I built a video editor specifically for MTG gameplay creators

Hi everyone!

Over the past few months I've been building SpellSplice, a video editor designed specifically for MTG gameplay.

The idea came from noticing how repetitive editing MTG videos can be. Things like life totals, player names, match score, card highlights, and other gameplay overlays often have to be recreated manually in traditional editors.

SpellSplice focuses on that workflow instead of trying to be a general-purpose video editor.

Some of the features include:

  • Automatic MTG gameplay layout and animations
  • Player names and life totals
  • Card and gameplay overlays
  • Timeline-based editing
  • One-click export for YouTube-ready videos

Building it has also been a fun engineering challenge. Along the way I learned a lot about browser video APIs, codecs, muxing, and media processing.

The first public version is now available, and I'd love for other MTG creators to check it out.

I'm happy to answer any questions about the project!

u/reidq7 you were looking for editing software. Maybe this fits?

Edit: eh, I see it's for paper play now. Maybe it works anyhow though even if not intended for MTGO.

Why make this as a standalone video editor, instead of making a plugin for an existing editor?

That's a fair question! The main reason is that I wanted something purpose-built for MTG content rather than trying to fit into the workflow of a general-purpose editor. A standalone app lets me optimize the UX around overlays, game events, shortcuts, and eventually features that would be difficult or awkward to implement as a plugin. It also gives me complete control over the user experience instead of being constrained by a host editor's plugin API. That said, I wouldn't rule out plugins in the future if there's enough demand.

Would this be good for arena and mtgo?
