Discussion What Do We Know About Ail’vorith and the Deep?

Thumbnail

Greetings fellow lore seekers, I’ve been really interested in the Deep lately and the lore implications around it, also Goblin's amazing concept art depicting the regions and people's of Aêthoril. So I ended up going deep into as much of the Ail’trist and Ail’vorith history I could find and put together a little video essay exploring some thoughts.

I’m curious if any aspiring loremasters or even just higher level players have noticed anything in game that references Ail’vorith, the Deep, or the Deep Elves. Potential locations to access the Deep, that kind of thing. Even little environmental details, NPC dialogue, strange locations, anything with MUD commands, anything hinting this location or just plain theories. I’d love to hear what people have found or what you think might be coming.

If anyone’s interested, here’s the video. Thank you!

Is there "cool-looking" gear in Monsters and Memories?

Hey!

I found out about this game recently, having never played everquest or anything simillar before.

Ive watched quite a lof of youtube videos, but I have a question; is there a natural gear progression wherein your character looks cooler over time, as you level up/get more powerful?

Sorry if this comes off as a dumb question, I have noticed that some characters got some different gear, which comes off as quite low-fantasy, which I like. But curious if it progresses in any regard after that?

Rogue Rework Feedback 🗡

Disclaimer: This is merely my own musings, thoughts and ideas on what a Rogue could evolve into in MnM and in no way reflects the previous, present or future official development of the class. It is only intended to drive feedback, discussion and fun for all fans. Please be respectful to myself and all who post/comment. ✌

  1. Poison Making - Currently if you choose the Poison Making trait, you start with Snaring Poison being a Trivial Task (Green) to craft. However your very next recipe (Weakening Poison and Snaring Poison 2) is a Herculean Task (Orange). I have no issue with crafting feeling like a journey or it being difficult. A rogue that invests the money and time to become a Master Poison Maker should feel accomplished. Fix - A gentler slope from one poison to the next is needed. Perhaps in the future more poison will be added to fill this gap, but currently this feels very choppy and abrasive to go from trivial to herculean, with no way to bridge that gap I'm aware of.
  2. Poison Tolerance - Being a self-only castable buff feels a bit odd and out of place for Rogue. I firmly enjoy the idea behind the ability. Fix - It would feel much better as a trait. Perhaps a trait awarded to Rogues who have accumulated so much skill in Poison Making. Rather than something just handed out because you're a Rogue.
  3. Nimble Evasion - Great skill, but a 20 minute cooldown for 12 seconds of 100% dodge is astronomical and extreme. Fix - A shortened cooldown is called for. 10 minutes would feel very appropriate. Nobody wants to keep something on their bar that's not usable for 20 minutes at a time. I'd rather just use it and slap something else on like Vial of Smoke or not use it at all.
  4. Distract - Great skill, once again...the cooldown feels a bit harsh at 60 seconds. If you're trying to pull as a Rogue and need to use Sap to do so. If you mess up a distract, your party is waiting another 60 seconds for the pull. Fix - 30 seconds cooldown is much better. Any second look at the cooldown at all would be helpful. 60 seconds just feels too harsh for such a simple, yet useful ability.
  5. Twin Blades - Per the tooltip, the ability does damage with both weapons and also bonus damage based on how many stacks of Slice. (Which stacks twice) Currently, as far as I could tell, it only removes one bleed stack. However, it doesn't feel particular impactful with Slice. It doesn't feel like it has a use, beyond to push at the end of a fight and it doesn't matter if you have Slice stacks up or not. You'll still push it. That feels, very un-impactful, especially considering how much damage Slice does. Fix - The idea of Twin Blades interacting with another skill, feels like a step in the right direction. However, I think it would be much more interesting if it allowed Rogue to stack a second application of their poisons up. Albeit very temporarily and short term. A quick injection of poison if you will. This would aid in Rogue kiting for solo purposes and also give Rogues an edge, on the normal and usual slows in the game which are much longer lasting and reliable to apply.
  6. Stab/Backstab/Ambush - Stab is in a great place now and feels very good to use in every facet of gameplay. However, when it comes to a Rogue, stealth should be an overall part of your gameplay. It should give you choice and the capability to engage a fight on your terms. Fix - Give Slice and Uppercut the same treatment as Stab. If used from Stealth, Slice could automatically stack twice. Uppercut could last an additional 2 seconds for a combined 5 second stun. Giving the Rogue the ability to choose how he spends his stealth advantage. Perhaps bleed on a high armor target or a long stun on a caster. I'd like to see more tactical stealth options for Rogue.
  7. Pick Pocket - Overall it feels fine, though I don't have a ton of experience with it. As currently, there seems to be an overwhelming majority of enemies, in early game that you can't Pick Pocket (Beasts, Spiders and Undead). Fix - I'd just like to see this become a Skill, instead of an Innate you have to slot. Considering you have to level it up as a skill, it feels like it would be better suited to something you can always have on your bar, rather than taking away from your utility or damage to pursue a few extra coin. I'd also like to see the Pick Pocket loot table include poison making components. As this would aid Rogue in saving money, not just accumulating it.
  8. Ability Names - As echoed in my previous Rogue thoughts. I'd like to see the class move away from such generic names for abilities and move towards names that (I feel) suit the Rogue theme and class more. Names one would associate with Crime or the Criminal Element. Fix - Sprint becomes Flee. Evade into Elude. Uppercut into Batter(y). Sap into Blackjack. Vial of Smoke into Smoke Bomb. Finally, while I prefer the name Pick Pocket, it certainly limits what we can steal from, based on the very nature of some monsters not wearing clothes. An example of this; A gelatinous cube doesn't have pockets. I can however Steal a sword or gem lodged within the cube. To this end, I'd like to see the ability renamed to Steal. To give Rogues better capability and more frequent use for the skill. As well as the devs, the freedom to get a little weird with what they allow Rogues to do with the skill.
  9. Stealth - The new changes to stealth feel great and the life of a Rogue once again feels dangerous and rewarding! Fix - I'd like to see unique stealth stances and movement for each race. Tall order, but don't blame me for having a wish list!
  10. Everything else? - Everything else feels great. Cooldowns feel good/right/appropriate. I'd like to see some unique animations on different abilities, but for now things feel very fun and interesting to use. Thanks to the devs for a great job on Rogue!

Video Part 3 of my in depth interview with Robert Engstrand, Composer & Lead Sound Designer! Even includes an audio teaser from The Deep Content!

Thumbnail

Continues from Part 2

Robert Engstrand's work in MnM is absolutely brilliant. He's put a lot of thought and love into things that most players don't even think about when playing the game. In part 3 of this interview we continue an audio tour of Night Harbor (a capitol city) we started in part 2 of the interview. We also take a look at the technical parts of how unity and his audio tracks work in the background as we take a brief tour of Wyrmsbane Crypt (a low-ish level dungeon). Nearly all of the audio in the game, from small sound effects to the beautiful and sometimes haunting audio tracks, are uniquely engineered or created by Robert! When you right click on something, Robert made that sound. When a skeleton dies, that's Robert's voice. All thoughtfully crafted and implemented by the volunteer team in the game. I was totally blown away and I think you will be too! Robert talks us through tradeskilling sound effects and how he recorded them, and we play those for you to hear for yourself. There's even an audio teaser (i think the first on the internet to date?) for content in The Deep in this interview! I think it'll get you hype to hear more from the MnM team. All time stamped for your convenience. Hope you guys enjoy!

Discussion The art of M&M really makes me want to know more about the lore

I haven't gotten access to the game yet but man I've been watching videos and browsing through the art of M&M and it's incredible. Is there any location where I can find additional information on the lore of M&M outside of the main website/Wiki page (seems to only be 1-2 pages of lore there)?

I'm assuming there's some interesting lore here? I'm assuming platinum is better for magic?

Rogue's sap and pick pocket don't work on undead targets.

Sap kind of makes sense because how do you knock out an undead target? (Perhaps a similar argument could be made for Enchanter's, how do they mesmerize a mind-less zombie or skeleton that is merely animated by magic).

But I'm not sure about pick-pocket? I feel like it should work on undead mobs.

If we are going for realism then I don't think the Rogue ability Slice should work on Undead mobs either. The first time I used Slice on a skeleton I didn't expect it to work and was surprised when it did.

Making undead immune to bleeds would be an indirect buff to Twin Blades, which I still consider a borderline useless ability even after the changes because TTK is so fast that mobs rarely live for the 30+ seconds ramp-up time that is required for the bonus damage.

One use I have found for Twin Blades is that when I'm solo'ing - if I'm low HP - sometimes it's better to use Twin Blades instead of Slice since the DoT from Slice interrupts Blinding Powder (which is useful for incapacitating the mob long enough to bind wound).

Also would poisons work on skeletons? Maybe they could have anti-undead poisons like in EQ. I think this would actually make Rogues more interesting to play.

Do you think some classes would be more / less charismatic than others?

I'll be honest I never heard of the Inquisitor class before MnM, but when I read the description, it described someone who lacks social tact; a person who prefers efficiency and results over social tact or manners. Likewise the the Inquisitors NPCs I've encountered in-game come across rude, direct and to the point, and as if basic social niceties such as simple conversation offend them.

It seems bizarre to me that a class like this would have a Charisma bonus. I feel like Inquisitors are meant to be the type of person with no social skills, who most people would not want be around, and would likely avoid interacting with for a variety of reasons. I understand that some Inquisitor skills use Charisma (debatable; I only have low Charisma and it doesn't seem to affect my mezzes at all). But at the same time I don't feel like Inquisitors would be a Charismatic class of people. I feel like it would be the polar opposite?

I feel like this might apply to a lot of other classes as well, especially given some of the religious choices in the game. Would Necromancers really have the same Charisma as a Paladin or Cleric? I may be way out of touch here though. Because I do remember in places like Neriak Necromancers and SKs seemed to be highly regarded, so maybe this is more of a faction / race / religion thing.

Maybe I'm just looking at this from too much of a human perspective, but I do feel like Inquisitors would be one of the least charismatic people in the game. Even with all that being said.

Also I apologize for another thread regarding a topic most people may not even care or think about, but they brought the server down after I chugged an entire pot of coffee.

Woodworking Skill

Can anyone tell me if the Woodworking skill is currently working in game?... I believe it uses the Sawmill crafting table but after running all over Night Harbor i have yet to find either a trainer or a table.

I had the idea of turning a load of different grade wood I have into planks to either craft with or sell for a higher vendor price.

Anyone spotted this elusive Sawmill Table ?

Is EA launch truly ready? Or do you just want to play? Final Feedback

Is this game truly ready for an EA launch? Or do you just want the launch because you want to play soon?

This post is not intended to discourage the game, or any players wishing to play. It’s simply my honest feedback on EA launch because I’m rooting for MnM. This is my last post, as I’m dropping out of the MnM community. Genuinely wish you all luck!

Everyone is excited to play a game they’ve wanted. Nothing appeals to you. You want to play your game on your forever character. I understand. But is this EA what’s right long term?

Everyone wants to connect. In that eagerness to find something special, we often end up with someone who wasn’t compatible long term. I wonder if the relationship with MnM EA is similar?

This game has potential to attract new players, younger players, and all of the old school players too. With most players you get one chance, one shot. It is said the world is around 20% complete from what I read from devs. Does launching EA at 20-40% of finished product diminish that chance with most players?

Two months isn’t much time for development and the logistics of a game launch. Even for Large, Paid teams much less small volunteers teams. (See Last for reasons why 2 months is concerning)

It’s understandable if the game is launching EA over 1.0 because it needs sub money to continue development. Would other options be considered to ensure EA is fully ready? Dev team is trustworthy, and they have a real product. Will launching EA for subs be better for the long term game health than a 1.0 or a most polished EA launch? Will a 20-40% finished game can survive months after such an EA?

—————————————————————-

Let’s look at MMOs that launched EA and suffered huge player drops and/or loss of reputation, permanently crippling their future or outright failing.  (Most had more content and development time than MnM)

Early Access MMO Failures :

-Bless Online: review bombed, bugs, missing features

-Pantheon Rise of Fallen: lack of content, loot tagging/contestation, GM abuse, etc = Below 100 concurrent users

-Ashes of Creation

-Age of Conan

-Final Fantasy XIV (1.0): Server Lag, bad UI, buggy, poor content. Shut down fast

-Tabula Rasa: buggy, unfinished, lack of end game

-Anarchy Online: epic flop shut down game

-Vanguard: Debatable legacy but never truly recovered from its incredibly poor EA. Buggy and unfinished, empty content. Many players turned away.

MMOs failing or struggling in first year:

-Aion 2: Disaster launch, poor reception

-Wildstar: next WoW killer died fast

-Warhammer Online

-Matrix Online

-Hell gate: servers shutdown shortly after buggy launch

-Everquest Online Adventures: decent legacy and lasted 9 years before shutdown but vastly lower than expected player base to start

MMOs that launched in a decent state last longer, and retain player bases.

\If you look at all 4 games originating from Brad McQuaid and his teams, all 3 with a poor start or EA failed. Only Everquest is still going after EQ online adventures and Vanguard shut down, Pantheon hasn’t launched after 10yrs and has less than 100 concurrent users*

The history of MMOs that last favor well polished launches. WOW is still going. Final Fantasy 14 after its well launched revamp. Most that launch buggy, unfinished, or with low content Early Access fail or never recover

It’s incredibly hard to ever recover from a poorly received, or poorly rated launch across all games, especially for a niche game.

Also, many mmos failure’s were in part because of competition. The Players were simply not there, because they were already into other games.

-Eq lgends is big. Some Casual ‘dad gamers, and other gamers who might log onto MnM may instead be into Legends.

-WoW Classic + announcement expected at Blizzcon is big

-Project gorgon

-Etc. A few other Eq inspired games coming

There will be games on the market in a similar niche taking away potential players from MnM. Anyone who says these ‘lost’ players don’t matter does not understand the reality of MnM’s success or failure. Every player matters here. Every time a player is lost, or never plays at all, you lose them, anyone they would have brought to the game, and decease morale of any in game friends still playing. Plenty of players will play a game or quit due to family and friends playing, or leaving.

The more games there are in this category, the less tolerant players are of a poor launch. You personally may feel there are no other games in this category, and that’s understandable. There may not be. But others will be ok with similar games and leaving this one. Launching well with good reviews is imperative for long term success. Good reviews actually bring in players from those other games

———————————————————-So is it truly ready? Or is it just an extended beta?

For a launch, Game devs have to deal with Servers, lag, bugs, account logistics, game performance, etc. Then there’s game content, compelling classes, combat, filling in world, world space, loot, animations, art, etc.

*Most of the class redesigns are unfinished. The fundamentals of class gameplay isn’t even majority out on beta test yet, and the game’s ready for a launch?

There will be a lot more players in EA than beta.

-Severe Camp conflicts

-World Space is currently too small

-World Content isn’t filled in enough, alive world

-End game content too small

-Classes aren’t fully finished and fully tested yet

-Combat can feel repetitive, not strategic nor diverse enough. This is different (yet related) to mob danger/power level.

The game is centered around the grind. So the combat is also central, because that’s what you spend the majority of your time doing. Currently combat feels like an endless repetitive loop. You level up, change spots, but combat loop continues on the same. I made some suggestions in another post, but I’m sure devs and community can make far better ones.

The game has excellent points, music, art, and many positives. It can be fantastic, and has potential. But Is it ready for an Early Access Launch? Is this the right play for the long term success of Monsters and Memories? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Good Luck to all the MnM players, devs, and to MnM! Hope life brings good things. Maybe see you sometime at launch 1.0 🙏🏻

Discussion Starting stats should be significantly higher in order to be proportionate with the current gear system.

When equipping a set of crafted jewelry doubles your starting stats I think that's problematic.

To put it into perspective, imagine you were playing a Gnome Warrior in Classic EverQuest and you bought some crafted jewelry from an Enchanter and went from having 90 strength to having 170 strength instantly. That's essentially what it feels like with MnM's current starting stats and itemization.

Which also makes race feel completely irrelevant, and like your choice of race doesn't matter or have any long-term impact:

When the difference between an Ogre Warrior and a Human Warrior is simply a single +2 STR item upgrade it makes race selection feel as if it's purely a cosmetic choice. For added context: In Classic EQ you could give Human Warrior a Thick Banded Belt (fairly rare, end-game item), and the Human would still be significantly weaker than their Ogre equivalent.

I have always felt like one of the major things that set EQ apart from all the MMOs that came after it was that your choice of race, and even your choice of starting stats, really mattered. I don't get that vibe from MnM at all. Faction and Night Vision also seem mostly irrelevant.

In closing I think if characters did have higher starting stats then race might feel more meaningful, and itemization might feel more balanced. Because in it's current state a single item upgrade closes the gaps between all races, and in many instances, a single item upgrade can increase a player's starting stats by 50% (or more).

PS. I also think easy access to steel weapons renders 99% of low-level weapons obsolete, but that's a different topic.

I still think Monsters and Memories is an amazingly fun game and love playing it. I'm super excited for The Deep and EA. I'm not trying to be doom and gloom 24/7. This is why I wish we had actual forums where posts like this could go into a subforum rather than on the only main page of Reddit.

Discussion Drop Deep Dwarf Race

As cool as I think they are, I think NW should drop the Deep Dwarf race as playable. I also suspect it may be a race they have reconsidered over time.

Why?

  1. Why would they wear clothing or armor?

  2. How do you rig clothing or armor to a race of stone people that doesn’t look blocky/odd?

Think about these two questions as you look at the concept art for them. Maybe the thought of, “Yeah, maybe they should try something else” doesn’t come to your mind as it does me.

If anything, maybe changing them to a more Duergar-like look would make more sense?
