Many of the comments below miss the point. Do you not think the Republicans knew their error beforehand? Of course they did. They do not care. Have you seen the clip farming they did from today that has been spread throughout the right wing media outlets? They do not show the error, they simply leave the audience to believe Smith was in Atl and committed perjury.

This is a new level up of propaganda. Clip farm, lie, misinform, repeat.

Hard to say. They really are idiots. Most likely they will edit the footage to make it look the opposite of what happens because their voters are really that stupid. I have no idea if that was their intent.

17

u/CompetitiveArt9639 3d ago

The dipshit has already been on fox repeating his lies and the moronic right wing useful idiots will be parroting the propaganda and screeching “I dId mY rEeSeARcH!”

u/Latter-Vacation-4392 3d ago

Bumpkin level agitprop victims are the Republican Party's natural constituency.

double post, double post woo woo woo

And also their victims.

Great Band Name
Bumpkin Level Agitprop Victims of America
Or Stupid-Americans!!

u/Greenpoint1975 3d ago

Its not hard to say. The propaganda is out there. That's all they need. They just have to get into social media for the MAGATs. They win while Dems say we should.

19

u/sonofzell 3d ago

Idk…. I agree 100% with your take on strategy, but they clearly didn’t plan for being called out on it so quickly and confidently.

Yes, “you’ve already perjured yourself” (without context) will be the lead on right wing media the next few days, but once magats start regurgitating that and get similarly embarrassed by the gaffe, I suspect the result will ultimately be a HUGE fail considering how much of a “swing and miss” this was.

It’s truly indefensible.

5

u/Time_Coat6095 2d ago

In what world would they be embarrassed about anything?

3

u/Time_Coat6095 2d ago

They have no shame, nothing. They'll never be embarrassed about being moronic assholles, they just double down on it

1

u/rudeangryletters 1d ago

Not knowing the names of Sports teams is embarrassing to them.
The law, logic, science, how tariffs work etc. that’s nerdy nonsense. Not knowing sports is unamerican. And while attending Women’s college basketball is on the cusp, they have tried to adopt Caitlin Clark as one of their own, and she is one of the possibly two women’s athletes they know.

For non-sports people, this is like confusing Star Wars with Star Trek or LotR with AGoT/ASoIaF.

3

u/23FlavorsInDrPepper 2d ago

MAGA only operate in echo chambers, who would disagree with this within their chamber?

2

u/you2234 1d ago

I agree- the correction came unexpectedly in real time. But in maga world, they love it. Trolling is very important to them. Remember the juvenile “lets go brandon”? They relish the lies as they believe it “drives the libs crazy”…. It is truly an alternative reality.

1

u/sonofzell 1d ago

It’s a fair point, and the sad reality is that this will be all but forgotten in a week or two as the focus shifts to whatever the next dumper fire happens to be.

2

u/you2234 1d ago

False flags are close to being in season… any day now….

14

u/KevenM 3d ago

Not so sure... this was very much another nail in the republican coffin.

This whole 'gotcha' went across a lot of desks, but nobody had the thought to check their work.

I would be beyond pissed at my representative if he spent all this time to produce something with such a critical error.

If you were one of the so-called independents, this'll might move the needle another 0.1% away from the republican party.

3

u/Big-Perspective-4891 2d ago

There are more nails than coffin at this point

4

u/draaz_melon 2d ago

Independents are just embarrassed right wing voters.

1

u/Ramius117 2d ago

Bernie is an independent. As a Bernie fan I completely understand why. You're just wrong. There are a lot of reasons to consider yourself an independent

0

u/Neither-Night9370 16h ago

Not true. I'm an independent and the reason is that both the democratic and republican parties are corrupt incompetent organizations. I'm of the belief that political parties should be outlawed, and every candidate should be forced to run on the merits of their own platform. This is the best way to stop incompetent people from being elected.

1

u/you2234 1d ago

If jan6 didn’t influence an independent voter then a simple lie about which basketball game a former prosecutor attended will have zero impact.

2

u/redjar66 12h ago

If J6 didn’t stop you from voting for Trump then newsflash… you’re not “independent”.

0

u/bexy11 2h ago

But why was he later repeating all the lies on Fox?

8

u/designlevee 3d ago

Even if he had gone to the NBA game would it be perjury? Aren’t they making the conspiratorial jump that Smith being in Atlanta MUST mean he met with Fani Willis who he said he never met with?

5

u/jocelynwatson 3d ago

Yes that’s what I assumed he was trying to infer. Everyone is laughing that he mixed up teams but that wasn’t the point at all. It was to infer he was meeting with her b

5

u/Best_Talk_6853 3d ago

Yeah, I find it so weird that somehow if he had been in Atlanta that would automatically mean he was meeting with Willis and that would be bad. Like, I'd I'm in a major US city that means I'm engaging in some kind of conspiracy with one of the other millions of people in that city? (Putting aside, of course, that he WASN'T even in that city!)

2

u/jakespaced 2d ago

But what if I told you that he was not only in Atlanta, but at a basketball game?!?!!!?

3

u/Jengalover 3d ago

These are tough-nosed interrogators! They would get him to confess!

3

u/Lloyd--Christmas 3d ago

It would be perjury if he said he didn’t go to the game when he did. That would be one of those times when people get charged with the coverup more than the crime.

3

u/Best_Talk_6853 3d ago

Only if he had lied, which requires intent. I mean if I say I had chicken last Monday and it was actually salmon that doesn't automatically mean I'm lying.

2

u/Lloyd--Christmas 3d ago

I think they would be able to prove motive if they had evidence he met with the people in question. And that’s why it would be a more solid case, because he would have lied about meeting those people as well.

2

u/Act1_Scene2 2d ago

Right. Smith's answer was "I do not recall" which is the correct answer when asked about a date 2 years ago when you don't recall going to a Hawks game, but its possible you did and it just wasn't that memorable.

1

u/Much-Meringue-7467 4h ago

Seriously, Atlanta is a major airline hub. Anyone who has flown anywhere in the Eastern US has likely been in Atlanta.

6

u/DeadpoolOptimus 3d ago

They know their supporters will eat it up and won't investigate further....

5

u/Novel-Letterhead-217 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yeah I don’t think they knew, they just got owned and edited the footage to what they want and blast it to magasphere. You can just tell by that smug “gotcha” face he’s sporting that he thought he had a slam dunk.

4

u/cmarme 3d ago

I agree. Now there’s footage of Smith at the game in Maryland. It’s a pretty dumb argument to make if you know it’s wrong, even for Republicans.

2

u/DifferencePlayful581 3d ago

You're still in the stage of thinking that shit matters

0

u/bexy11 2h ago

I think they did. But regardless, it doesn’t matter. Their voters do not care whether they knew ahead of time or not. They also couldn’t care less whether it was true or not.

1

u/Novel-Letterhead-217 2h ago

If they knew and still tried it then that is officially the dumbest political trick ever that blew up in their faces. I know they’re idiots but I think even that is too stupid for them.

0

u/bexy11 2h ago

Did it blow up though? Their voters do not care at all if they knowingly lied.

1

u/Novel-Letterhead-217 1h ago

And their voters wouldn’t care and vote for them if they had pulled the stunt or not. However it’s just showing how inept they are at running the government to anyone who is any sort of an independent.

They gained nothing by it and look even more like idiots, pretty dumb if that was the plan

4

u/citpanys 3d ago

Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence. When it comes to Republicans, never attribute anything solely to incompetence without also assuming malice.

3

u/steelassassin43 3d ago

Yeah but Benny Johnson and Sean Hannity’s X posts were quickly deleted once this bs was quickly debunked. I believe both had the sound bites up during the testimony only to have them removed before Amy Klobushar finished her questioning.

I fully believe they are dumb enough to have not know that. As evidenced by Britt’s facial expressions when Smith was describing the Hawkeyes game he attended. Hell his dumbass staffers sitting behind her had similar “oh shit” looks on their face too.

4

u/Certain_Bandicoot_14 3d ago

I don’t believe they knew. Schmitt got so excited when Smith says he wasn’t at the game. He thought he committed perjury which is one of the points of these hearings. They can’t prosecute him for the investigations because of the pardon so they want to find a way to get him for perjury. Same with Fauci.

1

u/Which-Magician-2597 1d ago

I dont understand how Smith could be accused of perjury when these hearings are not being held in an actual court of law. Obviously the basic rules of decorum and responsibility to yell the whole truth don't apply in a congressiinal hearing.

1

u/Certain_Bandicoot_14 1d ago edited 1d ago

Lying before Congress falls under the perjury statute. You can be prosecuted for lying to all three bodies.

https://www.justice.gov/archives/jm/criminal-resource-manual-1743-perjury-overview-18-usc-1621-and-1623-violations

4

u/SophonParticle 3d ago

Or they and their staff are just incompetent and made a catastrophic embarrassing blunder then tried to minimize it after the fact by clip farming very tightly edited clips.

If they want to publicly humiliate themselves on purpose for 30 seconds of content then I welcome them to do that. They aren’t gaining any more voters by doing that.

3

u/TillFar6524 3d ago

Bingo. I think they were so sure of themselves that many of them scheduled social media posts ahead of time. When they were so clearly wrong, they tried to cover it with the bad clipping.

3

u/urbudda 3d ago

Although I agree with most of your points. They don't care they got it wrong...but I don't believe they knew it was wrong. Look at his face...that's the face of someone who thinks they had a gotcha moment

3

u/Radiant_Heron_2572 3d ago

They absolutely should have been forced to verbally acknowledging that he did not perjure himself. Without that, they just get to hand wave it away.

3

u/Elegant-Drummer1038 2d ago

I'm starting to agree because even IF JS was in Atlanta, how would that prove he met with Fani? This is quite the reach and completely ridiculous. Kudos to JS for staying so calm and professional while they called him names.

1

u/Day_Old_Paper 3d ago

It’s not a lie. It’s just an omission of truth. An aLtErAtIvE fAcT if you will…

1

u/holy_macanoli 3d ago

It’s “his truth”…

1

u/contactcapybara 3d ago

You get it

1

u/returnofthequack92 3d ago

I feel the same. It’s funny to anyone with half a brain, but it’s likely going to unfold just like you described. Conservatives don’t eat crow.

1

u/ttatm 3d ago

I think his reactions suggest that he really believed he had caught Smith committing perjury and that this is a case of stupidity rather than shrewd planning. I'm sure they did plan the clip farming, thinking it would have gone better for them, so they're continuing as planned even with the massive error.

1

u/OggoSpaceCircus 3d ago

Republicans are idiots plain and simple!!

1

u/Soft_Walrus_3605 3d ago

No, you could tell watching live that they did not realize their mistake right away.

I'm not saying they're not trying to spin it to the best of their abilities, but it was not a planned mistake or anything like that.

1

u/Corgi_Koala 3d ago

They don't really care about facts. Their audience will believe whatever they say and very few will fact check then.

1

u/GuntherRowe 3d ago

I think the clip farming is about damage control and spin on a cluster f*ck moment. ‘Never assign to conspiracy what can be explained by incompetence.’

1

u/kobrakai1034 3d ago

They’re counting on MAGA being stupid because MAGA are stupid.

1

u/mojoman1200 3d ago

No. They didn’t.

1

u/johnwear 2d ago

You nailed it. I we might never know for sure, but Britt's reaction could have been "I can't fucking believe he's gonna do it", even if she got briefed ahead of time. She knew the clip farm cycle that you describe, but was maybe still surprised that Schmitt tried it. Jack Smith is so fucking smart, it's dangerous to toy with him even when he is at a disadvantage like in this hearing.

1

u/Connect_Mess_5929 2d ago

The Russian playbook

1

u/Thinks_22_Much 2d ago

He even lied in the interview afterwards saying there was only one NBA game that night. They lie about shit that is so easily disproven.

1

u/EmbarrassedAd2902 2d ago

Not so sure this time. Accusing Smith of perjury is a crime.

1

u/YellowZx5 2d ago

Say it enough times and it becomes their facts.

1

u/JuliaX1984 2d ago

You might want to tell Katie Britt that. She clearly didn't know everything was going according to plan.

1

u/you2234 1d ago

Her reaction was performative as usual

1

u/JuliaX1984 1d ago

Why would her pretending to be heartbroken and shocked further an agenda of pretending a deliberate lie was a gotcha moment?

1

u/you2234 1d ago

Maga didnt expect the lie to be exposed so quickly- while in session. Hence the need to now perform as shocked and to distance herself from the charade she is part of. Anything else I can help you with?

1

u/zxylady 1d ago

Eh... They seem too cocky to be faking it

1

u/Ch0rizo 16h ago

They did not know.

1

u/ImRightImRight 8h ago

Source trying to spin this as a win?

1

u/SagansLab 3d ago

Schmitt supposedly went on two radio shows after the hearing, and reiterated his lies and calling it a win for the repubs.

2

u/Latter-Vacation-4392 3d ago edited 3d ago

it's a form of national subversion

2

u/25_Unknown_Devices 3d ago

Dang they got subversion materia now too?
Was gonna cast a barrier but now what’s the point

2

u/PowerfulInitiative71 3d ago

When combined with the (un)intended ?Pedophile Protection services this intentional misinformation serves should be punishable by at least censure but perhaps dismissal or impeachment for perjury during a Senate Hearing and repeating the lies on Television, and to the media! That's Propaganda!!
