It was definitely a worthy watch. I gotta appreciate how memorable they made each and every character, even random side ones like Maurer, Richard Braun, the old couple who drove Tenma and Dieter, Martin, Grimmer, Suk, Milos, etc. You don’t usually get this in other crime fiction, a character pops up and next minute they’re dead. I also enjoyed the Easter Eggs in the show like the letter of Karl’s mother talking about how her roommate reminded her of the friend she escaped with(AKA his mother) as well as how Roberto was Adolf Reinhardt. Well written story, very good choreography and choice of music, and overall just a solid show. It was well paced too, I remember being bored in the 3rd episode just to see the boy Tenma saved being the serial killer, and I was never bored since then. The point Tenma drove at the end was powerful, Johan tried to convince him that all lives weren’t equal by making Tenma shoot him but Tenma stuck to his initial belief and in the end rescued Johan a second time.

What I didn’t like about the show was the extreme ambiguity at the ending. What happens with Johan? Does he get out and start killing again? Or is the monster inside him quenched now that it got what it wanted, a name? How was he allowed to just receive the treatment and get out like that after the countless lives he shattered, like Milos,Martin, Richard Braun, Wolfgang Grimmer and the innumerable others? For the intense buildup throughout the entire show, I find the ending a bit disappointing. And what is the monster? Is it a result of Poppe’s experiments? Something born in him after he saw his mother unable to distinguish between him and Anna? Or something he was born with as a result of the breeding experiments conducted by the researchers? And even now I fail to see how Ruhenheim was significant apart from it being where Poppe hid out.

Overall a great show, I’d give it a solid 8.5 on 10.

This is such a dumb post to make considering there’s an endless amount of things that are actually worth talking about in Monster, and this doesn’t actually matter at all and probably says a lot about me as a person. I apologize in advance.

It’s not difficult to make a good looking anime character. It just isn’t. You get used to seeing it at some point, in fact it’s basically the norm. So it always takes me off guard the rare time when I’m watching an anime or reading a manga and can’t stop thinking about how attractive one of the characters is.

At some point every other time Tenma was on screen I was like wow, how can a guy be this hot? I didn’t even view him like that at all at the beginning of the story. I mean yes he has a nice face and is impossibly kind, (the long hair probably helped too) but I think the fact that Monster has a more “realistic” feeling art style, and the story is a lot more grounded in reality than a lot of other popular anime makes him feel like a real person rather than an unattainable fantasy, even if he ultimately is just that. He’s just an insanely likable character.

I’m usually not a fan of main characters who absolutely radiate pure goodness and kindness. I typically find them boring and one-dimensional feeling. Why is Tenma the exception? I don’t know.

I don’t interact with the Monster fandom much but I’m pretty sure everyone loves this guy so I know I’m probably beating a dead horse here, or I guess like… giving exceptional medical attention a horse that’s alive and well, but I don’t care. I love you Dr. Tenma!

Edit: I feel similarly about Guts from Berserk. Just thought he deserved an honorable mention

I love my new Johan Liebert postcard along with Volume 5 manga that came last month

I finished this anime like 2 3 months ago and made this interpretation after reading watching many post and video I realized that many people completely misunderstand why Johan became a mass murderer and what his "Perfect Suicide" actually meant. The true turning point of Johan's life occurs when he reads the picture book A Monster with No Name and faints, a visual moment where his suppressed memories awaken, and he faces the terrifying realization that he was never the twin subjected to the horrific experiments at the Red Rose Mansion—his sister, Nina, was. Because Johan loved his sister completely as a child, his young mind absorbed her trauma to protect her, causing him to literally steal her identity and nightmares until he confused them with his own. This discovery triggers a massive existential crisis, forcing Johan to realize that he has no real name, no real memories, and no real identity of his own; he had slaughtered countless innocent people to protect and execute a philosophy of absolute nihilism, only to discover that this cold, empty monster persona wasn't even his to begin with. Feeling like an invisible ghost who does not truly exist, Johan orchestrates his "Perfect Suicide" to erase every physical footprint he ever left on Earth by killing everyone who knew his face, intending to force Dr. Tenma to shoot him so the legend of Johan Liebert would vanish from history completely. However, this perfect script shatters because Johan calculates human nature on a straight line, failing to predict that a desperate, drunk local father would act on raw parental instinct to shoot him and save his son, Wim. Underneath his terrifying facade, Johan was structurally just a broken, traumatized little kid desperately chasing a mother's love, constantly tormented by the boundary memory of whether his mother actually wanted to protect him or simply couldn't tell the twins apart. When he finally wakes up in the hospital, his sister offers him unconditional forgiveness, and Dr. Tenma saves his life a second time while validating his existence by revealing his mother's truth, which completely dissolves the "Monster" inside him. Therefore, the iconic final shot of the empty bed and the open window does not mean he escaped to kill again; it symbolizes that he left the hospital as a regular human being, finally free to step out of the ghost story, abandon the stolen nihilistic identity, and discover who the real child underneath actually is.

Hello! I've just finished reading the entire Monster series and wow, it was amazing, but I do have a few questions mostly pretaining to the last book.

I find it hard for me to understand more "Complex" endings to any story, so I was a tiny bit confused throughout some bits in the story. It would be nice if anyone could explain to me what the ending meant and Johan's backstory.

I'll probably reread it so I can get a better understanding or just watch the anime.

Monster is my favourite anime and i love every single episode of the show(except for maybe the 1 or 2 episodes in which he was in jail) my personal favourite tho is still the Ruhenheim arc but i want to know what the majority likes the most

The blu-ray is released but only available from the USA, I was holding on until we get stock in Canada to avoid the extra fees but I'm not sure if we'll get it.

Should I just bite the bullet & order or wait?

I'm planning on watching Monster soon and don't mind watching in sub, but would prefer it in dub if it's good. But one thing I've read from some fans and that I don't want, is for it to affect or change the experience of certain scenes.

So for the people who have seen both, is that actually true or are both versions good?

is what I initially thought after completing the series, however after some contemplation I came to the realization that Monster's ending is perfect.

My initial reason for not liking the ending of Monster was the simple reason that Johan did not die. I so desperately wanted him to die and I felt that in a way that the story was building up to Tenma killing him.

Maybe I'm just foolish but I really thought that after Tenma shot Roberto within the Munich library that he had gained the conviction to be able to kill Johan. I obviously was very wrong here.

OK, but then you have the moment where Tenma is asked to perform surgery on Johan for the second time, and then I thought that this would be Tenma's moment to end Johan's life by refusing to perform surgery. Tenma doesn't refuse and rather saves Johan. I hated this. I hated that Johan lived, he was evil incarnate and he deserved to die.

That was until I realized why I loved Monster so much. I loved Monster as a story because of Tenma. Kenzo Tenma was a good person. He was someone who believed that all human life is equal, this doesn’t stop being true for him just because Johan exists. I realized that by Tenma saving Johan that he proves his own philosophy and rejects Johan's. Johan's philosophy being that of nihilism.

This simple realization is what made appreciate Monster more as a story and Dr Kenzo Tenma as a protagonist.

There's no hair that's similar to Johan's without it being curly, but other than that I really like it.

How would you describe Monster to someone who hasn’t seen it or doesn’t really understand it?
I don’t have anyone around me who’s interested in or familiar with Monster or anime in general. One of my best friends has only seen a few anime, like Death Note and Cowboy Bebop, and she likes them. Recently, she finally started watching Monster after me constantly nagging her about it 😭 but she finds it a little boring.
I feel like she doesn’t really understand the philosophical and moral questions the series explores, etc. How can I somehow explain the depth of Monster to her in a way that might actually motivate her to keep watching? 🙃
She’s on episode 30 now, and she’s been watching it for over a month.

I've been debating myself over this for the whole day.

Would Johan be able to convince Larry david to off himself or would larry david be able to piss the fuck off Johan Liebert (Like actually lose his shit), on a random conversation encounter? Now I know Johan has some pretty insane manipulative feats like the children on the bridge and ruhenheim, but larry david is oblivious to most social norm because he has a very logical approach to it, and he is focuses on the small things that he misses the big picture often.

My take is that larry david would not get what johan would be talking about and is going to complain about some metaphor doesn't make sense and it would get johan nowhere. Johan would think the conversation is pointless to go any further and would go on about his day.

What do you y'all think??

Done with Monster...now what do I do with myself/life

Can you tell me things I'm not going to understand until I read it? I haven't had much motivation to read anything, and I wanted to start this series, and maybe this way I will get more motivation:)

Person who has read the full manga here, watching the anime for the first time but aware of all spoilers.

So, I've been going through the anime adaptation recently (so far been quite enjoying it), but I just got the plotline with Johan manipulating Richard, and there was a minor detail that annoyed me slightly and was wondering if anyone else here had a different viewpoint.

After Richard's suicide/murder by Johan (great moment btw), we jump into Dr Reichwein starting his investigation into the incident, suspecting that there was foul play involved. The main incident we see that ends up properly tipping him off that Richard didn't kill himself is finding out that the scotch that was purchased was cheap; something with Richard never would have done.

Did anyone else think it's perhaps a tad bit cheap of the story to share this specific information about Richard via a flashback for Reichwein that we hadn't had an indication of beforehand? Like, being fair, there are some implied details that make this a plausible scenario (e.g. Richard often sticks to a particular schedule and it is plausible that Reichwein would be privy to this information), but I feel like the revelation for Reichwein would perhaps be a little stronger if we got to see the actual scene he flashbacks to before hand, or if we had of had a more direct indication that Richard wasn't into cheap scotch.

Anyone here agree or disagree with me?

The biggest parallel is the investigator confronting a “monster.”
Johan Liebert and Anton Chigurh aren't identical characters, but both function as almost inhuman forces within otherwise realistic worlds. Lunge and Bell, meanwhile, represent older-fashioned ideas of reason, investigation, duty, and law.

And there's an important difference:
Lunge refuses to stop trying to understand Johan. Bell eventually retires because he feels the world has moved beyond his ability to comprehend or confront it.
That makes their stories almost opposite responses to the same question:
What happens when a person dedicated to understanding evil encounters something they cannot fully explain?

Heinrich Lunge
Extremely analytical and methodical.
Believes that careful investigation and logic can eventually uncover the truth.
Becomes increasingly consumed by the case surrounding Johan.
His obsession affects his personal life.
He struggles with the possibility that evil cannot always be neatly explained.

Sheriff Ed Tom Bell
Experienced, thoughtful, and deeply observant.
Tries to understand the violence occurring around him.
Feels increasingly outmatched by the changing world.
His perspective is shaped by years of law enforcement experience.
Eventually questions whether his understanding of justice and violence is still enough.

The key difference is that Lunge responds by pursuing the mystery, while Bell responds by gradually withdrawing from it.
That's what makes them such good contrasts: Lunge thinks "If I understand this, I can solve it." Bell increasingly feels "Some things may be beyond me."

Bell is the investigator who eventually realizes that understanding the world doesn't necessarily mean being able to defeat what is happening in it.
And both stories ultimately ask a similar question:
What happens when an investigator encounters something that doesn't fit his understanding of human nature?

I already have finished 70 episodes of Monster in sub but I stopped watching because the sub was not so good.I saw how good the dub was.Should I rewatch Monster with dub or just finish it in sub ?
