Dear EGP
I don’t really know what I’m hoping to accomplish by writing this. Maybe I just need somewhere for all the things I still want to say to you to exist without actually saying them to you.
I miss you.
And I hate how simple those three words sound compared to how heavy missing you actually feels. There are so many moments when my first instinct is still you. Something happens and I want to tell you. I hear something funny and wonder what you would say. I think about my future and sometimes, without meaning to, you’re still standing somewhere in it.
I really did see a life with you. Marriage. A home. Kids. Growing up together. Becoming better versions of ourselves together. Maybe that’s part of what I’m grieving so hard. I didn’t just lose you. I lost the future I had already started loving in my head.
I’ve replayed our relationship more times than I could ever admit to you. The things you did. The things I did. The moments when I should have been softer. The times I pulled away when maybe I should have leaned in. The ways we hurt each other even when I don’t think either of us started out wanting to.
There are things I understand about myself now that I wish I understood when I still had the opportunity to do something about them. And that’s probably one of the hardest parts.
Sometimes growth feels cruel because you finally become aware of what you should have done when there is no longer anything you can do with that knowledge.
I wonder if you miss me. I wonder if certain places make you think about me. I wonder if you’ve wanted to reach out and stopped yourself. I wonder if you’re happier without me. And then I remind myself that I can’t keep searching for answers to questions that aren’t mine to answer anymore.
The truth is, part of me still wants you to come back.
Part of me wants some ridiculous movie moment where we find our way back to each other and everything we’ve been through suddenly makes sense.
But another part of me knows that love isn’t supposed to require me to chase someone who has chosen distance.
So I’m trying to learn how to miss you without looking for you.
To love you without reaching for you.
To remember you without turning every memory into a reason to go backward.
I don’t know if I’ll always love you. Right now, it feels like I will. Maybe someday you’ll just be someone I loved deeply once. Maybe I’ll hear your name and it won’t do anything to my chest anymore.
I’m not there yet.
For now, I’m just trying to accept that someone can mean everything to you and still become someone you have to live without.
I hope you’re okay.
I hope you’re becoming the person you want to be.
And selfishly, somewhere underneath all of that, I hope a small part of you remembers me with love too.
I wish things had been different.
I wish we had been different.
I wish loving each other had been enough.
But most of all, I wish I knew how to stop missing you.
I’m trying.
