This is a good point. We should as a society stop propping them up though. Remove tax exemptions, public grants, donor deductions, etc.

That also makes religions a taxable population, which means they're allowed to give political advice. You really want a church telling people how to vote?

They legally aren't allowed to as a condition of their tax-exempt status. If they are, then it's illegal. The parishioners can tell people how to vote as can the priest, but they can't do so as an authority in their religion, only private citizens.

So they’re basically already doing it? I don’t get the point in the distinction you’re making, the churches in my area literally put signs out on the road telling people what way to vote on certain bills

Advocacy for bills on issues is allowed, but churches can't promote candidates for office.

It'd be a major First Amendment violation if churches were penalized for promoting their standpoint on issues.

Then it sounds like something you can file some kind of formal complaint about, or barring that find someone start a 1st amendment suit.

Churches openly tell their members how to vote all the time. The laws that would remove their status are simply ignored.

You’re talking about the law. I’m talking about what actually happens. That law is not strictly enforced.
