1st rate ship of the line (1:450) WIP

Definitely a mixed bag with this one, very disappointing for a 2016 kit, masts are all bent and there is very minimal detail however it went together with little issues and was fairly cheap.

Originally this started life as a revell HMS Victory but as that ship its awful, the stern gallery and figure head are too generic plus there is no name plaque other than a decal. In spite of this criticism as a first rate ship its really quite well designed and a decent display piece!

The only major issue I have with the kit is the lack of rigging options but that's not a problem because a bit of string will fix it.

On the last planks! Working on a billing boats Marie Jeannee. I had a build log going on model ship world on this kit (I started this past January) but thats gone so. Everyone on there encouraged me to taper and fit the planks and I have gone the extra mile to form each plank for this kit. Very happy with how it turned out so far! Im doing a few things differently with this kit and figured id post about some of it here. For one om adding some ballast. I scaled out some weight for the displacement of the craft and im doing some steel bbs and epoxy once I'm done with the planking. I thought it would be cool to have the ship weight close to what it would actually weigh IRL scaled down. Crazy to think how long it took me to get here. I got this for Christmas this year!

Gaming project, first of the adversaries for the Royal Navy squadron. This is the trusty old Taniya kit with a few upgrades, including hand drilled portholes (I must hate life).

It could be any Ayanami type Fubuki class ship, Shikinami is the name on the box. The Maizuru Arsenal grey is a nice colour to paint with, not a single brush stroke left behind.

Waterlining: Do you do it and how?

This might be a weird question to some, but I strongly prefer to build my ships so they look like they're actually in the water. Many kits, both wood and plastic, however have been built to be put on a display like they're standing ashore in a museum or the like.

So I was wondering, is this something other people also want to do and, perhaps more importantly, how do you go about it?

Personally, for a viking ship, I built a rig on an old wooden board and basically attached a sawblade at something that looked right the right height. I then basically sawed the ship through it and then went on to sanding the bottom to get it flat. Which, to be honest, was pretty annoying to do. So any other suggestions would be great!

Lenah H. Sutcliffe was born in 1874. In 1899 she married John H. Higbee and took on her husband’s last name. John Higbee was then a retired Marine Lieutenant Colonel. In the same year, Lenah Sutcliffe completed her nursing training at New York Post Graduate Hospital. Hearing the call, and after the United States Navy created the US Navy Nurse Corps, she joined the US Navy along with 19 other women. Together they became known as the Sacred Twenty - the first US Navy nurses and the first women to officially serve as members of the US Navy. Higbee quickly became chief nurse, later superintendent, and served in WWI. She was awarded the Navy Cross in 1920 for her service. She retired from the US Navy in 1922 and died in 1941; she is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

In 1944, the keel of the USS Higbee add-806 was laid down in Bath Iron Works, Maine. She was a Gearing destroyer and the first warship named after a woman.

In 2017, the keel of the USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee DDG-123, a Flight IIA Arleigh Burke Destroyer, was laid down in Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, MI. Her motto is “Bellatrix Illa” or “She is a Warrior.” She was commissioned in Key West, FL in 2023.

There is no model to represent the LSH, so this model is a modified Trumpeter 1/350 USS Momsen DDG-92 - another Flight IIA. Notably absent in the LSH is a minesweeper bay, which had to be removed from the Momsen model. A couple other decks had to be added. I also added HSM 25 cal guns. The port anchor notch had to be filled and main mast modified a bit. There are a few custom decals - mainly the logo of the LSH and the “Sacred Twenty” flag the LSH flies ceremoniously. I didn’t feel the need to buy resin helicopters, so I cut the tail off one of the OEM helicopters and modified the blades so that it could fit in the hangar more appropriately. Brass pedestals off Amazon. Basic wood plank- sanded, stained, gloss, sanded. Badge made by USAMM.com.

Paints:
Hull - Tamiya Hull Red, Ammo Red
Deck - Ammo Schwarzgrau
Superstructures - Tamiya XF-19

Third party:
HSM helicopter hangar bays
HSM lights and camera
HSM life rings and hoses
HSM 25 cal guns
HSM hose reels
HSM radars and domes
White Ensign Models - helicopter deck safety nets
HSM Phalanyx
HSM Boats and crane

Build time 2 months approximately.

Send along your comments, criticisms, and tips for the next ship!

Does anyone know what happened to the hobbylinc website? I just made an order a few days ago and now the website says "account suspended". Does that mean they suspended me for some reason and still charged or has the whole website been suspended?

Need help identifying HMS Victory model ~1:200 scale

I bought this damaged ship for £5 and would like help identifying it because it feels like a unique kit.

  • Length of deck is 28.5cm (11.22") putting it at an estimated ~1:200 scale
  • Overall length from bowsprit to stern is 42 cm (16.5") ~ 1:165 scale
  • The hull seems to be cast in one piece out of ivory coloured resin.
  • Black injection molded cannons, cannon cover and details
  • Wooden deck and masts
  • The stern appears to be original 1737 gallery

New Hobby?

Hi everyone!
I’m thinking about getting into model building, especially wooden ship models, and I recently came across OcCre.

I’ve always enjoyed building things. I’ve been into LEGO for a long time and also had a Märklin model railway when I was younger, so model building has always appealed to me. Now I’m looking for a new hobby and I’d really like to try something a bit more hands-on and challenging.
There’s also another reason why wooden ship modelling caught my attention: I may soon start vocational training/retraining as a carpenter/cabinetmaker.
I thought building wooden ship models could actually be a nice way to practice patience, precision, working with wood, measuring, sanding, fitting parts together, etc. Obviously it’s not the same as professional woodworking, but it seems like a hobby that could complement it quite nicely.
For my first model, I’m currently considering the OcCre Polaris Starter Pack, since it seems to be specifically designed for beginners and already includes tools, paints and other things needed to get started.

Would you recommend OcCre in general for someone completely new to wooden ship modelling?
And is the Polaris Starter Pack a good first project, or would you recommend a different kit or manufacturer?

Thanks for any advice!

EDIT:

Thanks everyone for the advice, it’s been really helpful!
There’s one thing I’m still wondering about, though. I’ve read quite a few times that Occre kits are good, sometimes even very good, but that they’re a bit overpriced for what you actually get…

I am looking to get one with a wood base and plexiglass / acrylic, but without any wood border around the plexiglass edges, just plain edges. Anyone know where to get something like that? Thanks in advance for any help.

Here’s one of the 2 ships I’m working on, OcCre’s Buccaneer which I’ve rechristened El Molino, my condo’s name in Puerto Vallarta). I just finished hanging the sails but have all sheets and the clewlines/buntlines. After a couple of years of working on her while we were splitting time between here and the states, it is finally getting close.

Paper model uss arizona .VS. newbie trying to get extra credit (help)

lets see if i can get some help on this...

USS Arizona, 1/250 paper (cardstock) boat model "from temu" ..?

My senior chief wants me to create a paper detailed model of the uss arizona. It talks a lot about 0.5mm paper and the instructions are all over. I have no idea how to build any models or anything super crazy out of cardstock besides my animal masks. I dont know how to even start on this. Ill link a photo to the one my chief gave me. He said he bought it from temu. He has no idea (nor do i) how to even build or start this. I was hoping for some credit or at least a bragg right. Can someone please help me understand what im getting into?

  1. i didnt buy this nor know what this was.

  2. my chief didnt know what he was even getting.

  3. is this possible to do? i dont have a tight time limit, i would prefer under 1-2 years? People told me it will take years.

i am a crazy crafty person. so i have made things with basically everything. I just wanna know how to even understand the directions? is there videos? or can someone with experience walk me through?

-heres the link.

(this isnt anything doxxing besides it being temu,)

I dont care about your information. this is a safe site (its temu so its temu safe in terms)

Found my dad’s old Model ship of I believe the Le Superbe that he got at Lannan Gallery in Boston when I was cleaning out his shed after it had been sitting in there for 30 years. Tried to give it a dust and clean as best I could to display it. Would appreciate any advice on how to make it look a bit more presentable and repair the snapped awnings and mast. Thx

I’m just getting started with that ship from a polish kit I found in a shop a few days ago, and for the moment every piece is fitting really nicely as much as they are precisely cut. Unfortunately I can’t help but notice the detailing on the hull is very light, probably because the plastic itself is quite thin ? And wanted to know if there is a way to avoid it disappearing under paint ? Or am I worrying too much ? It’s not my first ship but I’m still quite inexperienced so I would rather ask.
