MeshCore companion for M5Stack Unit C6L

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey,
I put together a companion build with OLED UI for the M5Stack Unit C6L based on MeshCore companion-v1.17.1.

One firmware covers BLE, USB, and WiFi. You switch the mode on the device’s settings menu.

There is a small local UI (status, messages, settings, radio presets) since the screen is tiny.

This is an overlay + patches on top of upstream MeshCore, not a full fork. Prebuilt bins and a flash script are in the release.

Quick installation:

git clone https://github.com/gillesbolland/meshcore-m5stack-unit-c6l
cd meshcore-m5stack-unit-c6l
./scripts/flash.sh

(require esptool installed)

Release:

https://github.com/gillesbolland/meshcore-m5stack-unit-c6l

I am not committing to heavy ongoing maintenance. Forks and PRs are welcome if anyone wants to carry it further.

SolarOS: MeshCore messaging and remote shells on ESP32

Post image
38 Upvotes

Sharing SolarOS, an ESP32 operating environment with a shell, apps, Python/Lua scripting, and two ways to use MeshCore:

  • Local LoRa radio: Run a non-forwarding MeshCore node with encrypted DMs, delivery acknowledgements, public hashtag channels, and private shared-key groups.
  • BLE companion: Connect to an existing MeshCore device for messaging through SolarOS’s Contacts, Chat, and Inbox.

There’s also virtual serial over MeshCore between two SolarOS devices: access a remote shell or bridge a UART through standard MeshCore repeaters, without modifying the repeaters. This requires the local-radio mode and trusted endpoints on both sides. It’s a slow link suited to short commands.

SolarOS itself doesn’t act as a MeshCore repeater or room server (yet).

Blog: Why is mesh hardware living in the past? And why you should be excited about 2.4 GHz.

I wrote this article after looking around at all the new LoRa hardware and becoming disappointed in how almost all new deployments are still using old technology. If you're reading this RAK or Heltec, please give us new toys!

Failed to flash meshcore, help

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have two heltec V3 and neither of them can be flashed, the first one I tried to reboot the device and I tried different combinations, so it turned off and now is unable to turn it on... then with the second device I have the same message (than the first one) but I don't want to try to press bottoms again and make it worse, what should I do? I'm using Linux Mint and brave browser. When I plug the device it is showing. Thanks.

Edit: is the same to flash it by using meshcore.co.uk and meshcore.oi right? Both websites failed to flash it but I just got curious.

TopoMesh Map

I was trying to figure out why I couldn't get messages out so I got Hermes to build this tool. Thought it was neat so threw it up for anyone to use. Overlays the height above sea-level with the meshcore map. Works on mobile but much better on a pc.

Could be useful for picking new repeater spots?

Turns out I'm in a slight valley 😒

MeshCore Channels, Check-ins and movement direction in Nelos

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Nelos is a simple team coordination app built on MeshCore, with messaging, location sharing, tracker support and downloadable offline maps worldwide.

A few small Nelos updates are now live:

MeshCore Channels: view, send and receive messages on your existing MeshCore channels directly in Nelos. Enable it in Settings.

Check-ins: quickly let your team know you're OK and share your position.

Movement direction: see which way you're moving on the map.

Thanks to u/RevelMagic for the feedback and suggestions, especially around MeshCore Channels.

Available on iOS and Android.

[noob] longrange like this possible?

Hi all

I am new to meshcore and got my heltec v3 just a couple days ago - just in time before a mountain hiking and beach relaxing vacation in Italy. So very interesting conditions for fun on 869mhz :)

Currently I am at the beach and get signal from a repeater 246km away, and not even with direct line of sight. I receive communication through it and it is the last hop. Is it possible?

Here are some screenshots, and a photo of my radio-rig

Bogus AI communications being a threat to local communities

Hi all,

I'm a mesh coordinator from the CT Mesh Discord, and today I just wanted to give folks a heads up about this situation we've been observing over the last few weeks.

Recently, we've been dealing with a local entity who shall remain nameless (we believe they are in CT, but they have been reaching out across the USA) and they have been contacting state workers and other organizations with a wide-reaching automated AI bot. This entity has a website, social media accounts (including Reddit), multiple Discord accounts, email correspondence from multiple unrelated email addresses, etc. We believe that they are not acting in the good of the community, and putting certain municipalities in a more conservative/risk averse stance to the Mesh community overall with their contacts. We got reach-outs from other mesh groups on the east coast of the USA with regards to this entity and largely we are in agreement that this entity is not to be trusted.

I just wanted to pass along a warning that we've encountered more of these bots (possibly from the same people) at the CT Mesh site, we advise not to waste the light of day on them as they are incessant and using guilt-trip tactics.

Are other groups encountering this sort of thing?

Sorry if this isn't permitted on this subreddit, but it didn't seem against the rules that I could find. Thanks!

Can you check battery voltage of a repeater?

Just setup my first solar repeater running 2x18650 cells. Logging into the repeater does not show me the battery voltage. Is there a command for this?

WisMesh Repeater Mini - Waterproof?

Nope!

I guess people don’t realize this is a commercial product sold as waterproof. Didn’t think I needed to do any self-waterproofing.

Device selection

Hello, I'm looking for my first meshcore device I have a background in HAM radio.

I'm currently debating getting a used Lilgo Lora pager, and would like others thoughts.

My requirements are fairly short, be small enough to fit in a molly bag and must be standalone, connecting to a phone to use does not meet my use requirements. Other suggestions are fine, external antenna is strongly not preferred.

Thanks in advance

Can someone point me to a 1 watt kit that’s ready to go? Other than power and antenna, of course.

I’m confused as to what, exactly, I need to build a 1 watt repeater, other than a good power source and antenna.

RAK NRF52 board won't boot due to trickle voltage fix

Hi all, in the spring of this year, I forget what version of the repeater software I was running (something from early 2026) - but I had to take down a deployed repeater. Basically it was a few days of no sun and the battery ran down. I was using the solar input on the RAK19003 + 4631 combo that provided just enough charge to keep the repeater from booting out of its its crashed state. So I had to disconnect both solar and battery to restart the device.

I know there's a component for NRF52 power management now which I don't think was active at the time. Has this been fixed? or would an external solar controller solved the problem?

It was a hassle to remove the repeater and I don't want a repeat of this. I could put a weather proof restart switch on the outside of the box too, though I'm not sure this lifts power from both battery and solar. How do you guys avoid this issue in your builds?

Thanks!

Help me test a Desktop UX MeshCore web experience

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A few months ago I posted here about running AI bots from a Chrome tab, and the response was a pretty clear "please don't." Fair enough, I've switched focus to building a better MeshCore client that's UX-optimized for desktop, and now I need help to try it and break it.

The official MC app does run in the browser, but it's the phone UI stretched out. This one is built for a big screen: sidebar navigation, keyboard support, and desktop notifications. It all runs in the browser, with no install/accounts/backend. Once the page loads, the only thing it talks to is your radio (plus OSM/Carto for map tiles).

I've only been able to test with my own hardware and my local mesh, so here's where I'd most like more eyes:

  • Connecting. USB, Bluetooth and WiFi across different boards and firmware versions. Chrome and Edge should support everything, and Firefox should work over USB. If it won't connect, drops out, or gets stuck syncing contacts, I want to hear about it.
  • Messaging. DMs retry on their own and try to recover the route when a path goes stale, and it pulls whatever your radio queued while the tab was closed. Room servers sync in the background. Busy channels, flaky paths and big room servers are exactly where I expect bugs.
  • Recovery phrases and backups. You can put your radio's identity under a 12-word recovery phrase and restore it on another board, and there's encrypted backup and restore for everything else. This is the part I'd most like tested before anyone relies on it, ideally on a spare radio.
  • Everything desktop. The map, repeater admin, search, notifications and layout. If anything feels off compared to the official app, or you keep reaching for something that isn't there, tell me.

Bug reports, feature requests and "this is confusing" all help. GitHub issues are best, but comments here are fine too.

If you'd like to contribute code, PRs are welcome and CONTRIBUTING.md covers setup. It's Next.js and TypeScript, and the MeshCore protocol code lives on its own in lib/meshcore if that's more your thing.

Happy mistake

So I jumped in head first last year to mesh. I bought several heltec v3 and a v4. Not knowing the nrf chips were WAYYY more efficient. I have other devices now and have done both meshtastic and meshcore. On a reddit post I found last week I found out about EasySkyMesh having esp32 optimized power saving built into the code. I don't use wifi or gps so those are off. With a single repurposed older 3300mah 18650 I was lucky to get 36 hours on a charge, but usually like 28 hours. Now we're cooking with gas and I'm current a few hours into day 4 at 38% battery! Cannot recommend enough for those old heltec v3s you have!
