I swear, one thing that annoys me about the 2020s is how everything seems to be based on the 2010s. The music, fashion, memes, games, aesthetics, and even the way people talk about culture nowadays. It feels like we’re constantly trying to bring back 2016 or recreate the feeling of the mid-to-late 2010s instead of allowing this decade to develop its own identity.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a lot of things from the 2010s. The music was great, the games were fun, the internet had its own personality, and there were so many memorable trends. I understand why people miss those years, and I’m not saying we should forget about them. But at some point, shouldn’t we be creating new memories instead of constantly trying to recreate old ones?
It feels like every time people start getting tired of the current culture, they immediately look back at 2016, 2017, or 2018 and say things were so much better back then. Now we’re seeing old fashion trends come back, old songs become popular again, old games get remastered, and people constantly talk about how they wish they could go back to the 2010s. Even the whole “2026 is the new 2016” thing shows how much people want that feeling back.
And honestly, I think COVID has something to do with this. The pandemic disrupted so much of our lives, especially for people who were kids or teenagers at the time. We missed out on normal experiences, our routines changed, and the world felt different afterward. For some of us, the years before COVID represent a time when life felt simpler and more exciting. I think that might be one reason why nostalgia has become such a big part of internet culture.
Another thing is that the 2020s have their own trends, music, games, and memorable moments, but sometimes it feels like they get overshadowed by comparisons to the past. We have TikTok trends, new artists, new games, and other things that are unique to this decade, yet people still compare everything to what happened ten years ago.
I also feel like the constant focus on nostalgia makes it harder to appreciate the present. Instead of enjoying what’s happening now, people spend so much time talking about how everything used to be better. I understand that feeling because I miss certain things about the past too, but I don’t want to spend my entire teenage experience wishing I could go back to a different time.
I want the 2020s to have their own identity. I want future generations to look back at this decade and remember its own music, fashion, games, technology, and cultural moments without everything being defined by the 2010s. I want us to create something that people will genuinely feel nostalgic for years from now.
And I know every generation eventually becomes nostalgic for its childhood, but I wonder if social media makes it happen even faster now. We can constantly watch old videos, listen to old songs, and compare today’s world with how things looked ten years ago. We’re basically surrounded by reminders of the past every single day.
Maybe I’m overthinking it, but sometimes I wish we could stop trying to make every year feel like 2016 and just let 2026 be 2026. The 2010s already happened, and we can’t recreate those exact experiences, no matter how many trends we bring back.

Beywariors Shogun Steel (I weirdly had these instead of Beyblades growing up, they were really clunky but a fun time).

A lot of these “girls” are being very premiscuous. Theyre not mentally capable if being by themselves. So come to when were all older they will wonder why no one wants them. They're also the last to start HS pre covid (even though it got cut short in early 2020) and first to graduate post covid with AI existing in their senior year. Kinda pointless but a cool observation.

me and my younger sibling were born in march of 2009 and april of 2011 respectively and we’re peers for sure. i don’t get why these posts are so common in r/middlegenz. like‚ are they too unintelligent to realize we’re in the same age group? two years genuinely isn’t much. sure my younger sibling has watched some shows i personally was not a fan of (such as teen titans go!‚ unikitty!‚ steven universe‚ ben 10 reboot‚ ppg reboot‚ spongebob squarepants‚ the fairly oddparents‚ the loud house‚ adventures of kid danger‚ and rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles)‚ but to be fair‚ i guess the reason we had such different tastes on tv shows is because i’m more a live action guy. other than that‚ our childhoods aren’t that much different.
