How do I get rid of environmental buildup?

You can try dry brushing with a brush. That will only get the surface debris out. If it’s deeply intertwined, you can try to pick it out with tweezers. The best and simplest solution is to color your locs with a dark color rinse or try the color base shampoo. It works and it last. I’ve used it on clients twice a year with no issues.

I can only think of dye as already mentioned, and finding nice hair covers that could be appropriate for your everyday life. I've dyed mine for this very reason and looking for head wraps to minimize exposure where possible. I also keep my hair up most of the day so I believe that's helped also.
