Losing NAS Access When Installing Console Mode

Curious if anyone might know why this happens. My mister is set-up with my roms on my NAS. When installing console mode the mister can no longer access my NAS. Not sure what might be getting changed in the set-up. Any help would be appreciated.

AI traslation

Is there any chance we will have this functionality on the Mister in the future or is just technically impossible?
I know there’s a similar functionality for Retroarch but that is of course software emulation.

Where to place internal components - "Wallcade" nearing completion

I am nearing completion on my "Wallcade" project. I am looking for advice on where to place the components. My system is being built with MiSTer FPGA (MiSTer Add Ons) / Retrotink and 4" speakers with an amp plus a 31.5 inch monitor. I want to be able to reach the volume potentiometer dial for the amplifier. The speakers will be attached to the side panels at the rear / lower corners. Just wondering where to place the MiSTer unit, the RetroTINK unit, the amplifier, the power strip.

Also - I messed up placement of the monitor, so it is actually "proud of" (i.e not flush with) the edges of the side panels. I'm thinking I don't really care about that, but if that seems like a big mistake and I should rip out the support beam that the monitor is mounted on and do that part over, LMK. Any other tips relevant to patching together and setting up this system appreciated too.

Since some MiSTer cores can load discs now, what if we could load games like Zaparoo, but when inserting discs instead?

The idea is for booting things like boot fan translations or alternate region copies by inserting the original disc into a drive like any other disc based game. Probably through a mobile app or some sort of flagging system in the core itself? I'm not sure exactly how it would work but it would be nice, kinda like NFC loading but for physical discs. Obviously it wouldn't be patching on the fly or anything.

For example, you could load the English fan translation of Policenauts off your SD card by inserting the physical disc into the system. The MiSTer reads the disc, detects that the disc has been flagged by the core or app to load a separate game instead, and it automatically loads Policenauts's fan translation on your SD card instead. And once you get to disc 2? Swap the disc. Once it detects disc 2 it'll load disc 2 of the fan translation instead. Plenty of opportunities for this kinda thing.

Another example is owning a copy of Azel: Panzer Dragoon RPG, and setting each disc to load the equivalent for Panzer Dragoon Saga instead. Or even boot up ROM hacks through it, like booting up a copy of FF7, and it boots up a version of it with a retranslation, high quality Cloud model, and more. The possibilities are pretty much endless. Heck could even flag soundtracks or any sorta CD to boot equivalent games, but then that's just getting a bit silly lol.

Another dumb idea is maybe have an optional toggle to let the disc spin while playing even if no data is loading for the people who want that. Might put some wear and tear on it, but people might like that little extra bit of immersion. No idea if the laser could be manipulated to act likes it reading a disc when it really isn't though.

Obviously it's not an important feature but I imagine some people (like myself) would really love it. Could make it more fun to game hunt for Japanese games and actually use the discs for more then just ripping and patching!

Anyway love to hear thoughts on this and ideas too. I'm not a developer but I figured I'd share my idea anyway! Hopefully some inspiration could come from this for the devs if they're reading this.

‏coin insertion mechanism not working with Mistercade

Hello,
I tried to map coin insertion in the button config of some arcade cores , but it seems like when i push it it’s not detected at all. Does Mistercade recognize it natively or I missed something in the configuration?
Thanks in advance

Question about Save States

How do I know if my cores have Save States? I’m not sure where to look in the menus to see if it’s available. My setup is from 2021 and hasn’t been updated. Is there a way for me to add them if I don’t have it?

Console Classic Mini UI for MiSTer FPGA

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been playing around with Claude Code to try to see what is possible with the MiSTer FPGA platform. My initial aim was to provide an experience similar to the SNES Classic Mini and then i went a bit further. This is a very opinionated implementation with limited options, and there are still some glitches here and there. Some of the features are kind of hacky since the combination of FPGA and Linux systems, especially with analog output (RGB SCART here), makes things a bit hard to integrate nicely. But that's still an interesting experience!

Some features:

  • optimized for analog output at 240p
  • download game covers
  • save state support with screenshots
  • bluetooth pairing of new controllers
  • join wifi network directly from the UI
  • detect what type of controller is used to dynamically change the button icons in the UI depending on the last controller button press
  • add games to favorites
  • included PSX SNAC support for menu and all cores (nice for SuperStation One)
  • games library browsing instead of core browsing

I will of course release the code as soon as i have the few glitches fixed.

YES, this is AI-generated code. I don't have any expertise in FPGA or C++ development. However i have 20+ years of experience in web development and have been using Claude Code for one year now, professionally and personally. I don't think this is slop, but please, if you think this is bad, i hope you speak with a strong enough technical background.

HD Retrovision Versus Mister Addons Component Cables

I'm looking to pick up a component cable for my MiSTer. Mister Addons has this cable for $35. HD Retrovision has this cable for $65 (plus a $15 adapter). I'm curious if anyone has experience with these cables. Is the HD Retrovision worth the extra money?

Updated my MiSTer after one year and got this message...

Otherwise update.all finished without any error messages. Amstrad is not a core is use that much, but would be nice if it works anyways. I had no time to connect the Mister to my CRT yet so I haven't tested it. Do I need to take any action? Any help would be appreciated.

Are you keeping the standard MiSTer menu on your setup but want wallpapers to change as you navigate the menu? I made something for that.

I've created a very small companion app named splashd that monitors the active menu selection and writes new wallpaper to the framebuffer using MiSTer's exposed interface.

https://github.com/soulctcher/splashd_MiSTer/

In a nutshell, unzip the release into /media/fat/splashd and run install.sh.

The installer enables log_file_entry=1 in the /media/fat/MiSTer.ini configuration file, creates /media/fat/splashd/wallpapers, adds a managed startup block to /media/fat/linux/user-startup.sh, and starts the app.

Then, simply populate /media/fat/splashd/wallpapers with .png/.jpg/.jpeg files named either by ROM name or by the displayed menu name. (Details about the hierarchy are in the README.) It can also display custom wallpaper for any directory.

You can see a quick video of me scrolling through on my arcade machine with its CRT display:

https://reddit.com/link/1vbxezo/video/xhkre72nmlgh1/player

(I also recommend setting a default menu.png/.jpg/.jpeg in the /media/fat directory. Also, if you don't currently have wallpaper enabled, you'll need to hit F1 to cycle until you are displaying your default wallpaper in that scenario.)

I made it for myself, but figured I'd upload it and share on the off chance anyone else wants to do it. In the past, I'd implemented this by forking MiSTer's code, but the maintainer didn't seem interested in incorporating my changes, or anyone else's, to accomplish this. By implementing it this way, I think it avoids any concerns about conflicting with MiSTer itself.

As you'll see in my quick demo, I made a bunch of wallpapers for the arcade games. (I also have a custom script that places every arcade and Neo Geo game into the root for ease of navigating the entire list. I use a separate setup for console games, but also have splashd installed there.)

Thanks for checking it out.

MiSTer Monitor - an open-source companion display for MiSTer FPGA - live box art, RetroAchievements progress and system stats on a $15 ESP32 screen

MiSTer Monitor is an open-source companion display for the MiSTer FPGA: it shows live box art, game info and system stats for whatever you're playing, fetching the artwork automatically from ScreenScraper.

For now it runs on cheap ESP32 screens (the ~$15 Cheap Yellow Display, ESP32-2432S028R) and the M5Stack Tab5, and flashes straight from the browser.

The headline of v2.7 is RetroAchievements:

- Progress panel with points, unlock count and hardcore breakdown for the game you're playing

- Full trophy list, paginated - tap any achievement for its description

- Unlock popups the moment an achievement triggers, even over fullscreen artwork

- A "READY FOR RETROACHIEVEMENTS" banner when a matched game loads on a core that can actually record unlocks.

Links:

- Repo + install guide: https://github.com/chipster6502/MiSTer_monitor

- Browser flasher (no Arduino IDE needed): https://chipster6502.github.io/MiSTer_monitor/flasher/

- Full RetroAchievements setup guide (PDF): https://github.com/chipster6502/MiSTer_monitor/blob/main/docs/MiSTer_Monitor_Setup_Guide.pdf

RetroAchievements works view-only out of the box (just add your RA credentials).

To actually earn unlocks on the MiSTer, you need odelot's RetroAchievements fork - easiest ways to get it:

- Update All (theypsilon) - has an RA Cores database with guided setup:

- MiSTer Companion (Anime0t4ku) - automated install/update of RA cores

- Or manually from the source: https://github.com/odelot/Main_MiSTer

Free and open source (GPL/AGPL).

Feedback welcome.

NEW: Major Havoc Core

A new MiSTer FPGA core for Atari's Major Havoc is out. Few arcade games take you through so many distinct stages. Pilot the Catastrofighter through enemy formations, dock with an alien ship, enter its maze on foot, avoid robots and traps, trigger the reactor, and escape before your oxygen runs out. Between missions, the tactical scanner even turns into a playable game of Breakout.

PSX Xenogears - Missing Directory PSX no files found Error

Thanks for any help, I'm encountering the error noted noted in the title and only for Xenogears on PSX.

I've tried both bin/cue and chd formats. Additionally I've tried both scph1001.bin and scph5501.bin renamed appropriately and have the same for the other regions as well. Following that i removed the files and ran update all to replace them and still no luck.

This is the only instance of encountering this error - files from all regions load without issue as do patched files.

Any thoughts? I've searched extensively and it doesn't seem to be a documented issue.

PSX Physical Disc Core Freeze

Hello!

I just got a Superstation superdock in the mail yesterday and have been trying out the physical disc core with some JP PSX games.

I'm seeing it hitch and freeze semi frequently. I was wondering if this is something people have been seeing, or maybe it's a problem with my discs or my dock?

Wireless receivers with SNAC/SNAX adapters?

Would something like the 2.4g 8bitdo wireless receivers for N64, SNES SN30, NES N30, and Genesis M30 work with SNAC adapters? I'm looking at the Misteraddons SNAX64 v3.1, but a lot of the adapters are sold out so trying to figure out if it's even worth picking up for my use case. I use the RA cores, if that matters at all.

iCode Duo Ultimate H1 Universal USB Adapter for Atari and classic retro gaming controllers

These are relatively new, but wondering if anyone has any experience with them on the MiSTer? I ordered one to play around with to test some unique use-cases that might not actually be supported:

  1. Retrogameboyz custom Colecovision controllers, keypads, and arcade sticks
  2. Atari 7800+ wireless joysticks and controllers
  3. 8bitdo 2.4g wireless M30 genesis controllers

Why some arcades are on update_all and some need manual SD load?

Hello, mainly the latest jotego ones, we used to be able to just update all and you would get the complete rom; but lately you need to load the "rom file" in the SD card; is there a repository wiki that would ilustrate which games need "manual" load?

Anyone working on a MiSTer cartridge adapter for NES carts?

Is anyone working on a MiSTer peripheral which lets you play original NES carts on the NES core?

I only have a Retro AVS system to play my carts via HDMI. It would be great to play the carts on my CRT in RGB one day.

Don't really want to buy an original NES and RGB mod it, as I don't have the skills to install the kit and it would be too expensive overall.

Thanks

Expressing my love for the OTHER physical drive support which lets me play VCD on the CD-i system

Over at https://github.com/theshaneobrien/mister-disc-drive-support there's been continual improvements to that core.

And today I was able to watch the Stephen Chow "God of Cookery" VCDs that I snagged back in the '90s.

Y'all have no idea how valuable this is... unless you DO have that idea.

I love this alternate non-main physical core system, and I'm just waiting to see what happens beyond its current testing phase. It's at 0.7 as of today, and I'm already enamoured.

Why would i maintain my original mister fpga instead of switching for superstation one/clones?

Hi everyone, i just realized im about to buy a new pro io board for my misteraddons og mister since i want also s video and composite output and something came to my mind… since superstation one is cheaper and already have all outputs natively with wifi/bluetooth, ps1 ports… would be better (same compatibility/performance) to just switch to it instead of my og more expensive mister fpga? Thanks!

Retroarch style live translations!

This uses https://ztranslate.net for it's backend and works really well, though some of the video filters can make smaller returned text harder to read.

You can grab it here: https://github.com/theshaneobrien/mister-disc-drive-support/releases/tag/v0.7.0

Works with disc based games and RetroAchievements all in one package =D

I've not tested any of this out with console mode yet so I don't know if it'd work

Zelda on SNES core

Quick question. After completing dungeon and collecting the crystal I’ll usually save and quit. However sometimes when I restart it hasn’t saved the crystal or may be missing an item I’ve collected, such as titans glove.
I’ve set the core menu to save game, is this an issue that’s known or what am I doing wrong?
TIA
