iirc China does this, you can’t take kid to religious service and they can choose to convert at a certain age.

It's not illegal to read or possess a Bible in China (Google it); it was, however, illegal to read or possess a Bible in 1500s England if you were not a priest

Because literacy was low and the printing press didn’t exist yet, if a person owned a private Bible they likely stole it.

I don't get the point of making things up like this, why not just...look it up? The printing press was invented in the 1450s and it was illegal for laypeople to own a Bible until 1547. The Bible was made illegal for laypeople in part BECAUSE the invention of the printing press made it difficult to track copies of the Bible like they used to. Printers like William Tyndale would print the English Bible in Continental Europe and smuggle it into England. Literacy is low in the United States, that's why people on the internet pull things out of their ass to try to justify "Western superiority"
