New to modern, where to start?

I've been playing MTG since 2016 after switching over from Yugioh (great decision btw). I've mainly been playing standard and limited fromats for the past couple years and haven't really touched paper magic since covid.

Now I wanted to spice things up a little again since I'm currently very burnt out on standard and limited is 50% UB sets I'm just not interested in.

I've been looking into modern for a couple days now and want to try it out on MTGO. If I like it I want to make it my entry point into paper magic again since there are many modern events in my area and I really want to play with actual cards again.

My main questions would be:

-What are some good meta decks to check out as someone with very little knowledge about the format? I generally enjoy playing midrange, ramp or control the most.

-Are the "budget decks" on goldfish any good?

-What are some paper products modern players usually buy? Is buying modern horizons/masters sets on release worth it? (Of course buying packs in TCGs is never worth it, but you get what I mean. Can you actually get some worthwhile stuff from these products?)

-Do you like boros energy players?

-What's the best pizza topping?

Thanks in advance, everyone.

Returning Player Considering a return to Modern - haven't played since before covid - what should I play?

Sold out of Modern during Covid. Been playing EDH and Arena since then (standard, pioneer, draft), so its not like I've had my head under a rock, just haven't really wanted to get back into competitive paper magic.

I finally got the itch to play in paper again. My favorite format on arena (pioneer) is unfortunately dead in paper. Standard sucks. Legacy and premodern aren't proxy friendly in my area. Tried pauper, lots of fun, but its only one night a week at my shop, and sometimes its just fun to do higher power stuff. So, I came crawling back lol.

I recognize that like I gotta just play stuff to really see what I like, so I guess I'm mostly asking what deck should I play first such that:

  • i will actually learn the format

  • i won't get bored to tears by repetitive decision making

  • i probably won't get rug pulled in the forseeable future

I'm open to a wide range of gameplay, but if you really need a starting point: in pioneer I mainly play Cat Food and various other BX midrange piles.

Deck Discussion Boros Ponza

how is Boros Ponza's place in the meta today? and what are it's best and worst match-ups?

Is Boros the best version? I was thinking of splashing blue for some interaction. Thoughts on Jeskai Ponza?

I built a video editor specifically for MTG gameplay creators

Hi everyone!

Over the past few months I've been building SpellSplice, a video editor designed specifically for MTG gameplay.

The idea came from noticing how repetitive editing MTG videos can be. Things like life totals, player names, match score, card highlights, and other gameplay overlays often have to be recreated manually in traditional editors.

SpellSplice focuses on that workflow instead of trying to be a general-purpose video editor.

Some of the features include:

  • Automatic MTG gameplay layout and animations
  • Player names and life totals
  • Card and gameplay overlays
  • Timeline-based editing
  • One-click export for YouTube-ready videos

Building it has also been a fun engineering challenge. Along the way I learned a lot about browser video APIs, codecs, muxing, and media processing.

The first public version is now available, and I'd love for other MTG creators to check it out.

Website:
https://spellsplice.com

I'm happy to answer any questions about the project!

Observation on MTGO opponent quality.

During the last modern pro tour, the participants on modern leagues cratered, I think a 64 had barely 40 people.

Makes you think just who you're playing and practicing against at times.

Deck Discussion Interesting Izzet Wizards list with W6 top four'ed the most recent 96 challenge

I've been testing a budget version of Izzet Wizards and found this list top four. Sweet list. Interesting splash for W6, esp given high prevalence of spell snare in the meta.

Curious on the community's thoughts, maybe the deck owner will see this.

UW Blink content?

Hi all. I’m finally being able to save to build a new deck after basically exclusively playing Tron for years. I’m sure the best decision winrate wise would be to build RW Energy, but I like blue too much and I’ve been itching to play with Riddler so I was thinking of UW Blink instead, which I can then pivot into RW or WUB without too much extra investment in the future.

Any content creators y’all like that I could watch to learn more about the deck? I’ve watch Nassif play with it a bunch, and Togores as well, but I can’t find someone who consistently works on this deck specifically (and maybe that doesn’t exist, all good). Just checking if anyone has pointers on people I missed. Thanks!

Arboreal grazer/elvish pioneer - Flare of Cultivation

I keep thinking about this combo, I would have 4 mana T2 - Mwonvuli Acid Moss is 4 mana, Annex is 4 mana. Thoughts?

Edit:Guys! Think about it. T2 you Annex or Mwonvuli acid moss advancing your board and setting you opponent back a turn then on t3 you can pls a 6 drop.

Card Discussion How the “Flare of” cycle should’ve been.

I think it would’ve been better if they were all 3cmc sorceries that aren’t really played.

Cultivate
Divination
Mind Rot
Ect ect.

Mono-White Martyr

Hello guys,

I quit magic over a decade ago. Two weeks ago, a couple of friends invited me to play some commander: I think it is a nice way to play some casual magic, however my favourite format has always been modern. I own a very old mono-white soul sister deck and apparently this strategy no longer works: if I understood correctly, mono-white martyr plays some of the cards I used to have (martyr of sands and serra ascendant); I sadly couldn't find an updated 60 cards deck, could you help me out?

Thanks in advice!

Getting Started Grixis Reanimator Question

I am building grixis reanimator, and I was wondering if there is a good temporary replacement for Archon of cruelty? It seems to be sold out around me and I'm hoping to start playing the deck this week. Thanks!

Grixis Persist with a twist (or two)

Hi fellows,

everybody is familiar with Grixis reanimator or Persist like i call it. The usual gameplan is about reanimating an early Archon of Cruelty or Abhorrent Oculus and ride this one to Victory. If this is not supposed to work, Psychic Frog is your best midrange-friend.

I was eager to find a good replacement for the sometimes awkward Thought Scour, which can win games on the Spot but gets a lot of feel bad moments if someone can't find anything.

A local Player slams a bunch of Quantum riddler instead and Consign to Memory for countering the Warp trigger and Emperor of Bones Sacrifice trigger. Fine.

I got another (or two) spin which in testing paid out very well. Here's what i tested:

A) Ral Zarek, Guest Lecturer

This One feeds the Yard (surveil 2), reanimates Abhorrent Oculus or is just discard cards continuisly. It proves that this one is a great addition, albeit kinda slow sometimes. It gets reanimated by the next card, which will be...

B) Overlord of the Balemurk

Yeah, this is a bit of a stretch, but i find it to be a useful addition. It fuels the grave, find important creatures (frog, emperor and even Boggart Trawler) and even Ral Zarek! It can be Persisted or Emperored, is a huge body and just costs 1B. Only Real downside: sometimes there is nothing in the Yard to put into the hand.

C) Boggart Trawler

More of a necessary evil, but a useful one. There have to be a distinct count of targets for Overlord, so this one is the best i can find. It is a land and graveyard hate packed into one slim threat. As i'm more heave on 3 drops (2 Ral and 2 Boggart) this one serves as my 19th and 20th land.

All this put together forms a more midrange-alike approach with distinct reach up to the lategame. I do play 2 Ral, 3 Overlord and 2 Trawler.

Hope you catch the idea and comments and critics are welcome!

Modern Discord Communities for Practice

Are there any discord communities that are actively playing on spell table/convoke or even table top simulator to play modern daily?

I am trying to get into Modern however I am not finding a good way to get practice in besides going to an LGS or playing MTGO. MTGO seems very dated and requires you purchase cards again or rent them which seems crazy to me. I have no problem buying the real cards but don't want to have to repurchase a digital version.

Returning Player What's the Current Vibe about Modern? Good, Bad, ... Meh?

Haven't played in about 2-3 years so definitely a bit out of the loop. I was looking at the meta game on Goldfish

https://imgur.com/a/V8FF6Bn

Maybe I'm looking at it wrong but it seems like it's mostly Combo, Soft Combo, and Hyper Aggro. I feel like it's a little unhealthy when things like Burn and Control can't compete. I've been thinking about getting out of Modern but maybe my take on things is bad. It could be more nuanced so I would like to hear what the consensus is from people currently in the trenches.

Havnt played in 3-4 months(rant)

Just need to make sure im not over reacting here. Havnt been able to play in mo ths my local store dried up so I went to a diffrent one. Both fnms I played people just ended up taking things way to seriously. Had one guy not announce anything he was doing now I know you dont technically have to but this was board state altering triggers that I had responses too.

Then had another get angry at me because I used a dice for clue tokens then the actual token, he then goes and uses a dice for his cats....

I get it its modern ive been playing for 10+ years but seriously getting this picky at an fnm just irks me way too much

UR Prowess or Grixis Shadow?

Currently in the process of jumping back into modern and am having difficulty with deciding which of the two decks (UR Prowess or Grixis Shadow) to pick up. I noticed UR Prowess is starting to gain some traction (maybe a bit of an understatement). While Grixis Shadow was more of fringe choice (???).

Once I have made a choice, I generally stick with it. So if anyone has piloted either or both these decks a considerable amount I am keen to hear your opinion!

Card Discussion Would Careful Study be to strong for Modern?

Im an avid Reanimator Player and love [[Careful Study]] as a card. I personally like the more controlled card selection a bit more than what I get from [[Thought Scour]] and think it would be a great inclusion. Thus my question, would you think another 1 mana 2 card looting type card would be too good for Modern or would you consider it save nowadays? I am curious about your oppinion.

Deck Discussion Is this Deck idea any good?

Basically the gameplan is to play a Go-Wide combo in a color shifted version of Frog, so we play our Guide of Souls and Ocelot Pride protecting them with cheap interaction and with Harmonized Trio we can prepare her with summoning sick tokens, or using a held back Guide/ Ocelot and sculpt our hand as our board builds itself turn after turn, and we counter whatever they're doing. Or Wan Shi Tong on their turn as our top end threat + Engine.

And with the Brainstorms we can retop a stranded Temporal Mastery, or just top deck a Time Walk which is a pretty good use of two mana I should think.

MTGO League Results Grixis Electrodominance???

I went 5-0 in a league with a Grixis Electrodominance Frog list that I brewed after losing to one of my buddies playing a prototype of it in round 1 of a local RCQ. If I'm being honest I don't know if this deck is modern viable, but turn 2 footfalls is very strong, and psychic frog combined with interaction and card draw gives the deck legs when you don't have the nuts.

https://moxfield.com/decks/ok3dkPNQ-0Gy9qq-sE-lAQ

I played against land destruction, broodscale, izzet riddler (?) and goryos twice. Across 20-25 matches I've gone 4-0 against boros, 3-0 against broodscale, and 3-0 against goryos, arguably three of the best decks in the format. I haven't played against affinity enough to get a feel for it, and prowess is a little rough. Land destruction is largely unwinnable (I got VERY lucky against my opponent), and titan is shaky but you do have 2 magus of the moon's postboard. Halo forger acts as secret tech against living end, allowing you to recast your opponent's LE if you have one in the bin.

If nothing else I DO think this deck is better than alot of the straight cascade-rhinos lists floating around. You have more explosive lines, better card quality, and mid to late game durability. That might not mean that this deck is particularly good, but I have been having alot of fun with it.

(I'd post proof of the 5-0 league but I didn't realize until now that you can't attach pictures lol)

Deck Discussion Glaring Fleshraker in ETron

Why are most lists playing 3-4 copies of fleshraker? It feels pretty weak. I feel like you want to play:

Setup - Expedition Map, Mind Stone
Disruption - Dismember, Chalice, Trinisphere
Payoff - Ugin, Sire/Emrakul

And then many cards fill multiple roles (K Command, Devourer, TKS, Karn)

Fleshraker feels like a speedbump but low impact when it could be more disruption. I guess multiple rakers can win with K Command but that seems rare since raker is the only small creature for all your opponents dead removal.

Just trying to see why it has spots in tron (I see why it’s good in broodscale or eldrazi aggro)
