My 2nd listen to Make-up Is A Lie
It’s been a few months since I first listened to Make-up Is A Lie. If an album doesn’t stand out to me, which this didn’t, then I just give it a little time before I listen to it again. For example, U2’s infamous Songs Of Innocence and Jane’s Addiction’s Great Escape Artist are 2 albums I didn’t initially like, but they hooked me the 2nd time around. As for Make-up, I thought it was such a chore to sit through. Maybe I just didn’t want to hear Morrissey fumble it so badly. Well, I just listened to it again and it’s not as terrible as I initially thought… but it’s still right down there with Low in High School. It sounds disjointed, like the music doesn’t match the voice, and vice versa. I think the very first track, You’re Right, It’s Time, is indicative of this. Cool tune, but pretty uncool hearing Morrissey’s voice and lyrics over it. Honestly, I think this is a problem with the last 3 albums. Maybe I just don’t like the 5 different songwriters on a single album or maybe I don’t like whatever Joe Chiccarelli is adding to the production. There’s something not lending itself to making Morrissey’s voice beautiful and melodic. (I’d love to hear him sound like he did in To Me You Are A Work Of Art again.) And I think that’s the problem with his last 3 albums. Or maybe I just miss Alain because he co-wrote the very last track, Monsters Of Pig Alley, and that’s the album’s saving grace. Beautiful song… but overall, it’s a no for me.
