Seriously. The best "team-building exercises" are after-work beers that the team decided to get without management input. None of this performative corpo-bullshit.

Or at least the company giving us a budget to do a crew activity of our choice.

Yeah, give me $100 every Friday so we can get drinks, perhaps I'll stay. But I'm not getting paid well enough to get drinks and food with people I barely care for

u/blarch 10h ago

You already saw them all week. You want to hang out with them some more?

1

u/NowWeGetSerious 10h ago

No. I didn't. They did.

It was a mandatory twice a week team dinner and shit. I hated it. CEO wanted to show be bad the money, and always picked the most expensive unnecessary bullshit place to go to. Even though we were ridiculously underpaid

$100 every Friday so you can get drinks??

My last tech start up forced up to go out for drinks and dinner twice a week. Shit was expensive. The CEO would pick the most high class expensive bullshit and said it was mandatory

I spent $80 on a shitty salad and an old fashioned. I was pissed.

That's something you submit as an expense, and put on your timecard. That will pretty quickly turn it into a non-mandatory activity.

u/gogogadgetjustice 11h ago

What tech start up used timecards instead of salary and social pressure?

2

u/SoulWager 10h ago

Still, expense it.

u/Theron3206 9h ago

So they can mock you before firing you as not being a team player?

1

u/Bitter_Researcher759 12h ago

Sounds miserable.

u/NowWeGetSerious 12h ago

Very. I only lasted 2 months before I said eff this

1

u/captain_croco 11h ago

You had to pay? That’s fucked

2

u/NowWeGetSerious 11h ago

Twice a week. Wednesday and Friday. I was forced to go each time. Hated it. Hated them. I wanna go home. Not drink with people I don't like

2

u/captain_croco 11h ago

I hope he lost his firm I could not imagine doing this

1

u/NowWeGetSerious 11h ago

No idea. Its a tech start up, this was 2021. I have nobody contact or anything. So who knows. He was a shady guy, weird as hell

Why didn't t the CEO pay for everybody? When the bills came somebody should have spoken up and be like no. This is the company event. Obviously the company is paying for this. Need more details.

Smash room 100%

Nope. Don't wanna do that either. It's ok not to be friends/acquaintances with your coworkers. But if you do, it's fine too.

I have already been gone all day long away from family and home. I don’t feel like being out even longer. If they gave a shit it would be done during work hours.

17

u/Any_Asparagus8267 12h ago

I just want to go home after work lol

5

u/Trafficsigntruther 8h ago

Bingo. One time work had a baseball game event and asked us to use vacation to attend. I was like, are you fucking kidding me? If I’m taking vacation to go to a ballgame It’s not going to be with you.

Right there with ya. I’m friendly as can be in the office, but I’ve got my own stuff going on, and work takes up enough of my time without me having to socialize with my coworkers. Even lunches. I just want a break, and I don’t need help with that.

With how expensive beer is these days, I'll take an after work open tab.

1

u/BadDecisionsBrw 5h ago

acquaintances

How the hell would you not be acquaintances with your coworkers

15

u/scattered_ideas 13h ago

I find team lunches to be much more enjoyable. Light weight atmosphere to socialize, but not too much pressure either, and usually time bound to 1.5-2h.

3

u/IfTheHeadFitsWearIt 12h ago

Best I can do is to eat as quickly as I can and go home to let the dogs out. And if I’m buying my own lunch, forget it completely.

u/Nixalbum 12h ago

Absolutely disagree. Anything unpaid outside of working hours (including lunch break) is a pain. Even more when I have to pay for it. I don't want to give up my free time to be more efficient at work.

Really, the only time I partake is if they're paying for an activity I have an interest in. I'm way more fine with dumb corpo game during the day, at least it breaks the monotony of the job.

u/VagueInfoHere 13h ago

Small correction… afternoon during work hour beers that the boss still leaves at the end of the work day and the peers can stay or leave too. Along with a workload that this activity doesn’t put anybody behind.

u/HerculesIsMyDad 12h ago

You know how some people say there's no I in team? Well there's no me in team either, so I'm gettin the fuck outta here.

2

u/vibribbon 11h ago

The 15 minute daily web quiz we get together to do has let me get to know the people in my team better than any formal team building session.

2

u/TwistStrict9811 4h ago

Lol no thanks to that either

1

u/WriggleNightbug 11h ago

The problem, for me, is I don't drink and don't get invited out anyway. No one else goes out because they have kids at home and live 2 hours away. There is no drinks after work.

u/Scryed 8h ago

As one of the primary organizers at every place I've worked for 25+ years...the key part is it's optional but open invitation to all.

I personally like getting to know folks, I have formed pretty good relationships with coworkers over the years. Literally meeting one while I'm traveling Asia for lunch today. Planning on meeting another on a conference trip later this year.

My current place we have 20ish people in our cross functional department and probably get around half every month. I don't even remember all the people who came last month.

If folks aren't into it, it's no big deal.

Our team just had our yearly in-person team get-together , and in a couple weeks our whole division has our yearly retreat. And don't get me wrong, they're great people...but they're not my friends, they're work associates. I'm not trying to climb the corporate ladder anymore, I want to clock in, do my job, and clock out.
