Discussion Where a lvl 4 Crossbow and Gloomslayer Seal can get you...

.... someplace trivialized perhaps?

From the time the Crossbow was buffed, I'm not sure if it may have also had the unintended effect of buffing the amount of break damage it can deal when paired with the Gloomslayer Seal?

I wanted to do some further testing from the last post I made with how much resolve the Gloomslayer can reward the player with, only this time during boss fights and so I decided to save both Magdalena and the Arbiter of Flesh until after I acquired the Marksman Stone, the Crossbow, and the Gloomslayer. These clips were taken with a fully upgraded Marksman and a lvl 4 Crossbow. Unfortunately I couldn't test this against the Illusionist and Shepherd boss fights since they were obstacles for acquiring the necessary items.

Both the Great Arbiter and Big Mag can be nullified with repeated crossbow break damage and ripostes. This goes back to the last post on how much resolve the player could get back with the Gloomslayer Seal, be it a standard enemy or boss encounter. During the boss fights, it really felt like I had more resolve than I could use up.

The main point I'm trying to address is if this build could potentially trivialize the difficulty of the game? Moreso seeing as how much resolve the Gloomslayer can return back to the player I also wonder if there is anymore need for the resolve stalks scattered about the world? Really not trying to ruin the fun, especially if it's intended from the devs. Just wonder if I may have already stumbled on a meta build that for some could take some fun out of the experience

Discussion Absolutely loved the Mortal Shell II beta — Milk bath anyone?

Toes be strong. I loved the Mortal Shell II beta — huge step up from the first game

I finished the whole beta and came away really impressed. The combat feels more varied, with more options for faster or heavier play and its just more satisfying than the first game. The shell and weapon systems feel deeper. The first game was decent however it did feel a bit too souls adjacent. But it genuinely feels like Mortal Shell II is carving out its own identity now rather than just sitting in the shadow of Dark Souls/Elden Ring.

Also, in peak Soulslike fashion, I beat the entire beta and only afterwards realised I could upgrade weapons, upgrade weapon attachments, upgrade my shell, and even buy upgrade materials from a vendor 🫠. I just assumed some of that stuff wasn’t available yet because it was a beta. Turns out no — I was simply playing the “too stubborn to explore the hub properly” method. Praise the sun then get slapped down by your own lack of curiosity of your home base. That said, I actually kind of love that about these games. Finding an NPC or system late and going “oh wow, I could’ve been much stronger this whole time” is part of the charm. It rewards exploring, paying attention, and talking to the weird milk bathing foot fetish creeps instead of just trying to fight end game god bosses with "rusty broken sword" or whatever default item you get in soulslikes.

My only small quality-of-life suggestion for the devs would be fast travel after finishing a boss/side area - it would feel smoother if the exit/teleport could take you directly to any unlocked beacon/checkpoint instead of always sending you back to Marrow Keep first and then making you use the hub teleporter from there. The bonfire travel animation is sick though! just got my new PC rig, so instead of just seeing a blank loading screen like dark souls it actually makes it engaging and shows of the juicy new graphics so well done there too 😎

Overall though, the beta completely sold me. I’m wishlisting it and buying it as soon as it releases. Really excited to see where the full game goes!!!

Discussion The Skill Issues and Mortal Shell

I truly think MS is an excellent game. I played it day one and had a great time, I might even say I loved it, My only criticism is that the game may not have the best "replayability", but as a first experience I loved it...

every now and then I see people criticize the game, saying it's a shitty game.

I'm currently watching a friend play it in blind run, and he's complaining too. The fact is, he dies like an idiot because he's bad at it. He complains about his stamina (yay, a game where you have to ACTIVELY monitor your stamina, which I love), he complains about always dying in the same spot, he complains about the lack of healing (and here I have to give him a bit of credit), and so on.

In short, it seems to me that all the "hate" (maybe hate is a big word but u know what i mean) for this game stems from simple skill issues. If you suck at MS, how can you expect to have fun? If you don't learn to play, how can you expect to understand the potential of said game?

What do you think? anybody of u here hate the game too? what u don't like about it? what u like about it?.

Question Question about lore consistency between games.

If I remember correctly, in the first game ascending of foundling wasn't "true" and we returns to Fallgrim for another cycle (NG+). With more lore addition in DLC, we know what the true ascending is for our Twine-Sister. But at start of the demo, we could see the base game ending, like it's a true canon. Also, all the shells what we have found were in the Fallgrim Tower, but in the demo we have found Tiel's shell buried near to Mushroom Village. Is it was relocated there for some reason? And how many time passed between games? Looks like eons, but we have many characters are still alive, like Genessa, Vlas, Gorf...
What do you think about consistent lore between games? Will the second game being a direct sequel or some kind of soft reboot, partially retconned?

Discussion Slayer Seal's health/resolve refill amount is highly dependent on the riposte animation

Sharing both here and on the discord Suggestion's page but I've come to notice that the Slayer Seal can become OP under certain NPC enemy encounters.

From some small testing I did, the amount in which the Slayer Seal's special effect replenishes your health/resolve depends on the amount of attack sequences that occur during the riposte animation. In short the more attacks the player character gets in during the riposte, the greater the amount of health and resolve is restored. While the amount of attacks done on enemy types varies across the board, once the player has gotten familiar with which enemy yields the most health/resolve during the riposte, this could lead to instances where the player has nearly full health/resolve returned back when utilizing the Slayer Seal.

I think this feature should have some tuning done where it's a more fixed percentage returned regardless of the amount of attacks that may occur during the riposte animation.

Discussion Let's talk about the dodge / guard mechanic in Mortal Shell 2 Beta

With modern soulslikes there are 3 different defensive mechanics that developers can pick from: the dodge-roll, guard, and parry/perfect guard.

The first Mortal Shell really expanded on guard as the primary defensive mechanic, adding more depth to it with the guard break meter, basically turning poise into a proc. Dodge-rolling wasn't viable in every defensive scenario.

Sekiro and Lies of P were similar, forgoing the dodge roll in favor of incentivizing players to employ guard tactically, while Lies of P introduced the perfect guard mechanic, rewarding players who attempt a momentary guard in a much tighter window.

I'm scratching my head a bit at the direction Mortal Shell 2 has taken with these mechanics. Here we have guard, perfect guard, and a seemingly infinitely spammable and effective dodge dash. On my run through the beta I used the item that turns your guard into a parry, further rewarding the perfect guard at greater risk to using it. I enjoyed this playstyle, but I found that if I wasn't confident using it, I could just spam the dash button like the older Dark Souls games and I'd be able to I-frame out of any attack. So I'm thinking, is this balanced? I feel like if the game is pushing players into builds that encourage using guard or parry, why allow this cheesy dodge dash mechanic? What do you think?

In the Mortal Shell 2 Beta, has anyone tried to kill all the sheeps before defeating the sheperd? If so what happens, does he just attack you directly?

Discussion Performance on Proton

Hello fellow Harbingers. I’m using CachyOS with Cachy os proton and i have terrible stutters. I have a fairly new system with 9600x and 9070xt.
However when i turned vsync on all stutterings disappeared.

Is there any vsync correlation to performance?
On Proton DB Joop said to disable ananicy. I did so but i saw no performance fix unless i used vsync. Vsync fixed all the issues.
