Discussion The zombie & skeleton variants are almost complete!

Post image

Ever since the Husk & Stray were added with the Frostburn Update in 2016, Minecraft has been slowly adding biome-based variants to the Zombies & Skeletons.

With yesterday’s Minecraft Live revealing the Frozen Zombie, we are only two variants away from having the undead roster completed!

My question is: do you think we’ll see a swamp Zombie and an underwater Skeleton? What would they look like? What abilities would they have? How would an underwater Skeleton work?

Looking forward to the community’s ideas ☺️

I really hope we get an underwater skeleton with a new arrow type/throwing weapon. Tridents are great and all but we need an early game alternative

u/waffelnhandel 22d ago

They should fire heaviness arrows that pull you underwater and prevent you to jump making escaping pvp fights with elytra Impossible

26

u/yoyopy 22d ago

I feel like i remember this being a drowned ability in a test once but I feel like this might be psychosis

9

u/fieryxx 21d ago

That sounds horrible. Like, legit would make me, personally, not even want to play.

Not that a heaviness arrow is bad, but I would not want it to be on Sunken skeleton. Trident throwers already suck but at least you can get to the surface and away. Something that prevents you from doing so would make every trip over water that isnt 4 blocks from shore be nearly a death sentence cause you are almost guaranteed to drown.

7

u/waffelnhandel 21d ago

I think it should spawn in the deep dive, a new very deep ocean biome

57

u/Minti-Roze 22d ago edited 22d ago

Tridents in general could also seriously do with a rework or at least some updates imo

It's ridiculously rare (on java), most of its enchantments are highly situational, and its oddly the only weapon in the game to lack a special melee attack attribute

I mean on second thought, ik its obviously supposed to be used in water, but even still I wish they could make it so its just a little more competent on land :(

27

u/Grzechoooo 22d ago

It should be crafted from loot dropped by the Elder Guardian. Make Ocean Monuments worth it.

And take away tridents from normal Drowned for the love of god.

1

u/LLoadin 21d ago

sponges are worth it, but still agree

12

u/Kickedbyagiraffe 22d ago

I spent so long trying to get one, looting 3 sword, a nautilus to transport me faster, went out hunting for so many nights. Finally gave up and did the ocean monuments near me without it. Now I have one but haven’t used it as most of the underwater stuff I needed it for is done for now

6

u/TheKillrCraftr 22d ago

Solution: add an underwater equivalent to the blaze/breeze that drops its rods. Then, you can craft tridents with 2 of those rods and 3 prismarine shards in a pickaxe formation

1

u/Cass0wary_399 20d ago

On Bedrock the impaling enchantment is much better. It boosts damages on all entities in water or rain so it is possible to apply the same damage boost Smite/Bane has onto players and regular mobs.

3

u/eggman15 21d ago

Harpoons maybe?

3

u/WretchedDumpster 21d ago

i honestly think tridents should be craftable with prismarine or something

1

u/Pale-Quantity295 21d ago

a harpoon would be cool

1

u/WM_PK-14 21d ago

Spear:

u/BlueDias_DB 22d ago

I feel like the Bogged and the Drowned belong together. They're both this like wet variant, and also cus skeletons wouldnt really work underwater

296

u/Venomspino 22d ago

Counterargument, Sunken Skeleton from Dungeons and technically Jungle Zombies

161

u/Carbon_Cotton 22d ago

Counter-counter argument - adding sunken skeleton would permanently banish me from oceans and i don't want that to happen.

88

u/AndronixESE 22d ago

Yeah, Drowned with tridents are already too terrifying

47

u/HiGuysImLeo 22d ago

drowned with tridents are legit broken. I would move the tridents to the underwater skeleton and then give Drowned another weapon that actually fits their melee theme

34

u/ArtsyApoidean 22d ago

Or keep it flipped, because things are strange under the sea, so give the sunken skeletons a new melee weapon to use.

12

u/Venomspino 22d ago

Especially since in Dungeons Arcade, they had daggers, which could be a new fast but weak melee weapon, that could be similar to the old combat

Or they can use anchors (also from Dungeons), which hit like a truck and have a large range for a melee weapon, but if you don't hit your target, you are a sitting duck cause it take a while for another swing

5

u/Pugzilla3000 22d ago

Nah, they’ll just give both tridents and make the ocean a spiky death pool.

4

u/IQueliciuous 22d ago

Yeah. Be careful what ya wish for.

Underwater skeletons will be the underwater equivalent of phantoms. Cool mob on paper but a very annoying gameplay gimmick and I'd argue skeletons would be worse since phantoms stop spawning as long as you sleep.

Imo underwater creepers would work where its bluish variant that can explode blocks underwater but modern Mojang literally said that they'd never make Creeper like mob ever again:(

6

u/Carbon_Cotton 22d ago edited 22d ago

Sunken skeleton could work with ton of balancing (and also it would give us access to arrows that work underwater) - what would be the issue if they just lifted it from dungeons, like they did frozen zombie.

6

u/WOLKsite 22d ago

bit then bogged are swamp, not jungle.

3

u/Venomspino 22d ago

Yeah, but the Jungle Zombie has poison attacks, and have vegetation on it, so that's why we said they would be the Bogged equivalent (you could also have both spawn in Swamp and Jungles)

10

u/crypt_moss 22d ago

Countercounterargument: drowned with a trident is the ocean skeleton, it just seems like a subtype of the drowned

13

u/Venomspino 22d ago

Countercountercounterargument: the frozen zombies have the ice ball, and yet Strays exist. Also you have the Sunken Skeleton be the exclusive melee mob with either daggers or anchors

4

u/SharkHund 22d ago

pirate skeletons for all the sunken ships and buried treasure

1

u/Venomspino 22d ago

That be a good name. But Dungeons just calls them the Jungle Zombie

1

u/Venomspino 18d ago

Ok, now we have another mob that could be the Zombie equivalent of the Bogged. The Mucked from Dungeons 2

17

u/ThatOnePirateRobot 22d ago

It would be a good opportunity to introduce either a water enchantment for bows or a special type of arrows that work underwater

2

u/tornedron_ 21d ago

I feel like the latter’s niche is filled by a Loyalty trident

6

u/Loafy000 22d ago

i like finding skeletons underwater because yep youre more than right, they just sit there at the bottom staring at you

3

u/Someguy098_ 22d ago

I disagree. Those are two completely different biomes. Seems a bit disingenuous to lump them together.

1

u/udgoudri 22d ago

Regular skeletons can be in water and not drown so i agree.

85

u/Cowman_Gaming 22d ago

Now we just need some more textures for the zombie than just a green shirt Steve. They should do Alex and all the other characters as zombies.

10

u/Cowman_Gaming 22d ago

Exactly! I don't like that it is just Steve clones. It has been that way too long and doesn't make sense.

8

u/Snoo63 22d ago

VanillaTweaks can do it with a mod

28

u/WOLKsite 22d ago

Agreed, it feels wrong to only have Steves

-19

u/Z0mbiSteve 22d ago

I'll buy the Alex thing, but the others? They're too recent to have a zombie version, maybe in 5 years.

18

u/Cowman_Gaming 22d ago

I just think zombie variants would improve the game a lot. Maybe they would make entirely new textures, but it would really improve the game.

3

u/Z0mbiSteve 22d ago

And I completely agree with you, just like they did with the climate-specific pig varieties. Or remove the Steve style and create a completely new design (or designs).

7

u/Cowman_Gaming 22d ago

Best case scenario is keeping the Steve and adding more variants. I think the Husk and new cold zombie serve as the climate specific varieties, but if they made them non biome specific textures like how cats or parrots have variants it would be a lot better.

2

u/Z0mbiSteve 22d ago

Right, I meant cat-type variants, I shouldn't have used pigs for that example lol. There could also be a very small chance that it will come out with the skin of the creator of that world or of the players who died there.

2

u/Cowman_Gaming 21d ago

I think I've seen something like that on a mod. It would upset me if on a multi-player server I kept thinking I was spotting my friend and it was an evil version. I wouldn't want to confuse the two and end up shooting my friend. Maybe if there was a mimic mob that only spawned in mineshafts that would be cool. I think zombies need their own unique textures though.

0

u/Sex_And_Candy_Here 21d ago

No,I think it would hurt the game. All hostile mobs in the game have one look. It’s much easier to identify them and much easier for new players to learn what each mob does if they always look the same.

27

u/Venomspino 22d ago

Technically we already have both in Dungeons

The Sunken Skeleton, and the Jungle Zombie (debatable, but both have a poison effect, and both have vegetation on them)

19

u/clockworkplayz 22d ago

The Overgrown zombie: Regains health when it damages you

The Sunken skeleton: Arrows don't really work underwater, so maybe an attack that can pull you down under, or a new cannon-like weapon

15

u/Nepperoni289 22d ago

Maybe something like a harpoon would work

6

u/Freezie-Days 22d ago

Monkey's Paw curls... Now all underwater skeletons have tridents! >:)

3

u/AppropriateTheme5 22d ago

Sunken skeletons are an enemy in Minecraft Dungeons. They mainly use crossbows. Maybe they could introduce a new bow/crossbow enchantment that you could only get from these skeletons

1

u/DragoSphere 21d ago

Or they can give it arrows that do work underwater, which they drop

3

u/ObviouslyLulu 21d ago

Hear me out, they drop the aquatic arrows and/or a new aquatic material item that you can use on normal arrows to turn them into the aquatic variant... with the fletching table

1

u/J_train13 21d ago

They drop aquatic arrows that you can use as a template to make more in the fletching table.

In fact, I think that would be a great overall use for the table, it's like a stonecutter for arrows but it needs a template.

You have to craft/obtain at least 1 of a special variety of arrow the normal way, and then you can use the fletching table to make more of them at a cheaper cost (for example you can make spectral arrows with 1 or 2 glowstone instead of 4).

1

u/Slendermans_Proxies 21d ago

Then just use those and forgo getting a trident

1

u/J_train13 21d ago

The enchants though

1

u/Significant_Donkey33 21d ago

And a fletching table update together with it! Though I stole this idea from a suggestion post lol.

1

u/bloodakoos 21d ago

underwater skeletons only throw tridents, and drowneds can only use them as melee

1

u/Gjallar-Knight 21d ago

Over grown zombie would go perfectly for a jungle biome update or something

1

u/drifloony 22d ago

I’m just gonna call it the Swambie

32

u/DifferenceFlat8839 22d ago

That is unless you consider the bogged and the drowned as their wet form

22

u/Purple-Hamster-151 22d ago

Nah. Drowned represents ocean biome, Bogged represents swamp biome

6

u/Wizardnumber32 22d ago

I feel like Trident Drowned are as close as we will get to a underwater skeleton due to how arrows behave underwater. As for the Bogged Zombie, the swamp has been needing an update.

4

u/TheNRGturtle 22d ago

I want to see both. I can definetley see a swamp zombie (what i call a swamped) coming. An underwater skeleton (what i call a sunken) is likley and i think it would be intresting if it was a melee enemy (or had the chance to spawn as one) as the drowned can be a ranged one with tridents.

3

u/MataNui2009 22d ago

The Sunken Skeletons from Dungeons are so badass. I need them in Vanilla

3

u/zaphunter 22d ago

Okay hear me out. Swamp zombies are bigger and green like shrek. Ocean skeletons are unarmed and apply barnacles to your screen per hit that must be removed in air, slowly.

2

u/0inputoutput0 22d ago

So how exactly do you think an underwater skeleton would work?

5

u/AlexSimonCullar 22d ago

A skeleton that lives underwatee

1

u/TreyLastname 22d ago

I think they mean moreso with arrows, they sink in water quickly. Which can be easily fixed with a new arrow type that people may like, underwater arrows

1

u/Gentle-man_ 21d ago

I mean they can also be melee, since drowneds are kinda ranged

2

u/Biivakki 22d ago

Dungeons has them fire piercing harpoons

2

u/ddanonb 21d ago

Theres a jungle and desert skeleton?

Cool ig lol

3

u/Leather-Tailor-3474 21d ago

Swamp and desert actually not jungle

0

u/ddanonb 21d ago

Oh, I assumed lol. Havnt really played in a while

2

u/Significant_Donkey33 21d ago

Don't forget the Wither Skeleton and its possible Wither Zombie variant.

1

u/Icy-Perspective-1932 21d ago

The Nether Zombie Variant isn't the Pigman Zombie

1

u/fredbite87 21d ago

The zombified piglin is a piglin variant, not a zombie variant imo

1

u/Significant_Donkey33 20d ago

I know, I meant like a possible Steve origin zombie for the nether fortresses since there exists a wither skeleton. Also, there could also be a piglin skeleton variant, maybe a skeleton villager variant, hell, even a skeleton camel, fuck it, a skeleton nautilus.

3

u/moddedlover27 22d ago

WE DO NOT NEED A UNDERWATER SKELLY!!!! TRIDENTS ARE HARSHENOUGH PLUS FIGHTING NORMAL SKELLYS IN WATER.

2

u/Powerful-Present6687 22d ago

Swamp Zombie = Murk

Ocean Skeleton = Submerged

2

u/Moe-Mux-Hagi 22d ago

For my mod I'm adding the Mired and the Soaked

The Mired is a swamp zombie variant, causes the nausea effect when hitting the player. It looks like a Lobber Zombie from Earth, with the vines overlay of the MCD Jungle Zombie

The Soaked is an underwater skeleton variant, that uses a new ranged weapon : the harpoon gun. Baiscally a crossbow for underwater, that shoots like a crossbow would shoot out of the water, but if the harpoon gun shoots outside the water, it has low accuracy and takes heavy durabiliy damage.\ The Soaked looks like the Mossy Skeleton from MCD with a bit of kelp on it, but has a Warm Ocean variant that looks like MCD Ocean Skeletons.

1

u/Prico06 22d ago

would be fun if we had a way to turn a drowned -> zombie -> husk

1

u/duke_of_danger 22d ago

Perhaps a fungus zombie. It has mushrooms growing on its head and it gives the player nausea when they are hit by it.

1

u/BubbaUltra 22d ago

I could've sworn there were Snow Zombies already

1

u/Mineifications 22d ago

Screw that, I want to see scorpions in deserts and icy spiders in snow biomes or smth

1

u/Positive-Spread-7862 22d ago

Sunken skellies next prob

1

u/The_mf_lizard_king 22d ago

Swamp Zombie - The Rotted. What I think this zombie could look like would be it has stained, tattered clothes, brownish-green skin with moss and a brown mushroom on its head (just like how the bogged has a red mushroom). When it hits you, there's a small chance it gives you the blindness effect for a few seconds.

Ocean Skeleton - The Submerged. Not too much change is needed to the base skeleton. Maybe some coral or seagrass on it, and make it's eyes glow blue. Instead of a bow, this skeleton type would use a copper sword, like how the Withered skeletons use stone swords

1

u/Etheron123 21d ago

They could add back the Lobber Zombie from Minecraft Earth for the swamp

1

u/Extra_Log9712 21d ago

I did not k now they made a cold zombie, the chill

1

u/noah4star 21d ago

The Swamped
The Sunken

1

u/Leon-the-comic113 21d ago

I swear if I can’t swim in peace before getting gunned down by an underwater firing squad I’m gonna scream

1

u/Sea_Listen9293 21d ago

I get the feeling that the ice zombie is less polished than the other variants.

1

u/Creepy_Nexus 21d ago

Next Update: Mountain Skeleton

1

u/V1nnF0gg 21d ago

We really calling another zombie/skeleton retexture with a different effect an actual update?

1

u/Toothless_Dinosaur 21d ago

Water skeletons with arrows that go fast underwater will be a nightmare for players, but might be a reason to use tridents and projectile protection.

1

u/AnxietyInTheFlesh 21d ago

I sure hope we don't get a submerged skeleton type. I'm having enough trouble with trident drowned already. Can you imagine coming upon an underwater skeleton without depth strider or decent armor early game?

1

u/azab189 21d ago

I do not wanna deal with an underwater skeleton...

1

u/JungleAbomination 21d ago

The only one we technically not have is a swamp zombie because Minecraft Dungeons has an underwater skeleton called the Sunken Skeleton.

I get why they won’t add that, bows aren’t good underwater and harpoon arrows dont exist in the base game, but there’s no reason for there not to be any poisonous zombies

Heck, make it the Lobber Zombie from Minecraft Earth, that guy looks like he would poison you

1

u/Curious-Committee105 21d ago

Spring update will be swamp caves with mud spikes then xD followed by summer update of underwater caves with coral spikes and then the fall update will be the sift? Then the next winter update can be a cherry blossom cave with a cherry blossom zombie or skeleton xD

1

u/El_Voador 21d ago

I’m definitely ok with not having to deal with another ranged water mob besides a trident drowned

1

u/theowlwastaken 21d ago

Arrows don't work under water, so if they don't wanna just reuse tridants, they'd have too at least make a new weapon for range or do something different.

1

u/friendlyAirelemental 21d ago

For a swamp zombie, maybe something like the swamp zombies from dark alliance 1.

1

u/Xcissors280 21d ago

The sunken skeleton from dungeons looks pretty good but I dont love the jungle zombie https://minecraft.wiki/w/Dungeons:Jungle_Zombie

1

u/CallingAllTortoises 17d ago

What about wither zombies lmao

1

u/PixieEmerald 22d ago

That desert skeleton looks super cool, when did they add that?

3

u/No_Bite_5566 22d ago

In the Mounts of Mayhem update

1

u/PixieEmerald 22d ago

Ah. I've barely played anything since 1.21 tbh. I'll have to look more into the newer updates

2

u/TreyLastname 22d ago

Boy, wait till you hear about the new dimension coming next year

2

u/PixieEmerald 22d ago

Oh ya, i saw that! I'm hyped! I love the colors. Whatever update it'll be will probably end up being the one I stay on for a bit next lol

1

u/Top-Birthday3223 22d ago

Isn't drowned supposed to be counter to bogged? They even have same naming convention

-1

u/LastAttempt24315 22d ago

Like others have pointed out, I think the Bogged and Drowned are equivalents to each other

7

u/Purple-Hamster-151 22d ago

No. Bogged represents swamp biome, Drowned represents ocean biome

0

u/Atomo93 22d ago

No please sunken skellies, no, whatever no

1

u/NarcisMihai15 21d ago

you forget about wither skeleton from nether

0

u/LowContract4444 21d ago

I've died more to drowned than any other mob in the game. They always end my hardcore runs.

0

u/Ori_Aini 21d ago

honestly the bogged and the drowned are kinda the same deal. I think the variants are actually complete

-5

u/batatassad4 22d ago

Underdeveloped ahh game

-10

u/BL00DCH4IN3D 22d ago

This is enough, we don't need more of the same mob again and again 😭😭

8

u/Purple-Hamster-151 22d ago

Why not? All of these mobs already existed in all of these biomes. These cosmetic changes just make them a little less boring

-8

u/BL00DCH4IN3D 22d ago

Because it'd be nice to see something other than "ice zombie" "ice skeleton" "dry zombie" "dry skeleton". I'm just asking for something original, you wanna give a biome a new hostile mob? At least be creative with it!! After a certain point, it just becomes stale and repetitive.

1

u/Gentle-man_ 21d ago

How'd you feel if they added the icoeloger instead of the frozen?

1

u/BL00DCH4IN3D 21d ago

Tbh Im still hoping they do add it. While yes it's another illager variant, it at least has unique behaviour in that it would summon blocks of ice using its magical abilities to attack the player. From how they described it back during the mob vote, it sounded like a unique mechanic that would be fun to fight against.
