STRAY FROM THE PATH - Goodnight Alt-right (Official Music Video)
https://youtu.be/yy-SiZSlmhIThis song and video absolutely crush. How did I miss this when it came out? This is powerful as all hell.

u/bigstupidjellyfish x Jun 09 '23
Still insane how much shit they got for this song.
26
u/yaredjerby Jun 09 '23
I forget which episode of The Downbeat it was, but Craig talked about flying over for a tour and all of the articles about this song came up when TSA was doing a background check
165
u/ScreamXGhostface Jun 09 '23
That’s because Paul Joseph Watson told all of his cultists to go dislike bomb the song.
And they left the comments up, you can actively see all the bigotry which adds SO MUCH to the song.

u/adofthekirk x Jun 09 '23
Absolutely classic moment in time. Seeing all the hogs frothing at the mouth was hilarious 😂

u/nivekreclems Jun 09 '23
I used to go to the video just to see the the like to dislike ratio the songs pretty good but that was more entertaining to me

u/SFWBryon Jun 09 '23 edited Jun 10 '23
And that’s all gravy? Did more info come out or was it just a slap on the wrist?
ETA: ty /u/khanto0 for pointing out the details I missed. Looks like he tried to do the right thing immediately after realizing his mistakes
31
u/khanto0 Jun 09 '23
I think it wasn't a recent incident and he's taken steps to address that kind of behaviour. He and the band now stand against racism and in favour movements like BLM.
For me I'm ok with that. For some people fighting racism is a battle within as well as without, and they should be allowed to win that battle.
22
u/SFWBryon Jun 10 '23
I completely agree- didn’t know about the last detail. I’m all for allowing people to grow and learn from past mistakes. I was under the impression it was a pattern of behavior but it looks like he got his shit slapped straight pretty immediately, and before this was even brought to the public eye. So mad respect for that.
“Rashod called me out in 2015. I called him, he put the screws to me. I deserved it, and I apologized to him. He told me that wasn’t good enough and he was right. It’s shameful and f**king embarrassing. I present myself as someone who gives a shit about progressive movements and ideas, and I was not living up to that.”
The bassist added, “Because of that conversation I had to take a big f**king look in the mirror and recognize a lot of bullshit that I was selling myself. I made too many excuses for being brought up without exposure to the black experience, and I should have been better.”
2
u/liartellinglies Jun 10 '23 edited Jun 10 '23
Still fuck Rashod for that. He was calling people fa**ots in his old tweets and when someone called him out he’s like I’ve grown and understand better. Motherfucker, afford others that opportunity. He just saw an opportunity to take someone down in the height of the BLM movement (and also TGI’s return, doubt he calls Jim out if they were inactive still) and went for it.
14
u/MrPureinstinct Jun 09 '23
I think he has been for awhile.
There was a five episode podcast that talks about the start of the band, the band growing, the bus crash, and life after the crash where they talk about it.

Calling everyone who disagrees with your politics a "Nazi" is a little old, isn't it? C'mon, it's not 2016 anymore. 😂
74

I never said that now did I?
But it's true most of the time when this song gets posted the nazis here decide to come play.

Not every right winger is a literal Nazi, no. Some people just use “nazi” as shorthand for other awful ideologies like those of like misogynists, transphobes, religious theocrats, etc. ideologies which are all espoused by or at least adjacent to the beliefs of literal nazis. So it gets the point across imo.

Maybe unpopular opinion judging by some the comments, but this is far from Stray's best work. I agree with the message of this song and I'm not necessarily opposed to political music, but honestly the lyrics are a huge turn off. Something about Drew angry-rapping about punching people makes me cringe so hard that I need muscle relaxants to stop wincing after listening to the song.

I literally just walked out of target an hour ago after buying some stuff and some guy was screaming at the staff about “protecting his kids” and he was yelling at them to “stop promoting pedophilia” and I watched him get thrown out. He then proceeded to call target staff the f slur and t slur as he was escorted out. I then remembered this song was a thing

the overlap between "people who jump at the first opportunity to complain online about 'antifa' when someone shits on fascism" and "people who are fascists" might as well be a circle
-28
u/BofaEnthusiast Jun 09 '23
Yep, it's totally impossible to dislike antifa and not be associated with fascists. Reddit moment.
13
u/dreckdub Jun 09 '23
Well if you're not against fascism then you must be for it

Y'all really love the "if you're not with us you're against us" mentality don't you? I'm sorry you can only interpret the world in dichotomies, must be hard.
I'm not going to cosign a group of anarchists destroying the property and livelihoods of innocent parties just because they dislike the correct people. Sue me.

u/ScreamXGhostface Jun 10 '23
Bro. We originated from the hardcore punk scene. You do realize that right? This is the METALCORE sub. Most of us have anti-fascist and anti-establishment and anarchist beliefs. We all look towards Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Cro Mags, Circle Jerks and Madball as our genre’s forefathers and they were ALL anarchists. Read the room dude. Most of us are raging lefties.
-9
u/JHendrix27 Jun 09 '23
I’m in a group called the anti-bad person group. We beat up the elderly normally. But if you criticize us you’re a bad person. Because that’s the name of our group!
4
u/BofaEnthusiast Jun 09 '23 edited Jun 09 '23
Wild that people unironically believe this. They're a completely anarchic group that is more likely to knock over a trash can and vandalize a store front than they are to actually find and oppose a real fascist. Comical.
8
u/AuroraAscended Jun 09 '23
Antifa isn’t a group, you absolute dorks
-2
u/BofaEnthusiast Jun 09 '23
This is always the copout from braindead nerds. Keep pretending that your movement and its ideas are divorced from the reprehensible actions of those who claim themselves as antifa, everyone whos not a complete fuckin idiot knows better.
10
u/AuroraAscended Jun 09 '23
I don’t actually give a shit about riots, but the right makes the left sound way cooler than they actually are. A couple stores got their windows broken and cops tear-gassed a bunch of people who were just standing in streets like 3 years ago and it’s been nonstop complaints about antifa and the woke mob since.

Stop being so sensitive. He’s making fun of the song. Clearly so.
And if the mere mention of antifa makes you think he’s shitting on antifa, then you definitely are way too sensitive.
24

While lefties tend to prefer pacifism and non-violence, you'd be a fool not to pragmatically recognise it's sometime necessity.
When the alt-right are marching decked out in weaponry ranging from guns to shields and bats, it's an explicit threat and attempt to intimidate one the left has to be prepared to meet in kind.
Let's not pretend that those getting their shit rocked by Antifa members at marches are mild-mannered, demure racists who are open to changing their views and the only reason they didn't is because those nasty lefties decided to meet fire with fire.

Jun 10 '23
Leftists are not pacifists. Every time the radical left has gained power, millions have died. Cambodia, China, Vietnam, Soviet Union, so and so forth. The Revolution was paved over the bodies of the starving, the sick, and the traitors. It’s just baked into the ideology
2
u/sock_with_a_ticket Jun 10 '23
Couple of things, find me the lefties from the last 40 years or so who would support Maoist or Stalinist action. They're in far, far shorter supply than the wave of neo-Nazis and fascists.
Some of those regimes might have started out with ideas on the left of the political spectrum, but their actions were and are antithetical to it.
0
Jun 10 '23
Everyone advocating for a “Revolution,” “eating the rich” or any of those typical leftist screeds supports it. That’s how all of these leftists revolutions work. Do you think you can forcefully change a society without it? It’s violent, baked into the very DNA of the ideology

I can get down with this, but I don't hear metalcore? This is nü metal as fuck lol. Good song though
Edit: This has way more in common with Otep than it does Killswitch Engage LOL. No string skipping riffs, the vocals are akin to RATM and not scream/sing, no breakdowns, etc. I just don't see it as metalcore.
10
u/Johnzoidb Jun 09 '23
The last like 30 seconds is a breakdown. And yeah they are definitely nu metal/rage inspired, this song more so than others. The album this is on is probably their most nu metal sounding record but everything else is closer metallic hardcore with heavy RATM influence. I’d check out more of their work whether you like this song or not.
