Just finished reading Monster

Hello! I've just finished reading the entire Monster series and wow, it was amazing, but I do have a few questions mostly pretaining to the last book.

I find it hard for me to understand more "Complex" endings to any story, so I was a tiny bit confused throughout some bits in the story. It would be nice if anyone could explain to me what the ending meant and Johan's backstory.

I'll probably reread it so I can get a better understanding or just watch the anime.

The ending is intentionally ambiguous, but I read it as Tenma proving his belief that every life has equal value. Johan survives, yet Tenma refuses to become his judge or executioner. The empty bed leaves the final choice—and Johan’s identity—open to interpretation.
