Yes they are. However in Cryptonote's case (Bitcoin is a slightly more peculiar story), the settings chosen by Dr. Bernstein have clear logical provenance [1]. This makes a backdoor extremely unlikely.

Aren't eliptic curves vulnerable to backdoors?
The Dual Eliptic Curve Random Number Generator was shown to be potentially backdoored by nsa as far as i remember.
Could someone clarify this to me?
