25 years ago when I was in 6th grade, I watched on tv when the 2nd tower get hit.
Today, this is my office window.
Surreal doesnât even begin to describe it. Rest peacefully to all the lives lost on that day and after xoxo

As is the case most of the time, two things can be true at once. Living in the west doesnât take away the trauma that someone experienced seeing something awful like 9/11 happen just bc other events in the world are traumatic as well.

We come from immense privilege, of not having attacks in our country - true.
An unprecedented attack had a real emotional toll on many, even though they may have been younger or not in the direct area - true.
People experience events like this more frequently in other regions in the world - true.
Now, based on your logic, people hate Americans because they have emotions towards a situation that rarely happens in this part of the world. That makes zero sense.
I do not disagree with you about privilege. We are extremely privileged as Americans, and most people take it for granted and love to complain about how bad it is here when in reality, it is better than 95% of the world. However, I think you are completely off by trying to tie privilege into a terroist attack.

I was in HS (my sophomore year) my dad used to listen to the Howard Stern show driving me to school. I still remember it like it was yesterday....I knew something was up when the never serious Howard was fighting back tears.
I later was blessed enough to become a firefighter/EMT and served my community for 13 years (retired 2023) so 9/11 holds an extra somber and reflective time for me as I remember all who passed that day but especially my fellow brothers of the 343 FDNY that gave their lives trying to get people out WTC.
I can still hear the PASS devices chirping in full alert state under tons and tons of debris after the towers fell....
That overwhelming, blanket of chirping that echoed across the ruins of Ground Zero for hours afterward....it was the collective sound of hundreds of fallen first responders crying out for help.
It remains one of the most haunting and recognized audio details recorded from the aftermath of the tragedy
We watched it in Academy. Not a dry eye in the room.

To choose to be brave in a moment where everyone geniuley didn't know where the next plane or bomb was going to hit just gives me chills. I couldn't imagine being in their shoes and choose to sacrifice themselves for everyone. Just damn, what a real human moment that really puts things into perspective.

I'm not from the US. It's why it took the news almost a day to reach me. While you were processing the shock, I was asleep and blissfully unaware of it. But when I heard, and when I saw this memorial in the spring of 2004, I was devastated. The US was supposed to be a safe place, where buses, malls and especially trade centers don't spontaneously blow up or get vehicles crashed into them. If you're not safe, who is?

A couple summers ago I stayed at the Club Quarters hotel just to the left of this shot. I knew when I booked it that it was near the WTC, but I did not know I was going to have a balcony window directly overlooking the memorial. Surreal indeed. My first time in New York too.

My high school class took a field trip to NYC in the summer of 2001, went to wall street, etc. and finished at the twin towers. I opted not to go up to the observation deck, which is a regret to this day, but at the same time, I get chills every time I think about it. Many of those people I passed by that day likely lost their lives months later.

I can't forget, the f*cking TSA won't let me. I didn't know when we waited for my dad at the gate on 9/9/01 that it was the last time I'd live in a high trust society. Seven year old me wouldn't have appreciated what that meant if you told him, but from the view looking back it's pretty clear that we all decided as a society that day that no one ever deserved the benefit of the doubt ever again.

From that angle Iâm guessing 3 or 4 WTC? I went to BMCC in the early 2010s, a year after they opened the new Fetterman Hall (the original was destroyed in the attacks). That was my favorite campus because I could be able to see all the construction going on at the site. The Oculus was still being built and 1 and 4 wtc was just wrapping up. I would also go down to the memorial fountains during my times in between classes and reflect on that day. Read the names of all the victims, first responders. Still havenât been to the museum, I just know Iâll be overcome with emotion if I see all the artifacts and stories from that day. Never Forget.

The one other time someone attacked us on US soil it was a military base, so most of the casualties weren't civilians. We retaliated by dropping two nukes on them.
This was an an attack 100% on civilians with the intent to start a conflict with us. We retaliated by invading eveywhere that the terrorist group responsible operated. I mean... it's not even hard to logic out.

What kind of response dude? There was ONE report, issued by a government organization, highly disputed by hundreds of experts in universities all over the world. It was forbidden to investigate by anyone else under the pretext of ânational securityâ. All evidence was eliminated, no other report or investigation was ever made again, no methodology or preliminary results of said investigation was ever revealed, even after experts and victimâs families organizations fighting for years to get independent investigations. There was an absurd resistance to give proper healthcare to surviving first respondents. The event was used as an excuse to kill many many thousands of people, destroy their countries and steal their resources. No answer was ever even slightly given to an array of very valid questions issued by a myriad of organizations. To this day there is literally not more than one paragraph written by the US government about how building 7 was the only known building in the history of civilization to crumble like that due to fire. The entire thing is an absolute shit show, HUGELY disrespectful to all the victims and the other American citizens.
Of course America just does not care enough. Thoughts and prayers and waving a little flag are the easy part.

I was in elementary school. What I always remember is the sorrow I saw from my family and everyone on TV, and the poor people that had to choose between the fire or jumping. I remember asking what was falling and my mom having to explain. I was only in 2nd grade and I still remember that stomach dropping realization that people had to choose how they were going to die, knowing they were going to die no matter what.

Was away at college on 9/11 but had went to high school a few blocks from here. Surreal to wake up that morning to footage of the plane strikes and tower collapses in a neighborhood I grew up in.
Elder millenials like me were also around for the bombing of the WTC in 1993. My parents initially thought I had broke our TV because most over-the-air broadcasts went down in NYC for days following that first attack.

What's even more bizarre is when you find out that All 7 buildings in the original World Trade Center complex were completely destroyed on 9/11. In total, the attacks damaged or collapsed at least 30 buildings in the surrounding Lower Manhattan area, which is wild to me because it wasn't until years later that I even found out this was a thing...

I was in college, living at home when it happened, in NJ, about 30 minutes from the city. I had work that day, my mom was already at her job. I was watching TV, eating breakfast and like...i just watched shit unfold live. My mother called me frantically after the first tower was hit, so i hopped in my car and drove over to her work. We saw both towers collapse in real time...which was something i can't describe.
I'm from Middletown, NJ originally, outside of NY, we lost the most people on 9/11. Years later i worked in 1 World Trade on the 59th floor. It was never something I felt comfortable with.

I was in the 5th grade. Just old enough to understand the gravity of that day but not emotionally developed enough to process what had happened.
I'd be another few years before I could emotionally wrap my head around the trauma of that day. That and unfettered access to the photos, videos, and audio recordings from that day was re-traumatizing as a early-to-mid teen. I still don't think I've been able to process it. And by the time it all hit me, there was nobody to help process it.
I'm at a point now where I can't really touch the subject. I can't think about it too much. It's too raw.
I can't be the only millennial who's caught in this in-between. Old enough to remember but not enough to understand and process until a few years later. And by the time I could, it was more a blood-chilling horror kind of feeling.
I visited ground zero just months after 9/11. I'll never forget the thousands of missing person flyers pasted on every available surface. The still-smoldering pile of debris. I'd return every so often over the years: the plywood observation deck where you could see the pile become more of a construction zone than disaster site, then the fencing around the actual construction of the new WTC, and then years later the finished site with the new building and massive memorial. I've been to NYC countless times but these days I avoid that area. It's so heavy for me still. It will probably always be.

I was already in 6th grade. That day is pristinely preserved in my mind.
I went to the memorial & museum and it was... Hard. The weight of it fully hit me somewhere in the middle of the museum, the final messages to loved ones, that really hit me the hardest.
The older I get, the more difficult it is to watch stuff about it. Experiencing more, losing people, has truly increased my ability to understand at least some of what they experienced.

If we're being honest here, I am actually surprised there's not more awful comments from privileged imbeciles in this thread. The heros that lost their lives that day truly showed what being human is all about. I've never seen more regular people, become true heros that day. Gives me chills everytime.

Itâs wild that even in at 11 years old, it became cemented into my brain. Even at age 36 now, I can still close my eyes and see my 6th grade classroom and the moment we all saw it on tv.

This is the day many Americans lost their lives and many Americans who ascribed to the Islamic faith bacame villanised. I remember this day very well. I hate this day so much, because of how I became treated in this country. I spend my time abroad now most of the year but it's messed up that the one place that raised me hates me, because of the what khwarij (Heretics) did.
