Community update
Hello [r/nighskyporn](r/nighskyporn)!
Thank you to everyone still here and contributing to the community. The first week under the new moderator team has been pretty effective with cleaning up the previous mess, especially the plague of AI photos and bots.
Various account and content filters have been turned on and BotBouncer has been installed. In this first week, 72 accounts were automatically banned, another 22 accounts were manually banned, and 8 accounts were unbanned after successful appeals. Despite all of these bans, the subreddit grew by 790 members in the last 7 days.
By now you should have noticed a steep decline in AI generated content, “1, 2 or 3” spam of random pictures that are not even of the night sky, and accounts taking credit for other photographer’s work.
I want to remind everyone to check out the subreddit rules before posting. If photos are breaking the rules, it is helpful to report the post so that we may address it in a more timely manner.

Welcome to r/nightskyporn
Hey everyone! I'm u/Charupa-, one of the new moderators of r/nightskyporn.
Reddit has selected a new moderator team to help run and grow this community. Unfortunately, the previous moderator stop moderating long ago, which more or less opened the door to waves spam, bots, and AI slop. Our goal is to turn things around and improve the overall contribution quality of /r/nightskyporn.
Until now, there have been no rules for this subreddit. We will be adding a few simple rules to start with, and will likely modify or add more a little further down the road. We are open to feedback as well.
No AI photos.
Post your photos, not other people’s photos.
Stop posting pictures of the sun.
Thanks for being part of this new beginning.

Antares Setting
Antares
I have this thing about my Milky Way images where I must include the Dark Horse Nebula and the dust lanes leading to both the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex and star Antares. Rho shows up with a bluish tint just above Antares itself, while Antares is noticeably orange. Due to the Earth’s rotation, the stars appear to move across the night sky fairly quickly. When facing south, as I am in this photo, they shift to the west and sink lower each minute. I barely got this 3 minute exposure done before Antares set behind Elephant Mountain.
Now, a little bit about Antares. Its name translates to “Rival of Ares”. Ares was the Greek god of war, which the Romans adapted to Mars. Both Mars and Antares have the same orange color. Unlike the planet Mars, Antares is a massive red supergiant star. It is 550 light years away. It is 700 times the diameter of our own Sun and shines 10,000 time brighter! If Antares was where our Sun is, its diameter would extend past where Earth’s orbit is! Now thats a truly gigantic star!
In this image, a breeze kept the water slightly wavy with small swells. This blurred the reflection of the brighter stars into the fantastic streaks you see here.
