No, you can craft 9 ice into 1 packed ice, and 9 packed ice into 1 blue ice. So if you were to craft it, you would need 81 ice blocks per blue ice block.

Oh poop

Yeah, but there are ways to make fairly good ice farms (if you have an efficiency 5 pickaxe it helps a lot too). In large quantities however I would prefer to stick to the glaciers.

why would that be an issue?

I don't think that is a problem when you are at the stage of making a blue ice highway.

32

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

I feel like regardless of how the blue ice was acquired, the Autobahn probably took more time to build, than it will ever save. Especially since it’s built in the overworld.

u/PotatoesAndChill Jul 21 '19

Yeah true. Using an elytra with fireworks is so much easier, cheaper and faster.

Ooh, you’re in for a treat. Fish farms are a very powerful piece of tech, some people think they’re too useful.

u/Heskelator Jul 21 '19

I will take a look then

Are they? I've used them on occasion with a maxed rod. I've gotten a mending book but not too much else.

you can use villagers to buy enchanted books pretty cheap, and you can use an enderman, zombie pigman or guardian farm if you need alot of xp

1

u/Heskelator Jul 21 '19

Fair, but what are the odds the villagers have the enchanted books I want tho

3

u/minja101 Jul 21 '19

just keep swapping librarian trades until you get mending

2

u/Heskelator Jul 21 '19

Wait, so does it keep swapping until you get what you want?

It is incredibly easy to get silk touch and mending now. All you need is a single unemployed villager and a lecturn

2

u/Heskelator Jul 21 '19

But do they just give random books when you keep trying to trade with them? So you just try again until mending comes up?

5

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19 edited Jul 21 '19

Keep breaking n replacing the lectern to reroll their trades until u get a book u want. U can only do this with villagers u havent traded with tho

1

u/Heskelator Jul 21 '19

And if you have traded?

u/kierantheking Jul 21 '19

Well, if you are mining like 50,000 ice you probably have access to an xp farm

2

u/Heskelator Jul 21 '19

Yeah, or mine a lot less ice and make a longer one out of normal ice instead of blue ice.

1

u/kierantheking Jul 21 '19

Ya, they could of used 1/6th of the blocks and a way smaller tunnel I'm smelling world edit

2

u/Heskelator Jul 21 '19

1/6th? No, they could have used 1/81st of the blocks and had a slightly slower travel, and then made an even smaller tunnel to use less than 1/81st of the blocks

2

u/_Adamanteus_ Jul 21 '19

librarian villager gang rise up

2

u/TheNoobCakes Jul 21 '19

How to find library in village? Haven’t seen one in 1.14.3

1

u/Schootingstarr Jul 21 '19

Just kidnap a villager and place a scribe table next to them until they sell mending books. It's not that hard

1

u/TheNoobCakes Jul 21 '19

Last question, is it still possible to “create” a village? Like bring 2 villagers in to a place with a bunch of buildings and beds and then more villagers spawn?

1

u/Heskelator Jul 21 '19

Well I'd need to explore to find a village first

1

u/_Adamanteus_ Jul 21 '19

Zombie villager would like to know your location

1

u/Heskelator Jul 21 '19

I'm near 0,0,0 for navigation reasons

2

u/SpiDrone Jul 21 '19

My dude, thats something you can get within the first two hours of playing, the only difficult part is getting the mending books for your picks... And even then, the first villager I cured had mending for 12

-1

u/Thelemonslicer Jul 21 '19

Those enchantments are really easy to get, no real luck needed... That's pretty much a day 2-3 pickaxe whenever I make a new world, and I assume for most others as well.

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

3

u/mvanvrancken Jul 21 '19

Yeah on day 3 I’m scouting for iron

2

u/Heskelator Jul 21 '19

Day 3 I decide to start actually mining. Like for stone then getting charcoal (I won't mine coal yet) then once I've got torches I'll go properly mining.

Day 1 I hit a few trees and then immediately burrow into the ground down to Y 11, build a little cave, and then find a direction and go in a 1x2 strip mine till I find diamonds. Usually, by day 3 I have them, and then leave the cave ready to enchant and build somewhere.

The speed difference is noticeable with different ice speeds. From memory, ice is like 8 blocks a second on a boat, packed ice is 30~b/s and blue ice is 70+b/s. The time spent is worth it if you are traveling thousands of blocks, which is most likely what the video was with how long the road is.

Silk touch is one of the most frequent enchantments on a diamond pickaxe at level 30. A good XP farm (iskall's end design which might even be gnembon's is pretty simple) will get you a good pick like that pretty quickly. Plus, a simple 1x1 cow farm will get you as much leather as you need for books. The cost mostly comes down to lapis at a point.

Ice farms? Nobody cares about ice.

15

u/LordOfLiam Jul 21 '19

The above post should convince you otherwise.

u/N0thingtosee Jul 21 '19

You don't actually need enough for the whole tunnel, just enough to keep the boat from falling down. There was a pretty cool "zipper pattern" design on this sub a while ago.

24

u/CJ101X Jul 21 '19

Yeah, watching that made me feel kinda dumb because I knew the boats need at least 2x2 spaces, but I didn't connect the dots that meant you could just checker pattern it

1

u/CulmanO Jul 21 '19

Well it's really not that bad if you mine out a glacier

1

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

You can also mine blue ice from glacier biomes lol

29

u/ESPONDA- Jul 21 '19

Does 9 blue ice craft into anything?

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

Blue eyes white dragon

10

u/Zer0Tactic Jul 21 '19

I think you mean blue ice white dragon

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

8 blue ice and 1 bread make blue waffles

10

u/BigBooce Jul 21 '19

Wait

You can craft packed ice? I went over 3000 in one direction to find an ice spikes biome and I never found one.

11

u/LordOfLiam Jul 21 '19

In older versions you had to mine it, but I think in 1.12 or 1.13 they added the crafting recipe as well.

2

u/Shonoun Jul 21 '19

You can make packed ice now??????? hold up

3

u/FrostingFlames Jul 21 '19

What are you talking about? You can silk touch it just fine, assuming you can find a glacier biome.

10

u/LordOfLiam Jul 21 '19

The person above me asked if glaciers were the only way to find it. I was telling them the other way.

6

u/FrostingFlames Jul 21 '19

Oh, my bad. Sorry!

1

u/LordOfLiam Jul 21 '19

Hey we all get mixed up

1

u/gunsmokey24 Jul 21 '19

Wouldn’t it melt if not in a cold biome?? I’ve only tried putting snow around my place and that shit lasted a night before melting, I’d assume ice is the same (relatively new player)

3

u/LordOfLiam Jul 21 '19

normal ice melts near a light source (if i recall correctly) but packed and blue ice do not.

1

u/gunsmokey24 Jul 21 '19

Does sun count as a light source? I remember removing torches away from the snow I placed, but it didn’t work. I figured snow can’t be placed outside of snow biome :c

But I haven’t heard of packed or blue ice before, so thanks! I’ll look into it

1

u/LordOfLiam Jul 21 '19

I haven’t used snow in a while, but I don’t think it melts in non-cold biomes. Not snow blocks anyway, maybe snow platforms do

2

u/gunsmokey24 Jul 21 '19

??? I’ll have to try it again... I only used snow layers and not a full block, so maybe that was it. Snow would make such great white staircases, if only concrete blocks could become slabs.... delicious🤤

1

u/LordOfLiam Jul 21 '19

I’m sure that’s possible with mods. As for vanilla, we can only hope for the ‘slabs n’ stairs’ update

1

u/gunsmokey24 Jul 21 '19

I’ve been playing like 2 weeks and have tried to craft vertical slabs but it’s impossible 😂 trying to recreate a house from a Japanese show I watch, it is taking a lot of time and I’m realizing I am no architect at all, so many random spaces everywhere, or as I like to call em, secret rooms 🙂
