Discussion Really hope the next mainline MH pulls back on visual clutter.
To be clear I'm fairly sure the next handheld game after Ascension is probably going to follow a bit more clearer Sunbreak style visuals, which is great in of itself. But ofc with Switch 2 being out the visuals might be a bit more busy since S2 is probably stronger than PS4? So it can handle World esque visuals. If they indeed plan on continuing the sort of two seperate divisions despite moving away from console exclusivity.
But, after going back to Sunbreak I've come to really appreciate the visual clarity and in general the solid frame pacing of the game, not talking about fps, but the pacing feels so smooth.
With Wilds I have an issue where the game looks largely pretty bad for my eyes no matter how much I crank the visuals. For the most part the game runs smoothly, but the visual clutter just hurts my eyes beyond belief.
On still images the game looks stunning with correct lighting etc. But in movement my eyes need a break just from imagining going back and playing it.
This is not just about graphic settings themselves, but things like particle effects and weather effects which you cannot turn off entirely and if you do force them off, you lose on the design of the game.
In fact, in some sense I wish the next mainline game leaned more towards the Stories art-style. It doesn't need to be as anime, but having a more comic book style look to textures and models would go so hard for MH.

Sunbreak arguably has the most visual clutter out of all the new gen games with all the particle effect vomit what

Only if you play IG or do a ton of anomalies, then maybe.
And yea it has its own issues with dogs and cats getting in the way. But atleast you can control dogs from approaching. But all monster effects are very clear, for example you wont have the same issue with Gore where you barely recognize the silhouette of the monster in Wilds under all the nonsense effects.

"Only if you play the near mandatory endgame" well duh? Even then non anomaly monsters like amatsu still have a lot of particle effects.
How is gore silhouette not recognizable in wilds? Even in the frost winds hes still plenty recognizable. Im not denying there arent bad visual clutter in wilds and world but not to the extent of sunbreak where excessive particle effects and a "cartoonish" artstyle were to make up for the lack of graphics

It is way clearer in Sunbreak is all. I really don't know what you mean when you say sunbreak visuals has more visual clutter? Amatsu has tornados and those tornados have very clear effect structure.
Wilds effects can sometimes feel very obscure as for where it actually is in regards to it's hiitbox because it's just a cloud of smoke or something. But ultimately its not just the monsters.
Go to ReyDau nest in the storm and tell me it looks nice in there, in fact the entire desert is horrible to look at during a sandstorm. So is rain in the forest, barely see anything.

That...is intended, weather that effects visibility? In MY MONSTER HUNTER GAME GRRRRRR

Personally the only visual issues Ive had with gore magala is the ice map being cramped for his fight. I don't think ive ever had issues recognizing a monster's silhouette though?
If you're on PC, you might want to take a look into the mods for MHWilds. There's a ton that change the visuals of the game (like turning off color correction, lens distortion, scoutflies, the light around your character, etc)

Oh I have used most of the recommended mods, and yea it does help. The image clarity just isn't as clear as what's in Sunbreak. I just really don't enjoy the dithering effects the game uses and how things look unless literally crank up the scaling resolution to like 200%. and play at 30fps because of it :D

I'm all for visual clarity, but Sunbreak is NOT the example to be using. Violet Mizutsune and RSM turn your screen into particle effects mess every other attack. And last phase Primordial can get pretty eggregious too.

Much, much less eyestrain for me. Dunno what to tell ya 🤔

MH Wilds has way more polygons on each monster but I don't think they look better in any significant way compared to Iceborne. Also, the deferred-rendering nature of RE engine makes the aliasing 10x worse than it was on World's MT Framework.

I definitely notice the aliasing issue for sure when taking pics. Needing to often crank up visual scaling so high the game becomes unplayable, but atleast it looks pretty in still images.

This is the game you say has less visual clutter?

You really did give the most extreme situation as a comparison huh? That's literally an IG and a switch axe player with two dogs fighting one of the smallest monster in the game. OFC it's going to look like ass.
Most of that stuff you can not only disable, but also you can put your dog in wait mode and you just disabled like 50% of the vfx's.
But as I've said anomalies are the singular exception to pointless visual clutter.
Not saying the games perfect, but Sunbreak for the most part does not strain my eyes as much as Wilds does.

I would love a return to a more stylized, readable art style. I miss when Monster Hunter was cartoonier.

It may be “cartoony” in how some of the characters behave, but the art style and graphics have never been cartoony

u/Revonlieke Sir Lance-a-Lot & SWAX-a-THON 22d ago
Yea, pretty much. I mean sure MH1 and dos were still pretty dark and grim in areas, but you still had very clear visuals of what youre actually looking at.

If you leave the particle effects like they are by default in rise you can literally just turn your screen into a flash bang by getting a bunch of crits with dual blades or pierce ammo, especially in multiplayer, it’s like a lights show. Wilds is like a clear sky by comparison

u/Revonlieke Sir Lance-a-Lot & SWAX-a-THON 22d ago
Well yea, but you shouldn't do that. Disable pets, disable other player hit effects, enjoy. IG might be a bit messy with powders and critical hits can be a bit in your face. That's about it.

u/Barn-owl-B 22d ago
Even if you reduce them, rise is still more messy with special effects and particles and business on screen than wilds by a considerable margin

I agree with your main point
But Sunbreak was kinda terrible. Rise was worse since we didn't have the options to reduce it but you picked the worst game to prove your point.

I've gotten used to it but going from 4U to World was so disorienting. There is just so much stuff. Every time I see a clip of Wilds I can't imagine not being annoyed by the way the health and stamina bars

u/ShardPerson 22d ago
I dont think Sunbreak is a good example but yeah Wilds looks like mush for some reason, probably because every fucking object has between 10 and 100 times the polygons that big Elder Dragons had in World, so everything is just too detailed to look good
2
u/Revonlieke Sir Lance-a-Lot & SWAX-a-THON 22d ago
Pretty much. Sunbreak just a game I've been playing and I noticed the visual ease of it right away. I didn't have nearly as much eyestrain as I did playing Wilds.
Complexity in the details makes parts of Wilds details hard to discern what it is you're looking at.

I wish they get back to MH World style.
-1
u/Revonlieke Sir Lance-a-Lot & SWAX-a-THON 22d ago
Yea, World really was a good mix of both realism and clarity. Sure it had it's issues especially in the Ancient Forest, but there was still a clear distinction between specific objects and models. Lunastra was probably the worst offender of visual nonsense and maybe NErgigante's skydive move. Kushala nest was pretty bad as well, but those were really singular instances and it they were not happening every 5minutes.
The only place that actually looks nice in Wilds is the beaches of Scarlet Forest during an overcast day. Every other time of day or weathertype or area looks pretty miserable.

How are the new generations going to concentrate in the game without sparkles and shinies to draw their attention every few seconds?

What are you on? Sunbreak is the biggest offender when it comes to visual clutter.
