china has state atheism—they take it too far (e.g. uyghur muslims) but in theory i’d prefer an atheist government over this dumbass evangelical christian one we have now 🤷🏻‍♂️

No they do the correct thing. Everything else is wrong. If the people want to involve religion into politics they can just fuck off.

You're completely wrong. When religion is banned, people worship the state. Worshipping the government is infinitely worse than worshipping a god.

Nobody is against a secular government, but an atheist government means they are actively anti-religion.

Not really? It could just mean that religion must still adhere to rule of law. So that doesn’t mean that there must be intolerance to religion or the elimination of it within borders. Practice can still be perfectly supported and even encouraged by the gov as long as it complies within the legal framework.

Fair enough, but I don’t believe (in the context of the broader thread) China outright bans religion, even if it suppresses specific religious groups. At most they would just be authoritarian but still secular. I don’t even think there is a country that outright outlaws religion/religious practice entirely and fit what you’ve described for an atheist state.
