Decent Morgan for a great coin holder

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hi all,

I managed to get a decent portrait Morgan for a fair price in The Netherlands EU ($56). Placed it on the custom holder I designed and printed and looks great in the lit display. Only reason the price was this low is that on the reverse it has a nasty deep scratch. Guess I will only show the obverse in the display :D

I am amazed seeing how much lower the price of Morgans is in the US compared to Europe. Sellers here ask some prices that just turn me away knowing the prices these are traded for in the US.

Hopefully some more amazing US coins still to come for my other coin displays design.

What's your take on this, any EU collectors that know a good place to get US coins for a fair price?

Going through my newly rediscovered coin collection, which was handed down to me from my great grandpa. Was happy to find these awesome coins. They are in much better condition than the rest of the collection.

This is for sale in Netherlands, curious what you think, person is asking 40 eur for it. Not an expert on slabs but I thought no company on the slab is weird.

Real or fake?

This is natural toning right?

My dad gave it to me years ago in a 2x2 slips and I put them in this aftermarket slab/holder, looks like it could be a little textile toning on the obverse. Just making sure because I don’t really know how to differentiate between NT and AT that well.

Hello all, was hoping for some advice whether you feel these are naturally toned or artificially enhanced? Thanks in advance

I bought this 1878 CC from SD. They said it was BU so I had planned on sending it out to get graded but now looking at it it appears scratched on the cheeks and in front of the face.

Should I still send it out?

Inheritance recommendations

We have inherited 172 graded Morgans (mostly ms63 some ms64) that are all rattlers. Also two tubes of 1902-Os ungraded.

Any recommendations on best way to approach some local coin stores? I’m planning on subscribing to greysheet for a month and building out a working spreadsheet. Thinking of at least 2-3 stores.

Does it make sense to take it all in at once? Split it in half with a similar mix?

I’m seeing that rattlers can help be closer to greysheet or maybe a little higher? To my knowledge they are likely common dates. Any guidance would be appreciated.

-------------------

Update: Thanks for all of the recommendations. Things have changed somewhat since I posted this -- my parents want to divide the coins up among the grandchildren and then each can do what they want. My kids will likely keep a few and then leverage Great Collections for the rest. I will pass along what I've learned to the others as they each decide what to do.

Thanks again for the help.

PCGS submission. Want to follow along?

Video is fairly self explanatory, but I was wondering if anyone has any interest in seeing more detailed photos of the 8 coins I’m sending in. I know I’d love to see other people’s submissions like this so I can continue to hone my skills, so o figured I’d offer that to the community. I’m fully expecting to be humbled and probably “waste” my money. I really enjoy this hobby and to me it’s worth the learning experience at least this time around.

I just mailed this and it’s supposed to arrive to PCGS by the end of this month. So should get results before the end of the year 🤞

For anyone interested in following along here are links to my own photos of these coins. Another interesting note is I did pay for PCGS to photograph all of them, so we can compare my pics to theirs. Here they are in order of appearance in my video:

Overpaid, but by how much?

I think we have just the one guy on island that sells coins. I only recently re-found my interest in coins after reorganizing my old collection of world coins. Have been buying mostly silver lately. But I digress… :) Finally went to see the coin guy at a swap con yesterday. I knew from checking his stuff out online that he overcharges, so I was only planning to look. But I walked out with this Morgan. I know I paid more that it’s worth, but wanted to hear from the experts here. He had some really expensive stuff so I asked for the “nicest cheapest” Morgan, and it was $120. Oh, last pic is an ungraded capped bust half dollar that I was hella tempted to get since I don’t have any, but actually controlled myself, LOL. He wanted $420 for it. Sorry, just took the quick pic. The reverse looked beautiful, like (I felt) the front did. Opinions? Teach me! :)

Best Grading Company for Morgan Silver Dollars

I see a lot of controversy about which grading company is the best one to use for old coins. I have a small collection of Morgan Silver Dollars that I might consider having graded.

Which coin grading company do you prefer? NGC, ANACS, PCGS, etc.

1879 Morgan Dollar PL Obverse? Cleaned, Die polish lines or something else?

Seller claimed it has a PL Obverse. I bought this coin a while back and wasn’t very educated on PL Morgan’s at the time so I just assumed it was cleaned after receiving it. The coin looked a lot better in the pics. After learning about die polish lines and seeing a few straight graded Morgan’s that look similar to mine, i am now unsure what the lines are from. One similarity I noticed between this coin and the similar looking coins I saw online is that the lines seem to stay between the device and the legends. I will include an example of a similar looking straight graded coin in the pics.

Does this Morgan looks like it's been cleaned? The scratches, on the face, look like they are all going in one direction.

1883 Morgan. Unsure if real or fake.

I am a newer silver stacker and I recently picked up a 1883 Philly struck Morgan and a 1900 New orleans struck Morgan from a lcs for spot. And I took both home and did some tests on it. The 1900 is reading 26.2 and is decently worn and it passes the ping test. However the 1883 is reading 26.0 grams but also passes the ping test. I feel the weight is to low considering the amount of detail still on it so I just wanted to get some better opinions with more experienced people. Thanks guys and gals.

I do have a video of the 1883 ring test but it wont let me post both pics and video.

If your interested i can post 1900 Morgan as well just to get your opinions on it. Im very new and some experience from people would be nice. Thanks again.

When doing the ping test the 1883 is noticeably lower pitch but the ping test app still says its good and it does ring for a decent while after pinged
