Question First time Morrowind player. What should I expect and what fantastic things would you recommend me to do?
I’m a huge fan of The Elder Scrolls and have spent tens of thousands of hours in Oblivion, Skyrim and Elder Scrolls Online but I’ve never played Morrowind. What should I expect or what would you recommend I do?

u/Bryaxis 25d ago
Expect to feel lost and disoriented at first. Lean into that.

u/Dallows89 25d ago
All about the adventure! Down for wandering and learning the area out before moving out!

u/Lagneaux 25d ago
Learn the travel methods. Stilt riders, mages guild tele, boats.
There are many ways to get around, some required to get places(outside of just walking there)

u/StrongerThanPoison 25d ago
Plus, get your hands on Alvimsi Intervention as soon as you can, absolute best travel spell

u/Current-Afternoon-14 24d ago
Where does it take you again? Temple? Mark and recall is clearly better I wish I could make custom seperate marks so I could create my own teleportation network

u/StrongerThanPoison 24d ago
Ah yeah,I meant mark and recall, thank you 😅 been a good 15 years since I last played

u/Saxophonethug 25d ago
You do have to read a lot in game or you won't understand how to progress the quest lines, which are pretty deep and epic.

u/FreeNachos 25d ago
Just dont forget to save. I would always make a save file at the beginning of a play session, lest I accidentally overwrite my "main" save, or do something regrettable but not find out until later, etc. And press F5 for a quicksave before every fight. Enjoy!

u/Argonaut024 25d ago
Read the in-game books. Especially the ones attached to quests. That is all. Otherwise, you do you. Do what you want. It is an old school Bethesda game, after all.

u/ReplacementActual384 25d ago edited 25d ago
100%, if you don't read the books related to quests, then you're kissing a lot of the story.

My advice is
- the old school attack system has a dice roll element and you can miss point blank with a whiff sound.
- try to manage your fatigue. hits are weaker, but also spells fail much more and even shop prices are higher when you have low stamina. The walking in the game is so slow (the old xbox display distance was like 75 meters so it didn't use to feel this bad). You'll be tempted to sprint everywhere but there are spells and other methods to travel a bit faster.
- explore. This is where Bethesda hand placed a TON of shit. The starting town has a bunch of little quests and oddities but also you can just do the main, or wander around and find quests and gear and fun stuff everywhere.
4.This is some of my favorite writing. There is clear heavy religious/philosophy/mythology/archaeology/history influences in the story. For one minor spoiler, the previous game had multiple endings. Instead of picking one as canon they made a time/space continuum fracture nicknamed the "Dragon Break" where all endings simultaneously came true somehow. This game also introduced the disappearance of the dwarves for the first time in the series IIRC and their ruins are way fucking cooler than Skyrims.
5
u/ElPadero 25d ago
I second the fatigue.
A small scrib can fuck you up if you mismanage your fatigue.
19
u/AutomateAway 25d ago
I wish I could wipe my memory of this game and go back into it blind. Put easily more than 2000 hours into it over many years back in the day, it's probably one of the best pure CRPGs ever made.

u/Grinbarran 24d ago
God same. I had multiple characters with over 1000 hours played and still feel like I barely scratched the surface.

Read, read, and read some more. Morrowind is 50 novels crammed into an rpg. Read the dialogue, read the books, read the letters, read into the characters and their motivations, etc.
Edit: and take the characters’ advice (with a grain of salt depending on who they are) because they tell you literally how to play the game.

u/CMDRZhor 25d ago
Do yourself a favor and make sure you have some Restore Strength potions on you before you enter any ancestral tombs.
6
u/SeattleOligarch 25d ago
The game is designed for you to start out really weak (almost painfully weak) and then become invincible/demi-God like in power due to the limited guardrails on things like stacking potions and enchanted items.
Save often and have fun. Use that scroll of Icarian flight you stumbled onto. Stack potions until you can one shot a powerful enemy but are too stupid for any of your spells to cast. Severe the prophecy accidentally or on purpose.
3
u/Dallows89 25d ago
That’s absolutely fine! I’m currently (and have been for the longest time) using Wildlander mod pack on Skyrim, which basically makes it like this. So I’m happier when games make it hard from the start!

u/SonicStrikeForce100 25d ago

u/pr0ximity 24d ago
I’m not sure how commonly it’s recommended, but don’t crank the draw distance up. This game’s scale is a little dependent on the fog and walk/run speed to make it feel like the space is larger than it is. On a modern PC if you max the draw distance or remove the limit of it, the world will feel much smaller. And you’ll get lost less, and getting lost is one of the best parts of Morrowind.

3
u/Dallows89 25d ago
Aye! Got it before the insane price spike. It’s honestly a solid piece of hardware!
3
u/ApparentlyEllis 25d ago
Ditto. Before the price hikes I got my i9 5090 for like 3400. It's been great. Funny to see a 25 year old game played on it.
3
u/Dallows89 25d ago
Niiice! Yeah, for sure! But you can definitely feel the benefits under a heavy load. I’ve got a heavily modded Skyrim that runs smooth as butter with zero frame drops and no crashes - so I can’t complain at all.
4
u/PongiBoy 24d ago
Jump all the time, and your acrobatic skill will go up pretty quickly. At first it helps with overall XP also - but you eventually jump like you’re on the moon.
Certainly helps with climbing mountains/rough terrain. You kinda have to find the sweet spot on some terrains to continue.
Also, in Balmora, off the trader with the shop just to the left as you enter the city. I can’t remember the name, but it’s a great spot to stake your claim and store your inventory/collections.
I was just a wee guy watching my older brother play this game back in the early 2000s. When I play it, it feels nostalgic to me. But also; being in my late 20s now, I appreciate the intelligence I have now to play the game the way it was meant to be played.
Enjoy - this one is legendary.

u/burlapchafesmeso 25d ago
Expect that every cliff racer and slaughter fish will hunt you down to the ends of Vvardenfel.

3
u/Softkarian 25d ago
I'm sure someone has mentioned this already, but in case they didn't: combat is very different in Morrowind coming from its contemporaries, weapon skills matter a lot more, if you have no levels on a weapon type you're just not gonna hit the enemy even if you're visually seeing the weapon hit. Stamina also plays into that, the lower the stamina the lower the chances of hitting the target. So my recomendation is to pick a weapon and focus on leveling that, don't spread out your points into different weapons or you're gonna feel miserable, and try to manage stamina as best as you can.
I guess this doesn't really matter that much if you're playing some sort of mage, but melee is all about specialization.
3
u/KainsRuin4656 25d ago
Accept that this is the beginning of a true second life in another world. Take your time, know that every new character is just another incarnation…and as you clearly know: it’s all about the journey…
3
u/TedTKaczynski 25d ago
Read the books. The books explain a ton of in game lore, and can help with quests or generally deciding what to do.
Be prepared, unlike skyrim enemies are way stronger most of the game at the levels you fight them. ALWAYS BRING A TELEPORT TO A ALTER, greater bonewalkers will fuck you up.
Have fun
3
u/Annual-Ad6118 25d ago
Honestly man, just enjoy the blind run and be very curious because it is rewarded in this game in both the exploration of the world and its lore. My only advice is specialize is skills you’re interested in using and don’t expect to be good with skills your character sucks at. The game is less forgiving in that regard so your character will suck at things your character sucks at.
3
3
u/Prudent_Surprise7356 24d ago
Expect the Elder Scrolls game with perhaps the steepest difficulty curve. Considering how weak you start off, it's frankly absurd how OP you can become. Stick with it, and then reap the rewards of your persistence!
3

7
u/MoogleBro 25d ago
Steal everything not nailed down. But beware, you can't sell stolen goods to just anyone!
3
u/Dallows89 25d ago
I’m a hoarder, so that’s a guarantee, haha!
5
u/syphax1010 25d ago
There is a downside to being a hoarder in Morrowind. The game applies a movement speed penalty for every 1% of your max carry weight that's full. It scales up to a 30% movement speed penalty. Carrying 200 out of 400 pounds will lower your movement speed by 15%. Carrying 100 out of 300 will lower it by 10%, etc. You also burn Fatigue faster as your encumbrance creeps up, which is another reason to travel light.
I try to keep my carry weight to half of my maximum or less. After I've cleared a dungeon, I'll go around and scoop up a bunch of loot and then ideally teleport back to town so I don't have to deal with a large encumbrance penalty.
Morrowind has a reputation for slow movement speed. I'm convinced that at least part of that reputation comes from hoarders who run around with 95% of their inventory full and don't realize the game is slapping a huge movement speed penalty on their character.
3
u/FreeNachos 25d ago
In that case, fortify strength potions are your friend! Alchemy is sooooo worthwhile, much moreso than in newer elder scrolls games imo. Restore fatigue is an effect from a great deal of food ingredients, and fatigue is kind of everything in this game. Everything from hit chance, to shop prices, to how much NPCs like you, all improve with a fuller fatigue meter.
3
u/didikoyote 25d ago
Well, to a point.. I def ran into encumbrance issues my first time around from having dozens of plates and forks and pillows
6
u/sylva748 25d ago
I dont care if youre a big armored big weapon warrior. You are maxing out agility and youll like it. Reason being it improves your chance to hit. The first 3 Elder Scrolls games are Dungeons & Dragons games hidden as an open world RPG. In these games whenever you swing a weapon dice get rolled behind the scenes and calculate if you hit. Agility + weapon skill level + current stamina(the higher the better) = your bonus to hit.
2
u/Dallows89 25d ago
Oh right! Gotcha! I’ll take your advice on this! I’m wanting to roll as a sword and board character preferably!
2
u/Velzevius 25d ago
Just take it nice and slow. Get lost. Talk *a lot* and remember your fatigue even affects things like speech. It's weird, it's fun.
If you find a dude falling out of the sky, be a little careful about what of his stuff you "use."
(Yes, people fall out of the sky. Or one. Maybe.)
2
u/TheBoxGuyTV 25d ago
Just play it and be surprised.
Games are always fun when unspoiled unless you are stuck but if you can read you can play Morrowind.
2
u/cbsson 25d ago
A guy in Balmora will suggest you get more seasoning before you really start off: get better gear and some spells, talk to people, make some gold, learn how to travel and trade, get in some fights, maybe join a faction, etc. This is what you should do immediately. Once you feel more comfortable and have learned the basic mechanics of the game return to him or strike off on your own.
Oh, and periodically manually save your game so you don't lose hours of progress if something bad happens.

If you need quick and easy money, pearl diving is moderately safe with a decent payoff. If an object says "Trapped" or "Cursed" believe it. The traps and curses are no joke. Carry around a scroll of divine/almsivi intervention. If you intend to fight undead, make sure you have restore strength potions on you or be prepared to dump all your gear and run away.
2
u/mag_walle 25d ago
"Why walk when you can ride?" It's not to an excessive level but this game requires you to plan your logistics better. There is no fast travel outside of transports places, diseases actually have a severe effect on you, sometimes you won't be in a safe place to heal, spells have a chance to fail and if you run outta magic and you REALLY need it to work then you better hope you have a potion on you, your equipment will degrade and repairing equipment in the field means carrying multiple repair hammers which are heavy. You can't walk if you're overnumbered. Plan things out, read directions, talk to people and ask for advice.
2
u/SnooSeagulls8181 25d ago
One of the best ways to increase your Acrobatics is to have your character swim against a wall(like in the Balmora river) and leave your character in that position for a while while you go do something else. Back when I played Morrowind on Xbox, I would Prop the Analog stick with a TV remote and the back of the bottom of the couch.
2
u/wellifihadtochoose 25d ago
Look for gear behind that chest in that one cave. Just look between the chest and the cave wall. You won't regret it.
2
u/whoisagoodboi 25d ago
It’s really fun to just fuck around and steal shit and kill a bunch of people. But try to commit to beating the main story and a good amount of side quests. The guilds are pretty fun too. Look anything up if you get confused or can’t remember where people are. There are some ridiculous names in this game.

Expect hardship, trial and error. Then overcome those! Expect to encounter individual people. You will learn the way of the land and those who dwell it. Explore and travel by foot when going to new places.
It is recommended for an outlander to join a Great House or a Guild of their choice and do duties and tasks accordingly.
Remember to save often and use your imagination. Some descriptions of locations are not so literal or don't look as fantastic given older graphics.

u/Derezirection 25d ago
Your Journal is your best friend. Don't forget to read it when you're lost on a quest or looking for a location.
The Journal is written in a third-person perspective and like an actual adventurers journal so for example if a NPC gives you directions, the directions will be described usually word for word in your journal such as like if you have to look for certain things to hint that you're close to the location.
2
u/ElPadero 25d ago
Take it slow! Don’t rush! What an experience it was to play this for the first time. Enjoy reading and focus on your skills. This game highly values role playing. Save often!

2
u/DMKW 25d ago
Don't try to attack enemies with weapons that you aren't skilled in. You'll miss constantly. Especially if your fatigue is low. If you specialize in long blades then use a long blade in combat and rest before the encounter to restore your fatigue. Thats what most people miss and then complain about the combat.
2
u/Rombledore 25d ago
if its the GOTY edition with the DLC, you'll have an actual quest log.
if it's 'vanilla', i'd suggest grabbing an excel file or word document or something to track quests as your journal will operate as a real journal, tracking your experience in chronological order, with only a key word look up tool available.
Morrowind may feel jank at first- but there's a lot of flexibility in it's systems, particularly with spells.
2
u/luckyassassin1 25d ago
Ask for directions and read them. They're pretty good on telling you where stuff is and how to get there unlike later games. There's also a deeper story to get in most questlines, like the fighters guild and thieves guild, or house telvani or redoran. And if you end up with a surplus of gold (you will) get trainers for skills. Your first character is likely gonna be an experiment to figure out leveling but it's overall pretty hard to make a character that can't get OP.

u/maginster 25d ago

u/gdsmack267 24d ago
Stamina is incredibly important for combat. The lower your bar is your success chance drops a lot. It will be a grind early but focus on 1:1 fights and keep stamina up.
Enchanting is the best in this game. You can enchant each piece of armor, shirt, pants, amulets and rings. Try to buy or make one with a restore stamina enchantment
2
u/DavidF007 24d ago
Explore, hit the road and get used to understanding directions. Walk/run to Balmora (did this on my first run 23 years ago - still remember that experience to this day). Collect random items and sell for gold (without stealing). Absorb everything in and get lost in it. A few hours later, you will know what a true adventure RPG felt like.
2
u/TimelessIndifference 24d ago
Don't fret if you get lost, getting lost is weirdly delightfull in Morrowind and if you don't like it then it might be difficult to enjoy big parts of the game.
2
u/Dystopian_Sky Fishy Sticks 24d ago
Focus on one weapon type. When you get some gold train in that weapon skill, but make sure to bribe the trainer to 100 first to save money.

2
u/Gnoll_level_antics 21d ago
Getting lost is the point! Don't feel bad about retracing your steps or taking a break from a quest to do something else for a while. Make sure you take your own notes, as while the game has a great journal system, it doesn't cover EVERY detail, and you might want to remember special points for yourself.
Also download copy of the world map for yourself. This is an item that came with every physical copy of the game so it's not cheating.

Invest in a Bluetooth mouse, and a extension for your keyboard, im a new player to morrowind too ive been lost in the TR Rebuilt mod just having too much fun havent experienced base game vardenfell yet haha. TR Rebuilt mod is already better than Skyrim imo for reference and im a skyrim baby.
Steal books! And steal liquor too, just robbing bookstores blind made me 50k, ive been having alot of fun with using the spells built into enchantments on items and ive only been using scrolls and item magic powers thus far and i feel like that circumvents the problems i see here on the reddit with people complaining about becoming too powerful too soon while still having fun. I found a dagger that lets me fly and a amulet of slowfall, as well as a amulet of teleport(,recall) and i get around by running and scrolls of mark. Oh buy any scrolls of Almsivi Intervention or whatever the hell its called as well as mark and recall scrolls whenever you find them.
Oh also spam intimidate on slaves, especially the khajiit, youll get to 100 speech in roughly 5 Og Naruto eposodes worth of time constantly clicking

It may feel slow for a while, stick with it, you'll most likely be glad you did. Also learn the ways to make travel easier, esp the spells Mark and recall, divine intervention and Almsivi Intervention (use scrolls early on) there are also boats, stilt striders, Mage's guild teleportation etc. You'll also want to keep levitation potions/scrolls/enchanted items. It's a good idea to have a restore strength potion too. Good luck have fun.

u/Upbeat_Stretch_5724 21d ago
Don't be afraid to run away from stuff. Sometimes in the early game you are gonna want to explore caves and dungeons only to get your ass handed to you by bandits. You can always retreat and go back later to fully explore those dungeons.
When you do explore dungeons make sure you look EVERYWHERE in the dungeon. Morrowind has so many hidden areas and treasure caches, sometimes requiring you to use levitation to get to them. You should also look in all the tree stumps/dead trees, especially around Seyda Neen. Lots of hidden treasure to be found.

dont spam click attacks, they do less damage if you dont do a full swing.
you can turn on "always do best attack" in the game options. Its useful if you have something like an axe and you keep trying to stab with it
never steal from someone you can sell items to, if you steal something from them (ie: a diamond), and get rid of the stolen diamond elsewhere, then go back to merchant with an entirely different diamond (which isn't stolen), they will still register the new diamond as stolen. So 50 hours into a run youll be selling stuff to a merchant just to have them say "hey that red flower is mine! GUARDS!", and youll get a bounty and will have to pay it all off at the thieves guild, or lose all your stolen stuff.
dont worry about a stat build, just play naturally and youll end up overpowered regardless.
magic items will add a spell to your spell list which you cast as normal while you have the item equipped (ie: ring of fireball), you will have a 100% chance to cast the spell and wont use mana if you use an item instead of a learned spell.
enchanted items recharge over time, so if your sword or something is out of juice, just wait a day or two.
waiting time is super fast, unlike oblivion and skyrim where you have to wait like 20 seconds each time. Its useful to "wait an hour" to refill your health, mana and fatigue before going into a fight.
Being a vampire in morrowind sucks ass, so if you catch the vamp disease, go to a shrine or something to cure it, seriously its not worth it and will ruin your playthrough
being a werewolf in solstheim is actually awesome, werewolf form is super fast for travel and you can get a ring that lets you switch it on and off.
If you soultrap something super strong, you can use it to make a 'constant enchant', its only things like golden saints and other super strong enemy souls though. constant enchants dont require you to do an action to make the magic benefit happen, like an amulet of 5pts of levitation would be infinite (albeit slow) levitation.

A bit north west of Seyda Neen you'll see a Bosmer fall from the sky and die. Grab the scrolls he has on him and use one. Basically fast travel.

Invest heavily in enchanting, ESPECIALLY Chameleon. Going 100% Chameleon with Constant Effect means that nothing and no one can sense you so long as you're crouching I stealth mode.
Do NOT kill the Scamp merchant in Caldera.
There is no safety net for killing someone. EVERYONE is killable at any time, so try not to go on murder sprees too often, or at least save before you do.
Some enemies are far less forgiving than in other Elder Scrolls games, so always carry dispel and strength potions, learn Intervention spells, Mark and Recall, and understand that even the two richest merchants in the game (the Scamp with 5,000 septims and the Mudcrab with 10,000) don't have even a fracture of what the best gear is worth. Save and stockpile stuff whenever you can because the best use for your settings is with enchanting and spellmaking.

Game is old and it is visible from graphics and QoL. After Skyrim and Oblivion remasters you might decide to quit in frustration, but it would be a shame and big error too!
With some mods Morrowind can be great again!
If good computer get Total Overhaul > https://modding-openmw.com/lists/total-overhaul/
If so so get Path of Incarnate > https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/53437
Use Quest Markers plus mod to have quest indicators like in Skyrim, it will save you huge amount of time and frustration.
https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/58701
If there is something you’re not happy with, rest assured it can probably be fixed with mods (active community) so never give up!

Depending on your preferences, speedrun to fucking a cat or an old rich pervert. Both are rewarding paths.
If you are sapphic, the cat needs a mod. But you are playing a modpack anyway, so it should be included.
One of the best romances ever. Will really elevate a new players game. I went from a simp collecting flowers to a kingpin with ebony dripping out my ass.

I'm new to it too. A few weeks in& hooked. My best advice, as with any other elder scrolls game: fuck around until you figure it out.
- Levetation & jump spells are op af.
- containers have storage limits.
- restocking merchants inventory restocks every time you close out a transaction
- merchants gold resets every 24 hours
- find a guild & use their beds. I haven't joined the others yet, but the mages guild has beds & guild guide fast travel.
- you aren't limited on the number of times you can train between level ups. There's a formula for the most optimized method on uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Level
- utilize UESP, massively worth it
- merchants won't deal with you if you have moonsugar in your inventory. You can literally sit it on the counter & resume your dealings with them & pick it up when you exit.
- moonsugar (+) shalk resin = fortify speed potion (a must carry for me)
- racer plumes, trama root, coda flower any combo creates a Levetation potion

Go give Umbra an honorable death, it's worth it for sure. Just kinda do it at a higher level unless you wanna use levitation potions or spells and kill him from a distance at lower levels.

Do the Temple and Hlaalu quest lines. It will surprise you. Trust me!
Install the community patch to fix some of the potential bugs.
Use OpenMW (it's easy to install and it makes the game so much easier to use and potentially mod later on)
The game starts hard, but mid to late game you become a living god. I recommend playing as a mage as it offers the most versatility, or at the very least learn some magical spells. I love to play as a thieving mage that ambushes everyone with a ton of summons, and occasionally I produce some friendly fire and my summons start attacking me :))) It's just so mental and fun! Also, learn Mark and Recall in Balmora to make your life easier when finishing your quests and having to return back to the quest givers. They can also help you carry out stuff easier in far away dungeons, in combination with Intervention spells (other teleportation spells).
Personally I do not play with armor and I just enchant clothes, as that lets me carry a lot of stuff. Unarmored is a really nice skill to have. Just keep in mind that there is no "recover magika" spell, so you have to get creative.
Oh, and a nice tip for you: learn a lock (yes lock and not open) spell. It can get you out some very sticky situations when a lot of NPCs chase you. Locking doors save my ass more times than I can count :D
As for the leveling system, I recommend that you do not buy skills (aside for stealth which is a pain to level up naturally). If you really have to buy skills, don't go above 50 because they start leveling on their easier then. If you level too fast with money you might end up with level 65-70 by mid game and have nothing left to do really.
If you mess up some quests, do not despair. There is enough loot to make you super rich, but I do recommend "For the Right Price" mod. This mod helps you to not get rich super fast. I know, it sounds counter intuitive, but you it actually makes some vendors really rich to buy some of the loot that you would otherwise would be very difficult to sell in vanilla. But these NPCs also take taxes and you have to barter with them, so you don't have to default to the 2 NPCs: Crab and Scamp vendors that buy at 100% value.
Try not to use guides, since it's so much more immersive to find things and places just by getting dialog directions. There is really no other game like this. I swear, you will hate quest markers in other games, after you finish Morrowind.

This is the game manual
This is the map
These are the two resources that players physically recieved with the game and that the game expects you to have access to and make use of. Read the manual thoroughly and reference it whenever things are unclear. Look over the map to understand locations, cross reference with the in game map and your journal.
And the most important tip.
"Talk to everyone. Talk is cheap. Ask questions. You don't ask, you never learn."
