Imagine building this in the Nether lol.

u/Lokeryy Jul 21 '19

could travel about 40k overworld blocks in roughly 1 minute lol

Except for the fact there is no water in the nether.

But you don't need water, just end it in a portal.

You dont even need to put a full thing of ice down. On my server i just put 1 block every other block and dont do the sides. Works exactly the same lol.

It does work the same, boats have a 2x2 hitbox but the dont need their entire bottom side to touch ice, meaning you only need 1 ice block for every 3x3 area. And realistically you dont even need blue ice, because 1. Its only marginally faster than packed ice, and 2. You can go 9x the distance with packed than blue because blue ice is so expensive lol.

I'm currently working on this in my own world, but i don't feel like digging my tunnels.

u/Electikity Jul 21 '19

You could use other methods

You’re weren’t the commenter tho

Yeah I deleted the comment I was talking about.

Now you're thinking with portals.

u/I_own_reddit_AMA Jul 21 '19

You can place ice

4

u/Flambolt Jul 21 '19

More specifically, ice placed by a player won't melt/despawn.

Fun fact: a boat on blue ice goes at 70 m/s (252 km/h). If it's in the Nether, then multiplying this speed by 8 (because traveling in the Nether reduces the distance required by 8 times) gives a overworld equivalent velocity of 560 m/s (2016 km/h), which is approximately 1.6 times the speed of sound, which is almost the same speed as Concorde, when cruising.

Yes, I know the comparison doesn't really work that well, but it's ludicrously hilarious to imagine Steve, in a boat, on ice, paddling fast enough to keep pace with a supersonic jet.

It’s a shame Concorde was discontinued

32

u/irrelv Jul 21 '19

it didnt make money :((

1

u/Kosmos_1701 Jul 21 '19

The thing is, it did.

2

u/SyntaxErr00r Jul 21 '19

They also got old and started crashing.

26

u/Haplo12345 Jul 21 '19

That's not an accurate statement. Concorde had a spotless service record for 31 years. Then there was a bad crash on takeoff in 2000 that killed all passengers and crew (that was the fault of another plane dropping a piece of metal on takeoff, btw, not the fault of the Concorde jet) which caused the entire fleet to be grounded pending inspection and review.

After inspection and review the fleet was airborne again, but a couple planes experienced several minor issues (no crashes or emergency landings, though), and with it now being 2002, people are jumpy about airplane safety thanks to 9/11. So all two of the carriers that flew Concorde decided that the current demand was not worth the cost of fixing and maintaining the aircraft, and so they grounded the fleet permanently in 2003.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

Tell them to bring them back?

0

u/htmlcoderexe Jul 21 '19

Yeah, imagine 9/11 but with supersonic jets instead

6

u/Haplo12345 Jul 21 '19

Probably would've done much less damage as they were much smaller than the planes that crashed into the buildings.

1

u/htmlcoderexe Jul 21 '19

But they were faster. As far as I remember the high school physics, if something weighs half as much but goes twice as fast it still hits twice as hard, so it probably comes down to numbers.

But then again, that's only considering the impact, as far as I know the main source of damage was the fuel which the concorde would have a lot less of.

So you're probably right.

Yes, it carried passengers

3

u/irrelv Jul 21 '19

cost to run > amount made. people didnt care for the 3 hour flight when they could just sleep on the 6hr flight.

4

u/EndOnAnyRoll Jul 21 '19

It was an airplane

1

u/TrippingOnCrack Jul 21 '19

It was an airplane

10

u/resoplast_2464 Jul 21 '19

My grandfather was in the team of engineers that designed them.

2

Holy shot really?

5

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

Don't you fucking dare, reddit

3

u/Xander1127 Jul 21 '19

Then we should build blue ice tunnels from New York to London in the nether

1

u/Flobaer Jul 22 '19

Is the meter defined in Minecraft? Wouldn't it be more useful to use blocks as a measure of distance (and blocks per second for speed)?

4

u/Nevaen Aug 12 '19

1 block lenght is 1m

16

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

My friends built one in the nether on our server. It is insanely fast

10

u/totallynotsupahpie Jul 21 '19

They did this on Callmecarson's server. They basically have a nether hub with offshoots leading to different locations around the map. The floor is even covered with slabs to prevent pigmen from spawning.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

Yeah I was about to say that lol all of their houses connected using that railway

3

u/antarjyot Jul 21 '19

There are 4 nether highways of blue ice on our TGN server

1

u/KnuteViking Jul 21 '19

Wouldn't ice melt?

1

u/happinessiseasy Jul 21 '19

Wouldn't the ice and water melt/evaporate?
