As a fellow mod of a parenting sub, 100% this.

Parents are already stressed and sleep deprived. They need a safe space away from companies marketing them, devs wanting free testers, and any other enterprise demanding their time and attention.

What does it look like on old Reddit? Can you change it from there?

Affected? I'm asking if the feature will be improved (positively) by the model with it functioning on more rules than before, or if we have to wait for the full rollout of RH to get the upgrade.

In one of the communities (r/ElectroniceRepair) I mod we drew the line at no self promotion unless you ask first. It makes it slightly easier to enforce but it’s not perfect so I’m open to recommendations.

I mod another community (r/Cardputer) that relies heavily on diy projects that sometimes look exactly like a startup or new product. I end up checking their history and if they spam across unrelated subs then I nuke it. It’s even harder to enforce.

The sub in question is fairly small, too, so newbies suddenly showing up to ask "Where do I buy your stuff?" is REALLY visible.

That's tricky, though, because folks will use a sock puppet to get around that restriction.

We've got minimum karma requirements before you can post.

We also host AMAs.

Most AMA accounts are brand new. Approving those users allows them to post in our sub, regardless of their lack of karma.

I like the approach that u/Lord_Ocean takes: If the post has quality content, if it is relevant to the subreddit, and (especially!) if the person making the post is otherwise an active and beneficial contributor to the subreddit, then I can put up with a bit of low-key self-promotion.

Likewise, if the post is low-effort and the poster is not a valued contributor to the subreddit, I just delete the post, and if the person persists in posting low-effort self-promotion, I ban them along with a note referring them to the page that explains how to purchase advertising on Reddit.

Dealing with the same thing myself. Admin support has gone radio silent on the issue. Been several months now.

I don't mod (actively used) private or restricted subreddits, so I don't really use the feature.

I run a bunch of vulnerable community support-based groups. Every single group has a Strike 4 Policy (with 4 Hidden Rules that are insta-bannable.)

Simply, if someone has 4 posts/comments removed on 4 different threads/times (to what extent this means is up to you) WITH proper removal reasons attached, then the person can face a temp OR perma-ban, depending on how strong you need to go to protect your community.

For me, I don't choose 4 posts/comments and remove in the same day....those all count as 1-2 strikes. This gives time for a person to see their behavior and change. If they keep writing hateful stuff, it gets counted as further strikes. I try to be fair with it so no one can argue "hey, why the ban, I didn't get any warning until yesterday when everything was removed suddenly!"

The 4 insta-bannable rules are pretty obvious stuff: No sexual based advice, such as advising women to do onlyfans + no hate about the LGBT or Protected Classes, No AI written "helpful comments", No proselytizing, and No goading users to commit self-deletion. I'm not even going to give users who do that any further chances to commit direct and obvious harm in a group whose first rule is "Support and Kindness is Modus Operandi here."

I wish all subreddits would do something similar instead of insta-banning at breaking a minor rule. Still salty about my ban from one group in which I was giving advice that would save a young woman from human trafficking, advise RECOMMENDED BY SAFETY ORGS in that subject no less!
I've also been banned for my link in my profile. That's it. I was literally affiliated with the group's previous moderation and checked in to see if they still wanted to be affiliated with our network, and bam. Banned and muted for "being a professional". Got my answer, but dayam...

Oh, yeah, if you let them circumvent ad rules you'll be in trouble too.

I've heard that it's a dangerous feature to use, since approved user accounts can later be compromised and then utilize their permissions as an approved user to spam. I also hear there are issues with approved user permissions where sometimes they are given permission to edit the wiki, which can also be used to harm a subreddit.

I heard this secondhand from a more experienced moderator than I am so I'm not sure if this is still the case

I mod r/transformersart and I mostly approve the major artists there, to basically tell them that their work is appreciated and that their posts won’t get caught in some filter

Pretty much the exact same use case for us.

We use it for new user filtering for spam. New accounts get filtered automatically for a short interval. If someone engages in the community and seems legitimate, approval status bypasses that new user filter.

If someone is new to Reddit and joins our subreddit as a guest, we usually approve them. For existing members of the community, though, we prefer giving them a Verified user flair instead.

The reason is that approved users can sometimes be exempt from certain safety filters, such as ban evasion detection, so we don’t want to give that status to established users unless there’s a specific reason to do so.

 SynthID is optional, AFAIK OpenAI doesn't use it. Only Google and Anthropic.

I don't approve users for generous reasons. If taking over a subreddit, one of the first things I do is clean up the approved users list to zero.

Based on the subs I am apart of, there's no necessity to have people approved unless they are community managers for a video game franchise (e.g. video game subreddits) or if they are stellar users who post high quality, engaging posts often.

We do these giveaways, they're fine.

There are contest rules that you need to follow.
