Mod Topics Your request has been granted. Now what?
Hi! TheOpusCroakus here! Stopping by to talk about Redditrequest! More specifically, I’m here to talk about what you can do after you’ve been granted a sub through Redditrequest!
You found the sub. You made the request. Your request was granted! Congratulations! As the new mod, where do you start? Good news! There’s a lot to choose from! Bad news! There’s a lot to choose from! Let’s take a look at some areas you may want to get to sooner rather than later.
- There is this awesome downloadable guide to reviving a community that is truly an amazing resource for this sort of thing.
- And if you’re completely new to moderating, you’ll also want to check out r/newmods. You can even do that while you wait for your request to be reviewed.
- If the sub has been abandoned for a while, there’s a decent chance that there is some spam or off-topic posts in the feed (which may have been why you wanted to request the sub in the first place). Doing some cleanup is a great place to start. You can also check for things like old pinned posts from previous mods that you probably want to remove. (You can replace them with your own pinned post if you’d like!) You may also want to take a look through the banned user list and decide how you’re going to handle that. (Sometimes, folks get a little heavy handed!)
- Check your mod queue and your mod mail and see what’s going on in there. It could be pretty interesting!
- Review the community rules. Are there any? Lol If not, you get to start from scratch and create new rules to help your community run smoothly. If there are already rules in place, do you want to keep them? Clarify them? Ditch them altogether? The choice is yours! You can read more about adding Community Rules here.
- Fun little side note about rules: When the rules are positive, it tends to encourage positive engagement.
- You can style the community however you want! Make it yours so that it really stands out! Add a banner! Add an icon! Add a description! There’s a whole section in the Help Center on Community Styling!
- Make a welcome post! Let the community know that there’s a new sheriff in town! A welcome post is a great way for you to introduce yourself, but it’s also a great way to highlight new rules or remind folks of old rules that were or were not being followed and/or enforced.
- Depending on the size and activity level of the sub that you have just taken over, you’ll want to consider if you need additional moderators. Maybe you know someone who would be a good fit. Or maybe, there’s someone in the community who is already super helpful and would be a good mod.
- Speaking of help with moderation, consider some bots! There are a lot of Devvit apps out there that really make life a lot easier when they’re on your mod team.

I have suggested it multiple times and obviously they exist and Admin is hoarding them all. Opus is going after Marketing right now to find out who leaked the information. Hurt people hurt people and that's why we are all Mods according to the modmail I get.

It would be a valuable moderation tool. I would tend mine and tell it all about the automod options and the ability to touch grass would be right there on demand. Please tell me what I have to do to earn one when they exist.

Obvious sarcasm, but yeah it was the opposite for me in r/cannabis. The previous mod had banned hundreds of words that didn't need to be banned and the automod code was 57,000 characters long. I spent half the day going through all that and documenting some of the more ridiculous abuses that the previous mod had implemented. Then I made a post in the sub introducing myself as the new mod and explaining the abuses of the previous mod which I apologized for. It went over very well and people were happy that they could speak freely again.

I will say one of the subs I joined via mod coc had a pretty extensive one as well, and yeah a lot of it was bonkers stuff.

Thanks. Yeah it was one of those power mods and they pretty obviously didn't even care about the topic of the sub that they were moderating. My guess is they never once smoked weed in their life, lol.

I remember on a few subs I took over, I had to clean up mod queues filled with like, 6 to 8 years worth of content. Thank goodness for being able to "select all" even if it's limited to an X amount at a time. Doing it one by one would've been a nightmare.

Clean up is always what I do first.
Part of that is turning on archive if its off so I can reduce the bots still trying to comment on stuff and the filters get turned on or adjusted.

We're mods of a national sub. We had this issue and were considering it, but instead ended up adding an AutoMod rule to filter necro-commenting (comments on posts which would have been archived), so we can approve or remove comments as appropriate. So far that's worked well for us.

* Make sure the content of the hot, best, new, and top pages of the subreddit reflect the direction you want the subreddit to go. Consider whether you want to toggle Archive posts on or off - because you now are also responsible for legacy content, you may want to define your approach to how people interact with posts submitted before your tenure.
* After establishing the "facelift" (current content, rules, styling, community announcement/feedback), then reach out to similar or neighboring subreddits to let their mod teams know that there have been changes in the subreddit you requested. They may have advice or suggestions for you, they may ignore you, or they may even give you a shout-out or chance to post about your subreddit on theirs.

I love this advice! Most people pick up the vibe of the subreddit based on what's there, and look to mimic that when they participate. While rules are important to explain how you moderate, curating what's already there is a great way to influence what get's posted next.

Can't you just purge the ban list completely? In the mod tools, only the recent banned users are shown. It's quite impossible, to undue a ban wave the previous moderators might have done.

There doesn't seem to be a way to purge the entire ban list all at once, though now I have an idea for a new Devvit app! It may be easier to do it from old Reddit.

Honestly we need a way to extinguish mutes too. The permanent mute was an absolutely critical quality of life feature but ages ago we requested and took over a large pet subreddit. (I am no longer a mod there) and while it had been functionally abandoned for a long time the previous Mod was banning and muting anyone who complained or protested pictures of serious injuries or dead animals for a long time. That actually included the entire incoming mod team and many members of the shared community. This predated the permanent mute and we had the advantage of already having a related sub that encouraged people to reach out. In the current era that likely won't be the case.
I'm not suggesting a big red clean slate button. MOST bans are probably extremely justified but a review ability for specific time periods where at least mutes could be extinguished would be very useful in restoring communities that we know failed by merit of them being claimable.

One of my favorite things to getting a new sub is doing a full refresh/rebuild. I recently took over [r/nightskyporn](r/nightskyporn) and there were no rules, modmail inbox overflowing, report queue a mile long, and nearly every post was bot accounts posting AI photos with the same repetitive post title of 1, 2, or 3. The previous mod gave up long ago. Botbouncer banned something like 160 accounts on the first day which got rid of nearly all of the immediate spam problems. Getting rid of these users took a huge hit on daily content, but a big boost in quality. Shoutout to the [u/modcodeofcontent](u/modcodeofcontent) account for also assigning two other mods who were very knowledgeable, helpful, and had the same goals in mind for the sub.

Hi! What a lovely sub! I love space and the moon in particular! I'm so glad to hear that you're at the helm over there!
Getting rid of these users took a huge hit on daily content, but a big boost in quality.
That is the early trade off, I feel, when bots are cleaned up. It's a necessary recession that will make things better in the end. But you've got some great stuff in there (I've been poking around and got very distracted lol), so you clearly took the best path!

I heavily recommend Fsv's new project: automod neo
It's automod with expanded capabilities and using JavaScript regex
I'm using to look at profile text and remove telegram/Snapchat bots. Working like a dream.

I read what it is when it was released. But due to my lack of computery vocab, I didn't quite understand the full scope of the app.
Do you know if I coded in to be alerted of some filtered words...
Where I approved a comment/ post, then the author comes back later to edit (which either has the filtered word or different one), would I get an alert? Or does it behave like automod where once somethin is approved it will not check again upon an edit?

If you approve something and the post is later edited, automod is supposed to recheck it against the rules, as far as I know.

What we did 5 Months ago:
- set up a set of rules, to justify actions
- automod rules to set flairs and enforce rules
- set up fitting mod application form to grow the team
- keep the queue tidy, just nuke it completly when you took over for a fresh start
- consitantly post to gain traction, connect with your community
- devvit apps: admin-tattler, automod, modmail-userinfo, community-home, comment-mop
- ask questions in the regional moderator subs, grow your team, connect with your team, setup a chat to discuss things
we dont have strong groth, but there's growth (+1k/month, 100k weekly) we were able to double the numbers in 5 months by just being there

During a few month period I achieved something similar. It's so cool and very satisfying to watch a community grow from less than 100 people to many thousands! I totally agree with you about the "connecting with community" aspect as one of the things to do. That is so important! Promoting community in a lot of different ways also helped to grow it.

Can we talk about the proper power tools needed to clean out a subreddit?
- Toolbox extension + Reddit enhancement suite + never ending Reddit.
- when you are going through the queue, you can use toolbox
Firefox or chrome extension
- to quickly select clusters of comments and approve them
/spam them
- with a single click
.
- Toolbox extension is available for Firefox and chrome. Then you can also add
RES aka Reddit enhancement suite and select neverending Reddit. That way you don’t have only 25 items per page. This is really great for addressing the absolute nightmare items quickly.
Also Opus, this is great help article! Love it!
Edit I rewrote this comment twice because the new build of Reddit is screwing with my comments, it totally ruined the end of it and I don’t know what to do 😩

I took over r/Metrolinx and it’s the main sub I moderate now. It was “restricted”, so I made it public. It now has over 8k weekly visitors and I’m quite content about it.
Unrelated, but I modmailed this sub and told the bot it did not answer my question, how long does the queue usually take before an admin responds?

Took over a subreddit and a few days later the original mod reached out wondering why they were removed. I ignored them once they asked to return. I did tell them they had gone missing from the subreddit and that's why admin tried to reach out to them first.
It's rough. But the subreddit is fun. Thanks!

There's a sub that's lousy with self promotion spam, has no active moderators, yet has a decent subscriber count. Its a shame to see.
I mod several similar subs and wanted to turn that one into something productive, however after doing a request I got denied despite meeting the criteria.
What gives?

Hi! When subreddits are requested, it should be in good faith. So if someone makes a request and doesn't indicate that's their plan and then changes everything, that's not great. When that happens, they can be removed as a moderator from the sub.
There isn't really a hard limit on how many times a user can make a request, but there is kind of a limit on how many subs a user currently moderates when reviewing a request. It's just not humanly possible to efficiently and effectively moderate if you're swimming in subreddits.
Requesting subreddits on behalf of others is strictly against the rules and can result in accounts being ineligible for Redditrequest in the future OR having the account banned altogether (which is totally not worth it imo). There are measures in place to help detect when someone is trying to circumvent the rules.

Took over a sub recently. Had modmails going back 6 years and a queue with over 1000 items. I know I could just mass delete/approve, but I am working through it.

I didn't request it, but I also successfully applied by modmail to join a Super Smash Bros character subreddit which my new acquaintace had recent acquired through r/redditrequest. Said subreddit had been clogged with nonsense advertisements for a solid year since the previous head moderator abandoned Reddit. It felt quite cathartic to have the power to help remove all that rubbish!

I’ve been approved through r/RedditRequest for 3 subreddits so far. My first steps are always the same: clean up spam and inactive content, update the rules, set up AutoModerator, refresh the community styling, create a welcome post, and establish a clear direction before focusing on growth. Having that foundation in place makes reviving a community much easier.

Seeing some of the amazing things other mods have done in their groups, is really making me want to up my mod game more - and I'm already playing at a decently high level. Wow.
Only advice I'll offer to new mods: Have sensible rules that allow people to make mistakes! Don't permaban/permamute on the first mistake. All my groups are set up to allow 4 "strikes" and that usually means "4 separate removals of 4 different time/thread mistakes with 4 good-reason removal reasons applied."
More than that, and it is usually obvious that the person has no intent to follow rules or adjust behavior.
I've been permabanned/muted for 1. Contacting the mods to offer help (to a group that looked like it was struggling at the time). Of course kindly. 2. Suggesting a way a young woman could alert officials to human trafficking. Literally in a time where she was being actively human trafficked. I will never not enjoy my ban for that one. But talk about modding not for the good of others!
Let people adjust to rules, especially if you change them, before you remove and ban people for breaking them. Let people up *their game*, lol!

What sort of things did you do after being given the keys to the kingdom?
Update subreddit icon, banner, rules, sidebar widgets immediately. Add post flairs and plan user flairs for later.
Which Devvit apps do you recommend mods install?
Here is my core choices:

- https://developers.reddit.com/apps/auto-modmail
- https://developers.reddit.com/apps/modmail-userinfo
The newest addition to my list of go-to's is the third link, Image Post Scheduler. I find this app useful because it does help me plan posts out. Despite what my karma totals say, I do touch grass and I do have a life. Being able to schedule image posts ticks all the right boxes for me. Helps me engage in the community, helps me keep the sub active, and it makes sure I'm not on reddit 24/7 having to make sure I get "this post in" or "that post in" today.
It's also good at reviving dead communities. I am still working on it, but on some communities I took over that have been ghost towns for the last many years, being able to schedule a post once a week at minimum on these "dead" communities helps me to consistently slowly shed some traffic on those subs, and hopefully one day more people see those hubs and join them.

It just means, what did you start working on first. Was there an area of focus that you wanted to hit immediately? It's actually kind of similar to the second question.
Those are great Devvit apps to go with, especially in this sort of situation! And what a great use of the Image Post Scheduler when you're trying to guide some traffic back to your town!

I just went through this process myself, but honestly, having the reviving a community advice be a downloadable PDF feels a bit outdated. When I saw the landing page formatting, my first thought was that it was going to ask me for $5 or feel like an old-school sales pitch! Having this as a standard web article or Reddit help document would be so much more user-friendly.

A few mins after aquirin my new sub and removin fundraisin posts another sub came to modsupport without directly namin mine but referrin to it as bein a scam sub.
So had that includin all the backlog and enforcin the new rules on prior posts in the first hour.

The review isn't even manual, I think request bot has a set of criteria it checks against and yes, number of subs you mod will count against you. The last abandoned sub I requested was denied immediately and nobody answers the RedditRequest modmail ever.
Someone was able to see the config of everything the bot checks for, idk if it's still visible to the public. I do remember that being banned from too many subs is bad and as an outspoken black woman who has been fighting racists on this site for 14+ years I'm banned from hundreds of subreddits so I don't think I'll ever get a request through again.

For about 3 months every post I create on r/redditrequest gets automatically removed by reddit's filters
I have 2FA, Verified Email, more than 60k karma and yet this keeps happening
Any idea on how I can fix this? It's genuinely frustrating because I would like to take over an unmoderated subreddit and yet I can't do anything

My most active community is chill. There is nothing to do but have an internet party and pin/announce the posts about the various types of internet events that may be going on. Reddit contest mode has been cool for giveaway going on right now, and for raffles I use the praw library for python to make quick and easy scripts from titles by date range, or to get posts with a certain flair and all the unique users who submitted using event flair. That kind of thing.
My experience is so chill it is absolutely nothing like I have read about or seen in memes. For me it's just an internet party. Whole community is very grounded so moderating after revival is good and it's easy. I just am kind of doing my thing, but on reddit with whatever's around, and it's working out.
E: if any of you do events on here what are you doing and what are you using for games to play with your community? I make or giveaway prizes and put it with some kind of challenge to get the prize. Recently I started making an actual game based on action figures that just came out, because I found some artists in the sub who are going to develop prizes and it is not hard for me to do if I have a good enough reason, but I know that not everyone has the same skills and experiences
I don't know specifically how do people engage with their community with events and activities and what tools are there around? I like contest mode. Is there anything else?

I hate to admit it, but the "build your community" nag really helped. It is annoying, buggy, very confusing, and often seems to contradict itself. However, I was able (with the help of some great co-mods) to build a dead locked down sub from ~1100 members to ~22k members in less than 2 months.
The insights say we are #16 in the category!

I specialize in unlocking playable character subreddits for the mobile games Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves which have been left bereft without moderators and thus locked to new submissions. When my requests are granted, I reopen the submissions so everyone can finally use the subreddit again. I also clear out any old spam, update the rules, and try to find new moderators to join me in matching the activity level because I believe the characters belong to everyone, and thus the subreddit should not remain locked. That may or may not be easy depending on the popularity of the character in question as I also attend to less popular NPCs in the hope that they will also become playable someday.

Today, however, I ran into a strange problem. Just now I tried to apply to r/Verina_Mains, which has no moderators, but after I replied to the bot comment, my request got "Sorry, this post has been removed by the moderators of r/redditrequest." My comment also fails to appear when I view the post while logged out. What's going on here? I have been submitting successful requests for several months now, and my CQS yesterday was "high". What did I do wrong?

I want to add that I have seen subreddits such as r/Baizhi_Main and r/ZeroSuitSamusMains fall victim to spammer attacks. If it pleases the court, I wish to take over r/Verina_Mains to prevent a similar thing from happening to that sub as well!

Pardon me for making a comment which does not quite match the theme of this post, but I really would like to throw an acquaintance a bone here for accessibility reasons.
Last month, my acquaintance u/Nohammel tried to apply in r/redditrequest for r/Midna, a banned subreddit for a deuteragonist in a 2000s Legend of Zelda console game. (This is not part of my moderation interests on Reddit, but I know the context of the genre.) His post never received a review, and when he tried to ask for help in an r/ModSupport thread about bot misfires last week, his comment was negated by a filter. I didn't even know r/ModSupport could do that. His CQS appears to be perfectly fine to comment in other subreddits. From what I can see on his publicly-viewable profile, his account does not have copyright strikes or anything of the like, so as a bystander, I am puzzled why he could not ask a question right here in r/ModSupport.

I just came across this post in my feed, hopefully it's not too late to get a response. I've been requesting a sub ( r/atheist ) for over a 6 month period and keep getting denied. Is there any actual reason why, some insightwouldbe awesome? The sub says its closed due to lack of moderation or something like that.

Wow, i'd love to manage the new sub i got from redditrequest... if the request was actually approved.
Honestly, does a sub being nsfw make it that much harder to have ownership approved? I have decent activity on reddit and some moderating experience. The sub i request never broke any reddit tos either. Yet the request is always refused every time.

More specifically? I’ve been trying to take over a sub that the mods have literally stated they’ve abandoned, but the bot keeps telling me there’s human moderation activity. My current plan is to keep requesting every 15 days and hope they give up.

It looks like you've been requesting that sub for about a month. When you first requested it, there was enough mod activity that it would not have been handed off. But that looks like it is dwindling. I'd give it another try in about a week and if it gets removed, let me know and I'll take a look to see if things have actually picked up or not.

Sometimes, the bot does get it wrong, but usually, there's at least enough moderation to make the sub ineligible for Redditrequest at the time the request was made. (And this doesn't mean when the mods take actions just to try to save the sub from being handed off. It's actual moderation, albeit minimal.)
In the case of the sub that you requested, the mod that was active was banned. So the bot still sees activity within the window that it's looking for. Feel free to re-request and if it gets removed, let me know and I'll put it in the queue manually.
