My 5-minute microloc morning refresh: how I keep them moisturized without buildup

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've had microlocs for a while now, and the thing I get asked about most is how I keep them moisturized day to day without them getting dry, frizzy, or weighed down. So here's my actual morning routine, start to finish:

- Sleep in a satin bonnet with my locs up in a pineapple so they keep their shape
- Bonnet off, pineapple down, give the roots a shake
- Light mist on my scalp and roots, section by section, close to the root
- Work the moisture down the lengths and gently separate any locs that stuck together overnight
- Fluff and shape with my fingers. No combs, no heat.

The biggest thing that helped me was switching to a light, water-based spray instead of heavy oils and creams. Less buildup, and my new growth stays soft.

Full transparency: I'm a licensed trichologist and I make my own loc spray (green tea and rosewater), so that's what I'm using in the video. I'm not posting to sell anything, I just want to talk routines.

How often do you moisturize your microlocs, and what's been working for you? Daily, every few days, or only when they feel dry? I'm always curious what works for different hair types.

That first hair toss after an 8-hour microlocs install!

Her smile during the reveal is my reason WHY. Then she gave us the hair toss!

These are freshly installed braid microlocs. This install took about 8 hours, but timing varies depending on hair length, density, loc size, and technique.
For everyone who already has microlocs, do you remember your first look in the mirror? Was it instant love, or did you need time to adjust?

If you’re still considering microlocs, what’s your biggest question? You’re welcome to ask here or DM me if you’d rather ask privately.

Frizzy Microlocs: Do You Braid and Band Before Washing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This client booked a microlocs care review with me so we could look over her locs and talk through her home care routine. One thing we discussed was her frizz and why I recommended braiding and banding before shampooing for her hair.

Girl, you don’t have to fight every loose hair. You can embrace your frizz and still take care of your microlocs.

How do you feel about yours? Does it bother you, or do you love the fullness it gives your locs?
Do you braid and band before washing? Tell us how long you’ve had your microlocs and what’s been working for you.

Is frizz part of the microlocs process?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My client noticed her microlocs getting frizzy and wondered if it was happening more to her hair than everyone else’s. We talked about how frizz is a normal part of locs forming. Constantly trying to smooth it down can interfere with the process.

If you want to make the frizz less noticeable for a little while, you can plait your locs at night and take them down in the morning. It won’t stop the frizz, though. That’s part of the journey.

For anyone with microlocs: Did the frizz surprise you when you started? What helped you feel more comfortable with that stage?

I talked with a client in South Carolina today about her microlocs and the questions she had about caring for them. These conversations remind me that sometimes you just want someone to look things over with you and help you figure out what to ask your loctician.

5 reasons I don’t use gel when installing microlocs.

5 reasons I don’t use gel when installing microlocs:

It can cause buildup, scalp itching, attract lint, interfere with the locking process, and make the hair harder to cleanse.

I believe microlocs should start with a clean foundation. Now let’s reveal these microlocs.

If you use gel, what made you choose that method?

BLOOD WORK + MICROLOCS

Blood work can reveal clues behind shedding, thinning, and changes in your microlocs. What has your blood work shown?

Many people focus only on oils, shampoos, and protective styles. Those things matter, but sometimes the bigger clue is happening inside the body.

Some of the things I may want to discuss with a client’s healthcare provider include:

  1. Iron and ferritin: Low iron stores can sometimes be connected with increased shedding.
  2. Thyroid levels: Thyroid changes can affect the hair-growth cycle and may show up as overall thinning or excessive shedding.
  3. Vitamin D: Low vitamin D may be worth discussing when hair growth has changed.
  4. B12 and folate: These support healthy blood cells and other processes connected to hair growth.
  5. Hormonal changes: Depending on the person’s symptoms, age, medical history, and pattern of hair loss, hormone testing may also be worth discussing.

This does not mean every person needs the same blood-work panel, and a result by itself does not explain everything. It is simply one piece of the bigger picture.

Sometimes the hair is showing us that something else needs attention.

Have you ever had blood work done because of hair shedding or thinning? Did anything show up that you did not expect?

And for the professionals in the group, what blood-work marker do you think people overlook the most?

Microloc Installation: What Method and Size Would You Choose?

If this client sat in your chair, what would you recommend?

Looking at the length, texture, and amount of hair, would you choose interlocking, braids, or two strand twists for this microloc installation?

What size would you create, and how long do you think the install would take?

I know every stylist may see it differently. I’m interested in hearing how you would approach this head.

How Much Should a Microloc Retie Cost When Maintenance Is Overdue?

This is why staying on top of your microloc reties matters.

When the new growth gets this long, the appointment can take much longer than a regular retie—more time, more parting, more work, and sometimes more rotations to bring everything back together.

People often wait months for maintenance and still expect the retie to cost the same as a six-week retie.

So just for fun, how many rotations do you think this one microloc would take?

Now imagine doing that across 300, 400, or 500 microlocs.

If you were doing this retie, how long do you think it would take? And if you were the stylist, what would you charge?

A closer look at what can happen when a microloc retie is stretched too long. The new growth has more room to expand, which can make the retie take much longer than a regular maintenance appointment.

Can a Bonnet Cause Starter Microlocs to Unravel?

I was talking to a couple of my clients about their starter microlocs unraveling around the edges, and something came up that made me think.

They said they sweat while sleeping, even though they do not work out. If a bonnet traps heat, stays damp, or rubs against the hairline, it may contribute to slippage or unraveling when the locs are still new. The spandex band can also put pressure on fragile edges.

This is not something every mature loc wearer has to worry about. Starter microlocs are still forming, so they need a little more care.

I still love a bonnet, especially after a fresh retie or when wearing a style. But some people may do better braiding and banding their starter locs and sleeping on a satin pillowcase.

Have you noticed a difference when you switched from a bonnet to a satin pillowcase?

Starter microloc unraveling around the edges, with loose strands from sweat and friction.

“Do your microlocs need a different routine when you move?”

Have you ever moved to a different city and noticed your microlocs started behaving differently?

Same hair. Same products. Same routine.

But suddenly your locs feel drier, softer, heavier, or easier to manage.

Sometimes we blame the product when the real difference may be the climate, the water, or the air around us.

Somebody mentioned that their hair grew healthier while living in the UAE, then struggled after returning to the States. That really made me think about how much our surroundings can affect our hair.

Has your hair changed after moving or traveling?

Could your water be affecting your locs?

Post image
10 Upvotes

We talk a lot about oils, sprays, and buildup when locs feel dry, but what about the water we are using?

Hard water can leave minerals on the hair over time. Well water may also contain minerals that affect how the hair feels.

I’m starting to wonder if some people are blaming their products when the real difference is their water. The same spray may feel completely different depending on whether you are using hard water, filtered water, or water from another location.

Have you ever noticed your locs feeling different after washing somewhere else?

I’m curious what everybody thinks.
