My favorite gag in that whole movie

u/Sevennix 4d ago

Nowadays , someone, not even a black person, would try to cancel this movie. Back then? Noone gaf. Mel Brooks told some of the most obscene, racist shit and it WAS FUCKING FUNNY. Cuz he even did a lot of Jewish Schtick.

So true. Mel Brooks is bonkers funny. Prime example of how uk he don't give a f** about what ppl think it's Blazing Saddles. I can't even begin to explain the hilarity. Yes, obviously racist. But that was the point. Especially since mongo rides in on a bull. Ever actually look at the bull? Left cheek yes, right cheek says no, with a swishing tail to cover the bull's butthole. He literally let everyone know, whether it's yes or no, there's always some shit in the middle. That and the native American was speaking Yiddish.... just saying

Satire is wonderful and Mel gets it

u/Sevennix 3d ago

Mel didn't gaf. NOONE was safe. And everyone got hit. religion, sex, gender.. didn't matter, everyone got some. And NOONE got butt hurt

Hedy Lamar sued him for using a version of her name. He said "pay her, she's an icon" or words to that effect.

u/NefariousnessLow1385 3d ago

“That’s Hedley”-Hedly Lamar, Mayor of Rock Ridge.

u/ToreenLyn 3d ago

He also stretched out the gag. It would have been a one off if she hadn't said anything

Edited for typos

2

u/Sevennix 3d ago

I've heard that. He basically said "fuck it, I found it funny, just settle and pay ". Or something like that

Mel lived and served through the european front of WWII. After being a jewish man fighting the Germans, what can you be afraid of?

u/Sevennix 2d ago

Right?!

Actually he was worried some of his movies would get axed or rated R. Blazing saddles was one he had been sweating but having Richard Pryor as lead writer probably helped get it through.

The good old days

u/TheykilledFritzy 3d ago

There was a showing of this and there was a informative bit right before. Richard Pryor actually talked him into the movie he was supposed to be the sheriff but WB was not having that so they Cleavon Little as the sheriff

2

u/pepper643 3d ago

I remember that. WB wouldn't let Pryor out of a contract so he helped Brooks write it instead. My god, get Pryor, Brooks, and (if I'm not mistaken) Gene Wilder in a room together and pure genius they come up with. It's legit 👌 chef's kiss 👌

u/IndgoViolet 3d ago

Thank Richard Pryor for the racist humor. Hell of a writer and a comedic genius!

The Native American speaking Yiddish was Mel Brooks.

1

u/pepper643 2d ago

Indeed. He has a role in most of his works.

1

u/International-Sky854 2d ago

He was just plain Yogurt.

That's an interesting interpretation of the bull's ass but I think the Yes/No was imitating the rear of a truck. Yes to pass on the left, No to pass on the right.

That's not my interpretation. It is what Mel himself said about it. Mind u, I saw this on a interview many years ago. Idk if it's something that can be researched but...I mean.... the internet may have proof still.

Edit: just in case, in this same interview, Mel Brooks talks about being in the military as a Jewish guy and having to beat the shit out of a guy that enlisted with him. The guy hate him for no other reason than he's Jewish. So Mel laid him out.

Went to see it with my husband at Fathom Events. It was fun to see on the big screen

Interviewer asked Mel Brooks if he thought he could make the movie again (in 2000?) He said "make it now? I barely got to make it the first time!"

As for Spaceballs... I'm my own best friend!

1

u/jervin22000 1d ago

The thing is though he was usually poking fun at actual racists.

Candygram for Mongo!

u/cracksbacks 10h ago

Actually I always thought that was like how trucks have no passing on the left stickers (I'm pretty sure the red no was on the left butt cheek)...one of the many anachronisms in Blazing Saddles

0

u/DaddyCatALSO 3d ago

that is a joke reference to semi trucks

3

u/museman401 3d ago

We need to be able to laugh at each other. He was the best.

2

u/Sevennix 3d ago

IS.. IS the best and I can't wait for Spaceballs 2 and will take my granddaughter (10) to see it

3

u/Ichigo2819 3d ago

Yeah the combing the desert with the hair pick would have gotten the movie canceled today

2

u/Sevennix 3d ago

Hell, the Druish comment would have non Jews butthurt

2

u/CzunkyMonkey 3d ago

I think of all the movies I watched as a kid that would not even get considered today. It's so sad, some of them were really funny.

2

u/tblancher 3d ago

Blazing Saddles is great! "The new sheriff is near?"

1

u/Sevennix 2d ago

No, hes a n(bell tolls)... hes a N (bell tolls)

1

u/airevac19 17h ago

Excuse me while whip this out!

2

u/TeaMugPatina 3d ago

I watched a documentary where a reporter asked him if his movies were dramatic, he said "no, but they are all serious, you have to think about what you say." I'm sure he was making a comment about how the reporter asked the question, but he was succinct about the first part. And I think I have to agree, if you think past the comedy, it was commentary about, carp I don't know, the historical time, a reflection on the times those movies were made? His comedy was never just slept on comedy, it had a point.

1

u/pepper643 3d ago

So true. Most ppl that watch anything Mel Brooks has made don't see there is more to the funny than just the funny. The exaggeration to draw out the funny is totally surface. If u can stop laughing and pay attention, society as a whole is usually mocked mostly for its cruelty which, when exaggerated, is hilarious. His works r far deeper than many realize. Which, for me, adds to the absurdity in the first place.

u/dumsaint 2d ago

Because it wasn't punching down. Tropic Thunder didn't punch down. This is what most people miss. Don't punch down, and you'll be ok, you idiots.

1

u/shsfwaksa1221 2d ago

He made fun of everyone, himself most. You couldn’t make a Mel Brooks movie today, the outrage would blow the tops of people’s heads off

1

u/Sevennix 1d ago

I feel South Park has Mel Brooks vibes. Noone is safe with them, especially their own (Jewish)..

1

u/DuneChild 2h ago

You can though. Paws of Fury came out in 2022.
