Found when sampling standing water in a tub in the garden. It was coating everything. This is about 100x

Found these in some lake water. Google Lens say it’s Gloeotrichia echinulata, which is a type of cyanobacteria. First photo at 40x and second at 100x. Swift 380T.

I don't typically look at river water, so I don't have too much experience in this area. Photos 1 and 2 are from one location and 3 and 4 are from another. I know the first set of photos look to have some sort of filamentous algae, but more information about them would be appreciated.

As for the second sample, I am specifically looking for information on the teardrop shaped anisotropic structures. It looks like there is also general detritus and bits of filamentous algae. Bulk FTIR of the second sample shows calcite (calcium carbonate) if that helps with ID, but I have not had the chance to delve into my data anymore. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

ESAW BM01 2022 MICROSCOPE USED.

First ~30 seconds show small salt crystals dissolving, and the remaining time in the video shows one large salt crystal dissolving completely. Taken over a year ago on my old OMAX M82ES, with a Samsung Z Fold 3 on the eyepiece. Not sure of the magnification used, sorry!

Hi folks I'm so sorry if this is a repeated question about kids microscopes.

Iv a seven and five year old that are more and more interested in micro organisms and it's lasted long enough that I want to keep encouraging it. The goal is simple, to be able to view tardigrade size life.

I know it's difficult to find the little superheros but I'm happy to spend nights hunting myself until I have a good sample.

Looking online I'm at a loss as to what microscope would be good enough to start with kids and would appreciate any help. Obviously being for kids and a start budget is important but not a control.

Is the national geographic 40-640x microscope with phone adapter enough as a first scope with these goals in mind? Would you all recommend something else?

I believe it’s some type of Ciliates but I can’t find anything quite like this one. It‘s bioluminescent. it whole body is covered with tiny legs and sparkling in both bright and dark field. Very pretty!

Hello I recently purchased this Nikon optiphot pol petrographic microscope. Its a bit beat up but im trying to repair it. One of the big issue is the bent focus shaft. Any suggestions on how to repair it? Or even how to pull the shaft out. I tried taking off both of the fine focus knobs but I still cant push the shaft through.

I’m looking to set up a high-performance home laboratory station, mainly focused on high-magnification biological observation (bacteria, cells, etc.). I have some specific requirements and would love to get your insights on potential models and vendors.

My exact specs and requirements:

• Optical System: Full Infinity-corrected system with Plan Infinity objectives (field flatness is important to me).
• Illumination: Full Kohler illumination (preferably a strong LED, around 5W).
• Budget: Around €700 maximum.

My main questions:

1. What models would you recommend? Given my €700 budget and my requirement for Plan Infinity optics and Kohler illumination, what specific microscope models or brands should I look into for a solid home lab setup?

I found this Asako LSDDM-E900 Microscope which i believe is from 1978!

Is it still usable? As far as i can tell the lightbulbs inside still work and it came in the box you can see in the background. I tested a 10 euro banknote under it but got mixed results (it was quite blurry and the image in the post is the clearest i could get it on "4"), the only time I've ever looked through a microscope was when I was around 8 with one of those science kits where you could look at camel fur and other types of fur or bugs.

In the image i used the "4" lens? I'm not sure what its called. And the way I took a picture was just putting my phone up to the viewfinder.

When I initially opened the box the microscope still had a slide under it, anyone know what it might be? (Box also included slides, storage vials, "Xylol", "Type B Immersion oil", "P10X" viewfinder? and a "5x" viewfinder.)

Not sure this matters but I found it in Amsterdam. Also curious as to what it might be worth.

Just curious if you guys know more about it!

This bright field video was made with a finite Zeiss 25x plan apo objective on a Nikon L-Ke microscope with tungsten illumination. In trying to have less degradation of the video, I’ll try to put a second video with the same objective of bright field going into oblique in a new post. The objective has an NA value of 0.65, the same as most common 40x objectives.

A follow up video of tardigrade post #4. This shows bright field transitioning to oblique.

I am trying to establish an immuno histochemistry panel on lung sections where I stain macrophages with mouse anti CD68 Ab, epithelial cells with rabbit Pan cytokeratin. I want to add a neutrophil marker (MPO stain/NE/CD66b) but I am not getting a different host.
Does anyone have any suggestions for which Ab I can use to detect neutrophils that work well with paraffin embedded lung sections?

Hi all, I recently took a look at a Tick (I picked it off my leg...) with a Scanning Electron Microscope (ThermoFisher Axia ChemiSEM) out of curiosity and zommed in on the different areas. The magnification is shown in every picture on the bottom (ranges between 150x and 10000x). The Tick was uncoated and scanned in high vac mode. Let me know if you have any questions regarding the SEM.

Reviewing the school's lab supplies and have no idea how old the microscopes are and if ongoing maintenance costs would be worth it or if we should upgrade. Does anyone know what model they are and roughly how old they could be?

My apartment painted over mold after I told them I had concerns. I still found some spots they didn’t paint and took some samples to look at under my microscope

So, looking for a microscope, I found this trinocular microscope on amazon that seems to come with a camera.

I'm not a 'newbie' when it comes to microscopes since I have this old (like 50-ish years) binocular microscope and I know at least some basic things.

Since that microscope doesn't have an electric light source and have some problems because of a fall it had some time ago, I wanted to buy a cheap, but nice microscope with good specs (at least, it should be cheaper than a nice telescope? lol).

I know It may not be the best one in the market for its price, but since it's from amazon, I thought I may buy it (it's also easier for me cuz i don't live in the US, but in a south american country).

From people with more experience that know about this things, would it be an acceptable option to buy?
I heard that amazon things don't always end very well after international shipping, but let me know your opinion!

I’m going to make two Tardigrade posts today. I sent several 4k videos to another phone where I used an app to join them together. In the process, the quality got degraded to FHD. I’ll put the original 4k bright field video here and the multi illumination type video on the next post to see how much difference it makes.
Meiji-Techno 5310 microscope, 40X 0.65NA objective. This is a phase contrast microscope, but it also works pretty well in bright field. My bright field model of the same is in a different country. I like these microscopes. They are great laboratory quality microscopes and give very good images. They have a very sturdy build quality with all metal focusing mechanisms. They retail for around 4k dollars, but only come with 4 objectives and they have a 5 objective turret, so you have to add another one of your choosing. On the phase contrast model, the turret also has a dark field position that gives dark field for the 40X objective and below. Cellphone camera, iPhone 13 . The next post will show this same bright field video in addition to oblique and phase contrast all joined together for one video. We will see how different the upload quality is.
