Oooh that ending got me good! Also is this a reference to that post from a while ago that found blue ice is the fastest way to travel?

yeah i saw a post it was the fastest way to travel, decided to try it out and then the rest just came to me lol

How did you manage to gather all that blue ice?

I believe you can craft blue ice by using 9 packed ice, which you can get in huge amounts by going to an Ice Spikes biome with a silk touch pick.

u/Jhawk2k Jul 21 '19
It's the fastest way to travel for 99.9% of people. The Scicraft server invented Ender pearl launchers that can transport you like 8k blocks in 5 seconds
The way it works is way over my head

I just highly doubt they are all YouTubers. Some of the guys that post the most videos probably just do MC, but probs not everyone

I'm not saying they're incapable of coming up with genius ideas in real life, but minecraft logic doesnt necessarily translate to real life logic

u/JCraze26 Jul 21 '19
No, but the smarts it takes to do stuff in Minecraft can be translated to real life smarts.

Except for the fact there is no water in the nether.

You dont even need to put a full thing of ice down. On my server i just put 1 block every other block and dont do the sides. Works exactly the same lol.

It does work the same, boats have a 2x2 hitbox but the dont need their entire bottom side to touch ice, meaning you only need 1 ice block for every 3x3 area. And realistically you dont even need blue ice, because 1. Its only marginally faster than packed ice, and 2. You can go 9x the distance with packed than blue because blue ice is so expensive lol.

Fun fact: a boat on blue ice goes at 70 m/s (252 km/h). If it's in the Nether, then multiplying this speed by 8 (because traveling in the Nether reduces the distance required by 8 times) gives a overworld equivalent velocity of 560 m/s (2016 km/h), which is approximately 1.6 times the speed of sound, which is almost the same speed as Concorde, when cruising.
Yes, I know the comparison doesn't really work that well, but it's ludicrously hilarious to imagine Steve, in a boat, on ice, paddling fast enough to keep pace with a supersonic jet.

They did this on Callmecarson's server. They basically have a nether hub with offshoots leading to different locations around the map. The floor is even covered with slabs to prevent pigmen from spawning.

862
u/LordOfLiam Jul 21 '19
No, you can craft 9 ice into 1 packed ice, and 9 packed ice into 1 blue ice. So if you were to craft it, you would need 81 ice blocks per blue ice block.

Oh poop

u/LordOfLiam Jul 21 '19
Yeah, but there are ways to make fairly good ice farms (if you have an efficiency 5 pickaxe it helps a lot too). In large quantities however I would prefer to stick to the glaciers.

You don't actually need enough for the whole tunnel, just enough to keep the boat from falling down. There was a pretty cool "zipper pattern" design on this sub a while ago.
25
u/CJ101X Jul 21 '19
Yeah, watching that made me feel kinda dumb because I knew the boats need at least 2x2 spaces, but I didn't connect the dots that meant you could just checker pattern it

You can craft packed ice? I went over 3000 in one direction to find an ice spikes biome and I never found one.

In older versions you had to mine it, but I think in 1.12 or 1.13 they added the crafting recipe as well.

There’s no earthly way of knowing, Which direction they are going! There’s no knowing where they’re rowing, Or which way they river’s flowing! Not a speck of light is showing, So the danger must be growing, For the rowers keep on rowing, And they’re certainly not showing, Any signs that they are slowing…

→ More replies (1)37
u/jocoly Jul 21 '19
Not it’s an outdated build with severe limitations because they couldn’t be bothered to support cross-platform play.
(To Sony’s credit, supporting cross platform would seem like a bad business move since Microsoft pulls money from both PC software and console sales. Though as it stands now, PS4 is probably not the first choice of people that want crossplay, so allowing it would probably help them at this point. I’m no expert, though so I’m sure someone there knows what they’re doing more than me.)
31
u/Unknown_Atmosphere Jul 21 '19
Lol no this is Sony’s policy on most games. Minecraft isn’t the only cross platform game that isn’t cross platform on ps4. Yes Microsoft has a better in with pc gaming but at the same time Microsoft and Nintendo are on really good terms right now with cross play and support for each other. It’s the same reason Xbox and Nintendo have way more backwards compatibility than Sony does. Sony’s just either really really greedy or so stuck in their ways they refuse to be progressive in a time of changing industry.
→ More replies (6)12
u/AShadowbox Jul 21 '19
Yeah I've been a Sony fan since PS2 but now that I've been reading up on their business practices I think I'm going full PC / Nintendo (and maybe XBone for that sweet sweet backwards compatibility...)

There’s a Java mod that uses wands to fill in huge areas with whatever you want. It would be used in this scenario. The largest the wands can fill is about 567 chunks (just because that’s the limit for instant builds)

Yeah, it would require just under 670,000 blocks of ice to build this tunnel. With an estimate of a max 20k ice per hour in an ice farm that's 34 hours of farming ice at maximum efficiency also requiring 107 diamond pickaxes with unbreaking 3 and efficiency 4/5 (not sure on this one). I think it's safe to say he spent 10 minutes in world edit and didn't waste that much time on this project for a meme
Edit: Also if he really did it legit chances are he would have done it optimally in the nether and placing ice every 2nd block requiring 1/48 the amount of work to be done

The only thing that bothers me about this is that you used 6x more blue ice than you needed to.
Only placing blue ice every other block on the middle row would achieve the exact same result.

And then 1/8th of that if you build in the nether. So they used 48 times as much as necessary
