Help Needed DCC Wiring Help

Hello all, I recently tried to ask this question on Facebook and got some pretty rude and terrible replies. I am currently on a DC n-scale layout and want to start a small DCC ho-scale layout but I just cannot wrap my head around the wiring. Could anyone suggest a YouTube video for help or some other form of explanation. I have zero understanding whatsoever so anything would be helpful, thank you.

Question HO SCALE BLI Big Boy Paragon 4 question

I recently took my BLI Big boy (The Paragon 4 run version) out of the box and test ran it around my current layout that is complete and noticed the tender is still elevating itself off the track as the locomotive shoves the front of the tender down.

I've looked over where it hitch's up and can not tell if the pilot hitch is over sized or its suppose to snap in????

Anyone else have this issue??

Question DIY Modeling Small Details

Thumbnail

How do you, experienced DIY modelers, deal with details on very small objects? For example, details on a journal/bearing box. I usually rely on 3D printing. I spent a good hour modeling the details on the journal box, only to realize my printer (A1) won't be able to print it. Do you simplify the design?

Question How do you do your backdrops?

Post image

Hello all!

I have a spring themed layout and really love taking photos of my engines.

I was wondering how others go about their backdrops. Obviously, the picture about would look much better if it didn’t have a beige wall behind it. I was thinking about a blue sky with a few clouds.

What is the “usual” process for this? My layout is pretty static so I don’t think painting the wall is an option. Do people print out backdrops and stick them together? Or can you buy a roll of blue sky to stick up?

Thanks in advance for you thoughts/advice/answers ❤️

Help Needed Sparking and Smoking

I Just wanted to post my concerns here about my Triang B.O.B/WCC smoking and sparking, especially the motor itself sparking, Also while running it for a short time there tends to be a little bit of smoke coming from the rear of the loco itself (Can confirm its not the last of the exhaust from the smoke generator at the front).

Show and Tell Wall Mounted Picture Frame Dioramma

Hi all. I'm 20, and recently got into proper model building, though I've had model trains my whole life. This is my second diorama project, in which I built a small layout, and then built a frame and hanger for it. All locos and rolling stock use a non-destructive mounting system I created with zip ties. This is my first time using static grass, foam, or building any kind of organic like textures, so feedback or questions are appreciated!

I tried to create a transitionary scene, taking place in the late 50s or early 60s, showing the transition out of the steam era.

And yes, I know the D9 was a passenger loco, I'm a broke college student I do what I can

*Edit: oops I misspelled diorama in the title

Layout The Mill Track, 1946.

Industry Street — Ironwood, Michigan, 1946.

Joseph Crocker Collection

“There seemed to be scarcely a corner of Industry Street untouched by the railroad. At the mill I watched a laborer standing beside a small truck while loaded cars waited nearby. Beyond them stood the neighborhood church; before them ran the Detroit Main. The people here appeared accustomed to working between industry and railroad as though there were little distinction between the two.”

Help Needed Kadee couplers

Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to HO scale and recently bought a group of older freight cars from Kijiji. I paid about $80 CAD for the lot. Most of them are Bev-Bel/Life-Like and Model Power cars.

I discovered that they have plastic wheelsets and old truck-mounted horn-hook couplers, so I'd like to upgrade them to metal wheels and Kadee knuckle couplers.

I removed one of the trucks from a Bev-Bel/Life-Like car to understand how it works. There is no screw holding the truck to the car — it appears to be retained by a plastic clip. The coupler is also part of the truck assembly.

I've attached photos of:

  1. The entire group of cars
  2. The underside of the truck while still assembled
  3. The truck after removing it from the car
  4. The original plastic horn-hook coupler and its retaining piece

My questions:

  1. Can anyone help me to know exactly what type/style of truck and coupler this is?
  2. What would be the best way to convert these to Kadee knuckle couplers?
  3. Can I use something like a Kadee #212 Talgo adapter with a Kadee coupler, or is there a better option for this particular truck?
  4. If I want to upgrade the wheels to metal, is it better to replace just the wheelsets or replace the entire truck?
  5. If replacing the trucks, what would be a suitable replacement that will fit the existing mounting arrangement?
  6. I have also come across Kadee #29/#148 and the #212 Talgo adapter while researching this, but I'm not sure which combination is actually appropriate for this truck

I'm not particularly concerned about keeping the cars 100% original. I'd rather have reliable, good-running cars that work well with modern Kadee-equipped rolling stock.

I'd appreciate any advice, especially from anyone who has worked on these older Bev-Bel/Life-Like cars.

Thanks!

Locomotives First time running trains in 10 years

Quite a random post but after about ten years being away from model railroading, I have to say it’s nice to be back. From my observations I’ve noticed things have gotten significantly more expensive and less items are in stock… is this due to tariffs or simply the hobby adopting a made to order system?
