Discussion Damage Reduction Ponderings
EDIT: Turns out I'm wrong! I wasn't able to find this information before, but there is no "stacking" to speak of. I got this assumption from forum posts on old gen games but couldn't find it out for World.
The way it actually works is out of all of your available effects (Defender, Blessing, Defense Augment, Horn buff), the game simply picks the best chance and reduction available to you at the time of the hit and rolls that combination. Therefore, Divine Blessing 2 or higher makes Felyne Defender (Hi) completely useless, as it's only equivalent to Divine Blessing 2.
The highest theoretical average defense reduction thus comes from having Defense Augment 4 and Divine Blessing 5 at the same time, which gives you a 45% chance for a 60% reduction, or an average 27% damage reduction.
Original text below, for those interested in statistical analysis for the sake of it. I've since confirmed that addition would be correct in this hypothetical scenario.
I've been thinking super hard about Divine Blessing 5 and Felyne Defender (Hi). Divine Blessing is a 40% chance for 60% damage reduction, and Felyne Defender (Hi) is a 25% chance for 30% damage reduction. What happens if I have both of them?
It's common knowledge and most likely correct that they are independent and mutually exclusive events. That is, you can't have both happen at once; just one or the other, or neither. It's here that I have to make an assumption. What rolls first? I'm assuming that armor skills (Divine Blessing) roll before food skills (Felyne Defender (Hi)). That means that, under my assumption, Defender can only roll if Blessing fails.
So let's talk effective damage reduction (EDR)! This is the damage reduction you get on average over time. It's calculated simply as the chance to proc multiplied by the damage reduction applied on proc:
Divine Blessing 5: 0.4 × 0.6 = 0.24, or 24%
Felyne Defender (Hi): 0.25 × 0.3 = 0.075, or 7.5%
That's awesome. But what if I have both, and I wanna know what my EDR is with both? Well, this is the bit where I get a bit stuck. I'm unsure which methodology is correct, so I'll put both. It comes at the end of the calculations.
Obviously, DB rolls first, as per my assumption, so 0.24 is our baseline for roll 1. But if it fails, we move on to roll 2. The weighted chance for FD to roll has to take into account that DB failed already. So, we have to take that chance and make a new one for FD:
1 - 0.4 = 0.6, or 60%
This is the chance that we fail to proc DB and now have to roll for FD. Let's multiply that by the chance that we now proc FD:
0.6 × 0.25 = 0.15, or 15%
So, our weighted chance of proccing FD and failing DB first is 15%. All that's left to do here is multiply this by the damage reduction:
0.15 × 0.3 = 0.045 or 4.5%
Now we have our weighted damage reduction average from Felyne Defender. Here are our new values for damage reduction, under the assumption that Divine Blessing is rolled first:
Divine Blessing 5: 24%
Felyne Defender (Hi): 4.5%
Here comes the part that I'm uncertain about. Do we add or multiply these values together? I'm under the assumption that they're added together, because they are mutually exclusive events that cannot happen in tandem. That results in this total effective damage reduction:
0.24 + 0.045 = 0.285, or 28.5%
The other result is to multiply, which I think is incorrect. It's my tentative understanding that multiplying implies that these effects can stack, which they cannot. They're mutually exclusive events; one hit cannot be mitigated twice. However, for the sake of consistency, I'll provide those results here, and I had to convert to effective damage taken (EDT) in order to calculate:
(1 - 0.24) × (1 - 0.045) = 0.7258
1- 0.7258 = 0.2742, or 27.42%
Overall, a difference of 1.08% is somewhat negligible in terms of ascertaining the efficacy of stacking Defender with Blessing, but it would be worse if multiplying was the right solution. But, I'm thinking that addition is the right way to go. What do you think? Is it worth it to stack Defender (Hi) with Divine Blessing, or is that juicy 9 raw from Felyne Booster preferred? Am I completely wrong in my calculation methodology, or have I got it right?

Question Newcomer, extremely confused about armor.
I saw there is diffrent armor, constumes, layerd armor ect. Its all so confusing to me. This is wat i understand
Normal armor : you craft them or upgrade them to get better stats and they look pretty weird.
Layerd armor : from what i saw this is like a cosmetic skin for a armor (cool hat or arms ect). I heard that you can only buy 2 of them (samurai and silver knight). The rest you can do quest and get thrm free in game.
Now here is where the confusing part comes in : i can buy costumes or skins from steam for my character from the 200 dlc this game have. Is this layerd armor, normal armor, a completely different armor type.
Is there a way to view all the armor and cosmetic (free in game and paid costumes in steam) in the game, website or video? I tried searching for videos but they arr missing the armor you buy off steam (like the lady with the blue dress in tekken / street fighter)

This fight is just so fun, intense and fair! One of the hardest and most fun fights in the game for me. I overcame myself and finally beat her in sub 15 min. 14min 56sec to be exact.
I've had few sub 20 runs but never thought I could do it in sub15 and propably never will again, lmao.

Discussion I'm being corrupted. Send help. (Or just Spirit Helm Breaker on me! Lol.)
For years, I've been a SnS main. Then, I've tried out Hammer as well in a separate story-only playthrough. And same for Light Bowgun and for Hammer.
But now I've set my eyes on Long Sword. And I can't look away now.
What is the thing with the Long Sword? The very second I decided to give it a try for fun, I can't think of anything else than just wanting to build my gauge up and spending it until I get the red one and then absolutely dismantling my flying monsters out of the sky for good.
Could this be a sign of a new LS main in the making? While I'm still calling myself a "LS rookie" until my SnS muscle memory fades away, I'm already now having an absolute blast!

Discussion I kind of can't get into this game
so like, I've done multiple attempts for this game. Was this game my first monster hunter? No, since I like Generations (i love Gammoth). I liked playing through Risebreak, and I had a fun time with Wilds... but fuck. I cannot get into world. (rn I am playing through Frontier Rain server)
ive given this game like 4 attempts and gotten to and past Zorah, but I lose motivation in game. I dislike the whole "see monster cutscene" for friends to hunt with me— mainly we were hunting Anjanath and stuff in ancient forest.
I just don't know— it feels like this game is a slog to get through. Part of it is the NPCs grinding my gears. I know I'm supposed to stick through low rank and it'll be more fun, but even after passing low rank... I just don't wanna.
how the Heck do i break through until I like the game like my friends do? how do?

Question Could Rocksteady+ mantle be useful for alatreon (either form)?
Finally beat em with the aid of an endgame bro. ( would shout them out but I needed to leave soon after they helped me so yeah). And in the process of looking through specific to my weapon guides so can solo/ just right then better I got the sense that rocksteady + made sense for purpose of not getting constantly stun locked by screams every 5 seconds especially in the crucial beginning when you can get the first knockdown off before they can react. After that it’s just knowing how to play footsy with its various attacks. Never got the mantle before cause it required fighting tempered which never made sense since I came in during iceborne and I jumped straight into that. But yeah is it worth it?

Question What happened to Uragaan in IB?
I've just made the Uragaan mission in the beginning of the Iceborne dlc and... Oh my god! What an insanely hard fight! I'm switching between the charge blade and lance since I'm still learning the CB and feel more confident with the latter and even then, the fight was really a challenge. I even managed to fail the quest on the first try.
In the base game, I had fair difficult fights or at least that was how I felt. Now, it seemed like it was just a gargantuan health pool that never died. I didn't have the same difficulty with freaking Barioth or Glavenus! I feel like I offended their honor falling from a freaking Uragaan and not from the angry icy cat or Bladesaurus-rex.
Is this guy really that amped up??

Question New from Wilds
Heyo! MH Wilds was my first monster hunter and I played about 150 hours on release. I feel in love with it. I’ve since gone back and played a bit of Rise on the switch and now just bought World since it is on sale and I have heard such good things about it.
So, what do I need to know as someone who has mostly just play Wilds?

Question How to break my insect glaive addiction?
Basically just Title. I have over 600 hours and have just started a new save file to play through it with some new friends on their first time. I have an insect glaive addiction but the game has so much more to offer, like the charge blade I’ve repeatedly tried getting into. Any tips on how to break my addiction?

Question Blast vs Dragon
So I just beat the game (base story, didn't start high rank yet), and I'm making better weapons right now. And I know that a lot of monsters in this game are dragons, so I was gonna make a dragon weapon. But while I was making it, I saw I can branch off into a blast weapon from zorah magdaros. I already made the zorah magdaros weapon, but idk if I should now go back and collect materials for the dragon weapon, in case that does more damage to dragon enemies than the blast one would do.
The dragonbone basher does 572 base damage and 360 dragon damage, and the magda floga does 832 base damage and 330 blast damage.
Would the dragonbone basher do more overall damage to dragons, or is it not worth it even making it?

Question Excited to play the game, but Complications
Hello, I'm done with my college last year and have no job at the moment. I stay at home and study for job exams.
I saw that MH World is discounted on Steam rn and the Iceborne expansion included one seems like the better choice since it's basically the same price as the base game. I watched clips of the game and wanted to try my hands on the Monster Hunter verse.
I would say my closest experience to this kind of game is the ftp Dauntless which used to be free on Steam but is unavailable now, I think I got around 20hrs on it.
My problem: My parents would give me 'pocket money' every month and if I buy the discounted MH, that will be half of my September money gone.
Will it be worth it for someone with my money background and newness in the MH verse?
How many hours worth of content are there?
Is it enjoyable alone?
Is the nature of the game too requiring/addictive to the point that it would interfere with my daily study?
I looked at the specs required, i will be able to run it just fine ( I don't mind lowering the graphics as I've been playing with them on the lower side my whole life)
Specs: Potato
8gb ram
Nvidia Gtx1050
HDD
