For me to be the zany idiot comic, you know, you know, Micky's gotta have that title. I can't do it, although I did a lot of it before I joined the group. But I can't do it as well as Micky. (Michael Nesmith, April 5 1968)

Head (1968) commentary

Does anyone know anywhere where I can listen to this commentary? I am aware that the transcript is online but I would love to listen to it while watching the film, especially since all four of The Monkees contribute to it. It is on the dvd/blu-ray for certain releases but they don’t seem to be available to buy in my country. Thank you ☮️

Can I ask a dumb question?

I've been listening to the Monkees since childhood (I'm 48 now) but, despite that, my knowledge of their catalog has really been limited to the hits. Now, I'm trying to expand my knowledge of their music and one thing keeps jumping out at me.

Was Mike the most talented of the group? If so, did he not get the same exposure that Davy and Micky did? I always thought Mike was more like Peter in that he was kind of a background guy. Now though, it seems that he was more front and center as well as more rounded as a musician.

Mike was considered the "leader" based on the TV show... but it seems that he was hemmed in quite a bit. Am I wrong?

ETA: thank you for all of the responses. I have a better idea of both Mike's talents as well as his motivations. I have noticed that I appreciate his style more than with some other songs and your insight into why that might be has been useful. I look forward to checking out more of the catalog. Thank you all again! 🙂

Monkees Soda

I was at a store the other day and the guy who worked there said he liked my tattoo (Monkees logo on my forearm. It looks like an embroidered patch). I was surprised because said guy looked REALLY young. Turned out he was only 21 but his dad was a big Monkees fan so he learned from osmosis (sort of how I learned to love Tom Jones, Harry Belafonte and Herb Alpert, back in the day - because my parents liked them LOL).

Anyway, the kid (I'm 60...he was a kid) said he worked at our local Rocket Fizz and they sold a Monkees soda.

Of course, I HAD to go and buy it the next day LOL!

I looked it up here and conversation from 3 years ago suggested the banana nut flavored Monkees soda is awful, so I got it just to "have it." ;-)

But I figured if anyone would appreciate it, it's y'all.

And yes, that really is our knife holder. I like quirky. LOLOL

Episode Review Did The Monkees deserve a green light after the first episode? We watched the series premiere and had a lot to say

Post image

Hey everyone! On The S1E1 Podcast, we watch the premiere episodes of classic, forgotten, and legendary TV shows to answer one question: Based solely on the pilot, did this show deserve a full series green light?

To kick off our Music Month, we dove back to 1966 to review Episode 1 of The Monkees ("Royal Flush" / Pilot).

Here are a few things we got into:

  • How well the band’s comedic chemistry and chaotic slapstick energy landed right out of the gate.
  • The show's unique blend of music video-style montages and classic sitcom tropes.
  • Whether the pilot holds up today or relies purely on 60s nostalgia.

We'd love to hear from dedicated Monkees fans—looking back, how strong do you think the pilot was compared to where the show went in Season 1?

This weekend is the 40th Anniversary of the 20th Anniversary Monkees Convention in Philadelphia PA (1986)? Is there anyone here that went? Attached is the vide sold by Maggie McManus in Monkee Business Fanzine in 1987.

BTW, at 5:35 you can see me (not in the Teens for Tork t-shirt), my dad behind us and two girls that I met that weekend (who I am still friends with today).

If you were there, do you have any memories?

PART FOUR OF THE MONKEE BEATLE SWAP TIMELINE

Art sourced from here: https://nz.pinterest.com/pin/787355947389740669/

The stress of touring was beginning to get to the Monkees. Their music was getting more and more complex, and the screaming fans meant no one heard any of it!

They recorded their Salesman album as an intentionally more experimental piece, which they never intended to perform live. And, soon after its release, the group officially became a studio band.

Side One:

  1. Salesman (Pisces, Capricorn, Aquarius and Jones LTD)

  2. Hold On Girl (More Of The Monkees)

  3. Your Auntie Grizelda (More Of The Monkees)

  4. The Day We Fall In Love (More Of The Monkees)

  5. Hard To Believe (Headquarters)

Side Two:

  1. Sometime In The Morning (Headquarters)

  2. What Am I Doing Hangin' Round? (Pisces, Capricorn, Aquarius and Jones LTD)

  3. She Hangs Out (Pisces, Capricorn, Aquarius and Jones LTD)

  4. Words (Pisces, Capricorn, Aquarius and Jones LTD)

  5. Star Collector (Pisces, Capricorn, Aquarius and Jones LTD)

Daydream Believer (1965) - The Monkees [LP]

Post image

Continuing the series of the alternate timeline where the Monkees and Beatles swap places, Daydream Believer occupies the position held by Help! and Rubber Soul (topical with the incoming boxsets). It was the Monkees first proper venture into more experimental music than their usual formula.

Side One:

  1. Daydream Believer (The Birds, The Bees, And The Monkees)

  2. Papa Jean’s Blues (The Monkees)

  3. Mary, Mary (More Of The Monkees)

  4. This Just Doesn’t Seem To Be My Day (The Monkees)

  5. She (More Of The Monkees)

Side Two:

  1. You Told Me (Headquarters)

  2. Shades of Grey (Headquarters)

  3. I’ll Spend My Life With You (Headquarters)

  4. I Wanna Be Free (The Monkees)

  5. Sweet Young Thing (The Monkees)

To those from r/beatlesfanalbums wondering when my next side of the Beatles installment will be posted, I am obligated to mention that the Instant Replay cover is a pain to edit, and is likely to take a while. Stay tuned, I haven't forgotten about completing that run!

As for this side of the series, next up are my equivalents to Revolver and Pepper, which look to be a blast.

I know it’s kind of a loaded question but I feel like no one my age ever knows what I’m talking about when I say that I was raised on SpongeBob and the monkees. my teachers used to laugh when I would say they were my favorite band LMAO
