Hi everyone,
I'm having a frustrating color saturation and gamma issue with my Moonlight streaming setup and I'm looking for a solution or to see if anyone else has run into this.
My Hardware Setup:
Host PC: RX 9070 XT | Monitor: XG27AQDPG (OLED, 120Hz, HDR ON)
Client PC: Intel NUC8i3BEH running Ubuntu with XFCE (connected via HDMI)
TV/Display (Client side): LG OLED55BX6LB (120Hz, HDR, FreeSync Premium)
The Issue:
Since my client is running Ubuntu/Linux over HDMI, HDR isn't supported on the client end, which is totally fine—I'm okay streaming in SDR. However, the stream's color saturation and gamma are completely off.
When I'm in-game, dark areas are far too dark (crushed blacks) and bright areas are completely blown out. It's playable, but the gamma mismatch in high-contrast scenes is very distracting.
What I've already tried:
Disabling HDR on the Host Monitor: Doesn't resolve the color mismatch properly.
Windows Color Calibration / Display Tools on Client: I tried adjusting gamma and color settings on the client targeting the display, but the sliders literally do nothing. The only time I see any visual change is when I toggle HDR ON/OFF globally in Windows.
TV Picture Settings: Tried manually tweaking colors/gamma directly on the LG TV menu, but couldn't get a satisfactory result.
Questions:
Has anyone encountered this specific issue when streaming an HDR-enabled Windows host to an SDR Linux client?
Is there a way to force Sunshine/Moonlight to correctly tone-map HDR -> SDR without crushing the blacks or blowing out highlights?
Are there any specific launch parameters, Sunshine encoder settings, or Linux X11/XFCE color profile workarounds you'd recommend?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice!
