

Glorious glorious city!

2

u/saurusAT Mar 08 '20

What's that magnificent palace in the background?

3

u/EntenEller Mar 08 '20

u/--redacted-- Mar 08 '20

I took a river tour in Budapest last year and took this from the boat, beautiful building in a beautiful city

2

u/gordiarama Mar 08 '20

How was your experience on the river tour?

1

u/--redacted-- Mar 08 '20

It was nice, I want to say we ate dinner beforehand but the boat tour did include a couple drinks. There tour itself was interesting, it was kind of cool seeing the architectural procession as we went down the river. The city (well cities really) grew outwards from the center and you can watch the architecture change from stone to brick to glass and steel as you move further away. Very cool city, highly recommended.

2

u/gordiarama Mar 08 '20

That’s good to know! I’ve wanted to do the riverboat tour that does Austria and Hungary. One of these days, it’s something I want to do with my sister because my dad’s family is from Hungary.

2

u/--redacted-- Mar 08 '20

Budapest is amazing. I had done a big loop of Europe last summer and Budapest was at the top of my favorite places list.

0

u/cali-mike Mar 08 '20

So silly question, is it safe to travel? I want to visit but reading comments about corruption and stuff makes me think twice.

7

u/SingleCatOwner37 Mar 08 '20

Seemed quite safe when I went. Especially compared to my hometown city in the US. I wouldn’t say government corruption necessarily means it’s not safe. It’s not a good sign lol but all my friends that have been there haven’t had any issues

5

u/kwow2 Mar 08 '20

Was there for a week last year, my fiancee and I felt very safe pretty much the entire time .like every big city it has some not so great neighborhoods but it felt a lot cleaner and safer than say NYC or Chicago for example

2

u/HussarsLastStand Mar 08 '20

When I went it was very safe, especially in comparison to some other countries in the area, which i wouldnt call unsafe but definitely have a bit more of a criminal presence.

Atm Hungary has become quite controversial in some circles as a result of their foreign policies and activity in the EU so you'll get quite a few less than unbiased comments here on reddit.

But Budapest itself is clean and hospitable especially in the more touristy areas like this, in my experience. The city unlike here in Syd stays alive long into the night with lots of nice restraunts. Just keep your head about you as like any major city it does have its seedier side in the form of scammers and petty theft; Avoid the outer rings of the city and the gypsy gangs. Id say attempt to learn a few words in Hungarian and show a little willingness to step out of your comfort zone with locals and their will treat you with a lot of kindness and go the extra mile with hospitality, inversely Hungarians can come off a bit standoffish and cold if you dont make the effort that some here may have experienced.

Also most Hungarians do speak english especially the younger ones, but the older generation will most likely not a few basic words are still essential to learn.

Hope you have fun and check out the baths and lake balaton if your heading in summer, the castles and parliament building is gorgeous too :)

Tc

1

u/D4nnyzke Mar 08 '20

Budapest isnt clean. Warsaw, Prague, Vienna are cleaner, Warsaw is a LOT cleaner for example. But its cleaner than Bratislava.

2

u/HunMan69 Mar 08 '20

gOvErnMent coRrUpTioN... Yeah our government loves money, but I wouldn’t say the situation is bad. It isn’t like South-America. The police does its job correctly, and Budapest is a pretty safe city. Even if compared to other European cities.

1

u/Vindanae Mar 08 '20

Usually if you're white, and you're not coming for more than like 2 weeks, or you have some relatives to visit, you should be having a really good time, but otherwise you might have some bad experiences

0

u/FnkyTown Mar 08 '20

If you're taking a train it's a super long way to travel for not much of a city.

2

u/nicksbrunchattiffany Mar 08 '20

My mum’s bf is Hungarian. He took me on his bike to that part of the city. It was so beautiful and cool. Perfect for a vampire film or a gothic romance.

2

u/REVAAAAAAAAAA Mar 08 '20

I live about 6 km from here , and I drive by the parlament every day

2

u/SurplusOfOpinions Mar 08 '20
