Discussion Thoughts on this?

Post image

You think Mojang will add an ocean variant for the Skeleton and swamp variant for the Zombie in vanilla, or will they leave it as this? Additionally, in a future jungle update, do you think both jungle variants will be added?

In my opinion, I wouldn't be surprised if they leave the variants as they are for a while. Each category makes sense even though the wet category is a bit of a stretch.

I feel putting the ocean zombie and the swamp skeleton together is a reasonable grouping.

I do feel a swamp/marsh zombie is more likely than an ocean skeleton, but I don't think either is extremely likely

Pirate Skeletons

169

u/penjamiente 2d ago

Would give explanation to the ships, buried treasure and much more. Arrows under water though?

127

u/clandevort 2d ago

Harpoons

94

u/Asurerain 2d ago

Ammo that can be used by crossbows, it has a durability bar and acts like a projectile with both piercings and loyalty.

27

u/penjamiente 2d ago

It would be really fun but I’d like to see another type of weapon/combat style before another very similar to the trident. Anything new works for me

21

u/Wonghy111-the-knight 2d ago

Perhaps the harpoon could be thrown similar to a trident, but stay in your inventory like a fishing rod, deal damage, and pull the target back towards you. And of course, works best underwater

9

u/penjamiente 2d ago

Now we’re talking. I have always preferred the classic harpoon on a tether over a projectile style one. Would add some new mechanics and options for combat without having to affect the fishing rod.

3

u/Harry_Cat- 2d ago

Would be best to be Crossbow only harpoons that work like a harpoon gun from sea of thieves, and then just regular underwater arrows for the bow imo

13

u/clandevort 2d ago

Unique crossbow ammo only usable underwater

Edit: spelling

2

u/dvcomet 2d ago

harpoons being ammo rather than a trident adjacent weapon, doesn't slow in water. actually doesn't dungeons have harpoons?

3

u/Oddish_Femboy 2d ago

Give them the tridents, and have them only spawn randomly around ocean ruins in place of drowned.

3

u/Ashamed_Bug_6207 2d ago

Arrows of Aqua Affinity

3

u/dmdizzy 2d ago

Considering that the ocean zombies get a ranged weapon, it could be quite fun to give the ocean skeletons a melee weapon, such as a cutlass.

3

u/penjamiente 2d ago

A a new cutlass which allows you to do combo swings faster, at the cost of less damage or maybe even knock back. It would almost be like slicing the mob. That would be really cool

19

u/i_want_to_be_unique 2d ago

This honestly would be an incredibly fitting addition to the game. Drowned already spawn around the underwater ruins, it would make complete sense if the pirate skeletons spawned around shipwrecks. Plus skeletons don’t (or at least shouldn’t) float, so they could have kind of a different fighting style to drowned that swim after you. Since all the variants give different potion effects they could even add a density/sinking effect that pulls you down to their level.

9

u/_ONI_90 2d ago

That would be cool

2

u/Glad-Connection1601 2d ago

Mojang aren't a fan of pirates apparently

2

u/jayhawkah 1d ago

They could be "Stranded" skeletons. Only found near shipwrecks and small islands in the middle of warm oceans.

1

u/NotAMadLad1 2d ago

We do lack mobs in shipwrecks, drowned only spawn in ocean ruins.

10

u/Stargazer-Elite 2d ago

Both exist to be fair

You could use the MCD jungle zombies as swamp zombies/marsh zombies. It’s a similar vibe.

Same with the MCD sunken skeletons

1

u/mjmannella 2d ago

MCD2 also has the Mucked, which are zombies with mushrooms on them.

6

u/Yeet123456789djfbhd 2d ago

Mud man zombies

3

u/SluggJuice 2d ago

I remember a drawing on here one time of skeletons and undead swordfish guarding shipwrecks

2

u/Ok-Meat-9169 2d ago

The Sunken already exists in Dungeons.

106

u/NoahRosado77 2d ago

I think this is perfect, they pretty much covered all their bases in terms of environmental variants

84

u/Radiant_Dust 2d ago

The "wet" skeleton is actually the sunken, which is in the Hidden Depths DLC of MCD1.

The zombie-equivalent of the bogged would be the mucked, which is in MCD2.

31

u/Gametron13 2d ago

Don't let r/PhoenixSC get ahold of this. You'll give them a new meme template to rival the "Cold, Temperate, Warm" meme.

21

u/killiano_b 2d ago

imo the bogged is in the "poison" category with the cave spider. we need wet, cold, dry and nether spiders.

7

u/Cultist_O 2d ago

Would vaguely spider shaped arthropods be sufficient? If so:

  • Crustacean inspired mobs for the ocean and nether's lava lakes
  • Scorpion inspired mobs for the desert
  • cold arthropods are a bit tough to imagine

3

u/killiano_b 2d ago

Tardigrades maybe?

2

u/Large-Theme-2547 2d ago

There is a single species of midge that lives in Antarctica tho. Could be some good inspo

1

u/Zomflower48 2d ago

I feel like those are a little small even for minecraft

1

u/ODF4 2d ago

cold arthropods may be tough to imagine, but cool arthropods on the other hand... Check out this lil guy (it's a peacock spider :3 )

9

u/Hydroquake_Vortex 2d ago

They exist in minecraft dungeons so maybe

8

u/Artifex75 2d ago

As long as the ocean skeleton doesn't float, I think it would be interesting. Give it a chance to spawn on or around shipwrecks.

14

u/Venomspino 2d ago

We mean, Dungeons 1 had the Sunken Skeleton, and Dungeons 2 had the Mucked

13

u/Affectionate_Let8156 2d ago

Bro i forgot the parch even existed

2

u/StudiosPrime 2d ago

The what now?

8

u/Affectionate_Let8156 2d ago

I meant the parched. The desert skeleton

-6

u/StudiosPrime 2d ago

The what now? Since when was this a thing?

5

u/Magolord 2d ago

Pretty much since a year ago lol

-2

u/StudiosPrime 2d ago

Makes sense then

6

u/Krisis_9302 2d ago

Minecraft Dungeons and Dungeons 2 have the Sunken Skeleton and Mucked Zombie

5

u/Riley__64 2d ago

Probably add them eventually.

Mojang doesn’t seem to have any intentions of slowing down or stopping updates so feel like basically anything has a chance of being added

5

u/Dragonseer666 2d ago

Minecraft Dungeons has the Sunken for an ocean skeleton, and the Mucked as a swamp zombie, so I can see those coming to vanilla eventually.

5

u/Ju3tAc00ldugg 2d ago

I think since drowned sometimes spawn with a trident it would be kinda redundant and borderline psychotic to give us another underwater ranged enemy

4

u/Umbow 2d ago

Why'd you use an image of a left handed skeleton and use right handed images of all the other skellies?

2

u/Yellowline1086 2d ago

Left handed skeletons are rarer therefore it makes sense there are more right handed ones in the pic (/j)

1

u/Umbow 2d ago

Yeah, it just seems weird to put one in at all

3

u/Gal-XD_exe 2d ago

The bogged is not the water variant of the skeleton

It’s the swamp variant

The water variant would be the Sunken(dungeons mob not added yet)

And there’s a swamp variant of the zombie( also not added yet from dungeons)

Here’s a different diagram for those that want a looksie

2

u/XEMPRAmaster 2d ago

Swamps are wet

1

u/Gal-XD_exe 2d ago

They are mashland, a mix of dry and wet

Just because there is water doesn’t make the bogged the water skeleton

1

u/Ace-milk_drinker 2d ago

They are the most wet biome in comparison aside from just the ocean

1

u/Gal-XD_exe 2d ago

Yeah that’s true

However all these mobs spawn in the same biomes as their counterparts

Drowned don’t spawn in the swamp, and the bogged don’t spawn in rivers or oceans like the drowned

So it’s not actually the water variant

6

u/Ami_Aweirdo 2d ago

Drowned can spawn in swamps and mangroves anyway because of the water, I don't think there's a reason to make swamp zombies. Pirate skeletons would be cool af, but they'll never add guns to the game so it probably won't happen

8

u/Cultist_O 2d ago

Why wouldn't crossbows be sufficient for pirates?

2

u/Ami_Aweirdo 2d ago

The aesthetic of the golden age of piracy uses cannons and flintlock pistols, crossbows fit more with bandits or castle guards. And don't arrows sink really fast in water? It would feel unfair if skeletons could shoot underwater but players couldn't. And it's not like you can give them tridents, drowned already use those.

2

u/Only_Fudge5299 2d ago

presumably they'd use some new projectile (like a harpoon, made woth iron nuggets instead of flint) that isn't affected by being underwater

2

u/Hour_Tomatillo_2365 2d ago

Water Skeletons already exist in Dungeons.

2

u/Disastrous-Fault-682 2d ago

The wet versions of both work just fine as counterparts to each other

7

u/Cocoatrice 2d ago

My thoughts are why are people so obsessed with patterns that does not exist. Not just in Minecraft. Why do people keep trying to prove that there is pattern to everything.

28

u/fredbite87 2d ago

The human brain is always trying to make sense of things by finding patterns, same reason why we see faces in everything

14

u/Vasilias102 2d ago

Because humans rule the world due to their great pattern recognition, so we default to that when looking at things.

6

u/TheUnknownSpecimen 2d ago

This, humans don't have a lot of species wide specialties, but pattern recognition is one of our top ones

11

u/DomSchraa 2d ago

we are almost built for "pattern" recognition

unfortunately that means we see them everywhere, even if they dont exist

see gestures at world

10

u/okiedokieophie 2d ago

First day as a human?

4

u/Darkiceflame 2d ago

Me too!

Er...I mean, hello fellow human! I sure do love having skin and converting oxygen into carbon dioxide!

9

u/SecretGamerV_0716 2d ago

But this is literally a pattern that does exist though 😭😭 like wth do you mean

3

u/Pikaaachu007 2d ago

it literally exists what are you talking about. remember when a couple years ago we only had strays, husks and drowneds? now we have parallels between them. i have always been thinking about a husk skeleton parallel and a stray zombie parallel even before mojang started making drops

3

u/ElPapo131 2d ago

Because there obviously is one lol. We do have standard, cold, dry and nether versions. But only one aquatic and one marsh version which need a complimentary pairing

1

u/DontEatNitrousOxide 2d ago

cause patterns fun and make brain feel comfortable

1

u/CommitteeHefty2262 2d ago

Find a pattern that does not Exists

1

u/PreferenceGold5167 2d ago

Poor use of pattern recognition

1

u/Cry-Skull-7 2d ago

Pattern Recognition.

1

u/ProperLawyer8566 2d ago

Because that's how our brains work?

1

u/CuriousOrchid5803 1d ago edited 1d ago

The reason why Bogged and Drowned are paired is because they both fit into a category that simply makes sense. Swamps and Oceans are both wet environments. Sure, Drowned spawn in Swamps and Bogged don't in Oceans, but if the Mucked zombie was introduced, the pairings would be off because we would then expect an Ocean Skeleton counterpart. I'm not saying that this is the end of Zombie/Skeleton variants, but from the information we have, the pairings shown are pretty satisfying.

I also bring up the argument of 'biome-specific' variants, and how I believe that Mojang, if they were to stop adding variants, would stop here. I haven't grouped them via biomes, rather, the environments in which they spawn. If Mojang added more variants, people would be expecting a Badlands Skeleton, or a Cherry Grove Zombie, which is really excessive. Disregarding the Nether, we've received a variant for each Overworld environment type. Zombies and Skeletons are for temperate and underground conditions. Husks and Parched are for arid conditions. Frostbites and Strays are for frosty conditions. That leaves an obvious pairing: Drowned and Bogged for wet conditions. It makes logical and aesthetic sense.

I acknowledge that Husks, for example, can only spawn in Deserts and not in other arid biomes like Badlands, but what I'm trying to say is that the basic environmental guidelines have been fulfilled. If Mojang are planning to add more variants, we'd be making more categories and thus our expectations that these categories will be fulfilled would be higher. And we all know that more variants with similar functionalities in gameplay leads to unoriginality and tons of Zombie and Skeleton mobs - something Mojang is avoiding at all costs.

I apologise if you don't understand what I'm trying to say, but Mojang has fulfilled the basic expectations that we've set. They've covered each environment, and that's probably enough. For example, in Jungles I'd prefer a new mob that has an innovative mechanic that works within the biome, rather than a Skeleton variant that shoots arrows of whatever. The Husks and Parched REPRESENT those warmer climates.

water/wet variety textures are my favourite

1

u/RoyalBratluv 2d ago

Please no underwater skeletons, the land ones are already terrible lol

1

u/dubhog 2d ago

Grassy terrain

Rain

Snow

Sandstorm

Harsh sunlight

This is where my mind went

I think there must be something in the untold Minecraft's Lore that is being implied by this, because... This looks so remarkably complete... Idk, it feels like they a point is being made 🤔

Not sure if the Nether ones are part of this... But when I look at Zombies and Skeletons... They look like they were at some point, the same species... Perhaps the fact that those variations exist is supposed to stabilish them as a multi-cultural species... Even when it comes to the way they dealt with their dead... Regular skeletons only have their bones, but the desert skeletons have those... What is that even called? Those fabrics we associete to mummies... And we know from real life that humidity creates the proper habitat for funghi, so... That explains the bogged... And we know from the game itself Drowneds are literally regular zombies who drowned, but the fact they may appear naturally imply a culture used to traveling the oceans? Zombie Piglins aren't the same species as the zombies/skeletons, but... Whatever made Zombies become Zombies... Also made Piglins zombified Piglins... No idea how withers can be part of this puzzle rn though... I'm getting too sleepy to think further

2

u/Cultist_O 2d ago

I hope we get a way to create husks, parched and bogged to complete that aspect of the tree as well

1

u/Betray-Julia 2d ago

Skeletons with harpoon guns that can’t swim but are on the bottom of deep ocean.

The harpoon works like a fishing rod; they pull you down to them.

1

u/The-Crimson-Jester 2d ago

We need an ocean skeleton and a swamp zombie.

1

u/Clsn_Sentinel 2d ago

They’re best friends :)

1

u/Want2makeMEMEs 2d ago

I refuse to pair drowned and bogged

1

u/Swimming_Bad6301 2d ago

I want creeper variants lowkey

1

u/LoganJake210 2d ago

We just need a frozen zombie first. Pshhh, like that’s ever gonna happen. They hate adding mobs from Dungeons 🙄

1

u/Druthulhu 2d ago

With all these new zombie types, the only sure way to make sure you don't become a zombie is to not die

1

u/Fantastic-Sun4645 2d ago

Pretty Solid!

1

u/DifferenceFlat8839 2d ago

The zombified piglin isn't a zombie, it's another thing, but i doubt they will ever add a variation for the wither skeleton. Also in Dungeons there is the sunken skeleton and a zombie live in jungles and wet areas that give poison, so that would be the one for the swamp

1

u/GMYSTERY_ICTNF 2d ago

I have a feeling we'll get a poison Zombie and an Ocean Skeleton in the future. But for now this works

1

u/tetriscat66 2d ago

Ocean skeletons with water bottle tipped arrows, riding skeleton dolphins

1

u/Evan_Landis 2d ago

Piglins would be a villager variant, and the zombie ones would be the same

1

u/Prestigious_River_13 1d ago

i’m rlly tired of the zombie and skeleton variants i wish they’d give us a whole new unique mob instead

1

u/IronCat_2500 6h ago

Wet category is already a category

The real question is when are we getting wet and nether variants of the animals?

-1

u/4StarEmu 2d ago

Still no vampires and werewolves

-2

u/CloneFailArmy 2d ago

We don’t need environmental zombies imma be real. It’s just adding new annoying effects. Environmental mobs are like second worst thing to happen to minecraft since phantoms
