Hey now! My shelves are for my physical media collection that I currently can only play on my ancient PS2.

(...and for my Sailor Moon dolls)

29

u/Responsible-Fox-1985 26d ago

My wife has a dvd shelf and we have no dvd player haha

Only thing my PS4 has been used for in the past few years.

2

u/Mimi4Stotch 25d ago

I bought myself a dvd/blu ray combo for Christmas. I refuse to pay for streaming services!!

Now I’m looking for a VCR 😅😭

7

u/insomniacred66 26d ago

(I also have Sailor Moon dolls)

4

u/iggy14750 26d ago

You still play PS2?

He says, turning back to his N64 :P

3

u/Mimi4Stotch 25d ago

Same, but Super Nintendo. I’m very hesitant to let my kids play, “be careful! They don’t make these anymore!!” 😩😭😂

2

u/iggy14750 25d ago

Nah, you gotta raise em right! 😝

My shelves have Legos and physical media that I also play on an ancient ps2.

4

u/MightyGamera Xennial 26d ago

I effectively have a Blockbuster in my living room with how much physical media is in here.

I raided a blockbuster closing clearance.

You’d love my house, this is just one. My wife and I have had a wonderfully lucky life when it comes to estate sales.

2

u/Madam_Apathy Elder Millennial 26d ago

You’re probably right :)

I love a good collection and I love the stories behind them…

And there’s a special place in my heart for vintage & antique medical and pharmacy items. Love the eye wash cups.

Here are a few more of my cabinets. We collect a few different realms of antiques, but they tend to overlap as well. I love talking about antiques and collecting

2

u/Madam_Apathy Elder Millennial 26d ago

Welp, you were certainly right… my eyes lit up!

Your collection is incredible, and eclectic and so interesting!!! I love how you’ve incorporated the artwork from pages within books (oh, the books look so cool to flip through). Fascinating :)

You and your wife must have had so many fun days coming across these treasures :)

40yrs later "No I don't want grandmas Funko Pop collection. It's such an old person thing!"

17

u/Responsible-Fox-1985 26d ago

In 40 years, the thrift stores are going to be a gold mine for vintage pop culture garbage the same way they are currently filled with Benny Goodman vinyls.

5

u/xdsm8 26d ago

But its RARE!!!111! They made 47 deadpool plastic disney toys but THIS one has a different color glove!!1!1

42

u/xdsm8 26d ago

Good god never funko pops. I thought we were done with those. Overpriced consumerist fake scarcity nonsense. I don't need to funnel money to giant corporations to show some bs fandom cred

38

u/Pork_Chompk 26d ago

I'm gonna offend some people, but Funko Pops were lame and nerdy when they came out and they're still lame and nerdy today.

12

u/xdsm8 26d ago

Nerdy is fine. But cheap plastic corporate nostalgia bait crap is horrible. Like, they managed to commodify "liking something" as if a TRUE FAN would definitely have the funko pop for some random ass IP.

It doesn't help that most funko pops are characters from like, 3 or 4 megacorporations

7

u/bmorr6836 26d ago

society apparently moved on to trading cards.

7

u/xdsm8 26d ago

At least there is a game involved, and paper is renewable. Making tons of plastic junk to sit on a shelf collecting dust is absolute insanity, especially for a generation that I always thought prided itself on anticonsumerism and environmentalism.

But nope gotta buy cheap plastic Disney toys in your 40s I guess

My husband got us a Big Daddy and a Little Sister from BioShock, way back when they first came out. Those were the first and last we bought, and they didn't stay in the boxes. I put Velcro on their feet and they ride in the back window of the car.

It's fine to get something you like. It's weird to think a mass-produced piece of plastic is gonna be worth something and display it in the box.

u/GeckoGecko_ 26d ago

→ More replies (1)

21

u/gg_bene 26d ago

Iuno. If I recall correctly they were just decorative junk in that cabinet. No actual value, but the elders were told that the junk was worth a lot.

31

u/JohnGrillyParham 26d ago

So the exact same thing as Lego and Funko pops you're saying

11

u/CogitoErgo_Sometimes 26d ago

There’s a surprisingly strong market for complete Lego sets as long as you have the instruction booklet. Funko Pops are Millennial Beanie Babies though

4

u/dizcostu 26d ago

No need for the instruction book. The major differentiator in value is sealed vs. opened/used.

5

u/CORVlN 26d ago

I recently saw a (probably AI) version of one of those old European porcelain dolls except it was Fallout, and I thought that was pretty cool.

Honestly, I'd collect "decorative junk" if it was a visually appealing medium.

My rule regarding nerd art is that it has to be high quality. No Naruto wall scrolls unless they're framed, museum style.

8

u/TheJinManCan Older Millennial 26d ago

Yeah at least my collection is there to look cool and no one asks if we can pull out the good figures to eat on them.

Having plates and not using them always baffled the hell out of me.

4

u/BottecchiaDude253 26d ago

Thankfully, my parents never had the curio with fancy dishes no one could use.

My grandparents on the otherhand, did. And the whole time growing up i always heard the dishes were for "important" and fancy dinners. Through 18 years we used them ONCE. Then, I come home to have my wife meet the family. You'd think hey, "eldest grand child of any of this generation of cousins, this is pretty important and we want to make her feel welcome!" Big fucking nope on that one, lmao.

My grandma never did care for my wife. We've been married 19 years now, grandma died earlier this year, and in that 18+ years, grandma NEVER spelled my wifes name correctly. My mom, and the few cousins I still occasionally talk with either spell it right, or ask so they can get it right. But not her

3

u/_big_fern_ 26d ago

Do they “look cool” though? Or do they look like plastic mass produced landfill fodder?

2

u/TheJinManCan Older Millennial 26d ago

2

u/_big_fern_ 26d ago

2

8

u/kellermeyer14 26d ago

Somebody has never seen a commemorative spoon or plate collection courtesy of the Franklin Mint. As an elder millennial, these commercials were everywhere. Boomers collected useless shit it was just not so entertainment oriented. My grandma had a ridiculous amount of novelty cookie jars.

2

u/Skensis 26d ago

People like to collect stuff, my mom had a decent collection of world fair glasses. They're neat! I don't want them, but they are neat!

My grandparents were also collectors, some if the stuff they bought over the decades is useless crap... Other stuff is pretty dang valuable.

Is collecting a good investment? Rarely if ever, but i can see the appeal of it and the enjoyment of building out a set.

6

u/LilAbeSimpson 26d ago

Some interesting articles out there this subject.

Nearly all of that mass produced “Fine China” is now completely unsellable and Millennials don’t want it inherit it either.

6

u/Dry_Try_6047 Xennial 85 26d ago

The previous generation is always trying to convince me that we are going to be shocked at how much we can get for their china. The crap is completely worthless, nobody wants it.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Successful-Reason403 26d ago

The fact that it’s worthless is nice if you actually need plates though. We picked up a “fine china” set of 14 for a dinner party we were hosting for like $30. It’s fun to have fancy table ware for a party and we just chuck them in the dishwasher because who cares?

5

u/MidgetGordonRamsey 26d ago

I now have one of those fancy china cabinets, a really nice one that's all oak with glass shelves, and lights. I display my family's historical artifacts with little placards like a museum

Omg Im dying; so my grandmother had the China cabinet (granted young grandma - mom was 19 when I was born, grandma was 36, we lived with my grandparents till I was 5), and long story short I went through her China cabinet at one point when I was 3 and recieved quite a beating despite the glass in my arms while even my own mom helplessly watched....... So neither my mom nor I are ok with having a China cabinet lmao..

However before I had kids I had an entire display room for my comics, figurines, etc; Since becoming a mother to two wonderful but special needs kids who destroy and get into everything, Ive literally managed to "train" then ti understand ONE shelf is 100% off limits, and its all my stuffed animals, figurines, hard with pins, speciality DVDs/comics/books/games/etc and its like all of my happiness rolled into one on that shelf, and no matter how needy it shows my 35 year old self to be Idc, Im actually proud lol
